Vehicle Detail
1997 SVT Cobra Convertible - 5.0L Stroker & IRS Up for sale is my 1997 Triple Black SVT Cobra Convertible that I have owned for 5 years. I bought it as a Christmas present to myself when it had 50,099 miles on it. Since then I turned the car into a much more powerful and better handling car while keeping the modifications tasteful and OE appearing. Engine- 5.0L DOHC Stroker with only 1500miles since built The fully forged 5.0L DOHC motor was built using a ‘04 Mach 1 Aluminum 4.6L Block with a Kellogg Forged 8 bolt stroker crank. It has custom Manley forged pistons with file fit rings and rods are Manley H beam rods with APR bolts. The cylinder heads are ’01 Cobra “C” heads that were pocket ported, had the valves redone and new springs installed. The cams are the more aggressive 97 Cobra cams that were properly degreed in. New timing chains and tensioners were installed. The intake is ’04 mach lower with a new takeoff 01 cobra upper. It has a BBK cast aluminum cold air intake. The engine has 42lb Green Top Ford injectors and a new 255Lph Walbro pump in-tank. The car has Mac long tube headers, Mac H pipe with catalytic converters and is a Magnaflow full stainless cat back but with SS Mac mufflers instead. With the cats and Mac mufflers the car has a nice idle and no drone at cruise but at WOT the exhaust really wakes up and sounds killer. Polyurethane mounts support the engine. AIR injection and EGR has been deleted. The car has just recently passed Connecticut Emissions with flying colors. It comes with an SCT tuner. Transmission- ‘04 Tremec TR3650 rebuilt with only 1500 miles since built The tranny started as a 40k mile ’04 GT tranny (after the TSB redesign) that was fully rebuilt with new syncros, brass fork pads and a “gorilla” fork to replace the bent stock one. The TR3650 was made available in '01 and has a higher torque rating than the smaller outgoing T-45.The shifter is a Steeda Tri-Ax. It has a Dallas Speedcal to interface with the 97 speedo. It has a 03/04 Terminator Cobra spec clutch upgrade and an FMS aluminum driveshaft. The tranny shifts like new. Rear end- 99 Cobra Independent Rear Suspension The stock solid axle was swapped in favor of a built IRS out of a 99 Cobra. It is a night and day difference on the road. It has 3.73 gears inside. It has a Steeda rear brace and front support added too. The suspension was fully rebuilt with all of the mounting bushings and all of the control arm bushings replaced with Polyurethane. The rear springs are Eibach pro-kit springs and tokico blue shocks. Front suspension/chassis The Cobra features a Maximum Motorsports front K member and control arms. It has coilover front shocks and Max Motorsports caster/camber plates. There is a Steeda front sway bar and bumpsteer kit installed. A custom fabricated Convertible X brace mounts to the body and to the bottom of the K member in place of the stock support bar to increase rigidity. The steering rack is a new takeoff piece bought from Panoz. The car has Steeda full length subframe connectors welded in. Body & Interior The car wears all original body panels with typical paint blemishes for a driven 58k mile car. No peeling or oxidized paint or body damage more than a minor ding. All the Ford body panel vin stickers are present. The car was driven on nice days only and lived in a garage when not driven. No rain, put away for the season before the first snow. The car has a CDC lightbar and nice OEM tonneau cover. The top does not leak but has some worn edges from use. It should be replaced as its condition does not match the rest of the car but I rarely drove the car with the top up so replacing it to be perfect was not a priority. The interior is in nice shape with stock leather in great condition given the mileage. It has an ‘04 Cobra center console swap. There are Autometer Electric Phantom oil and fuel pressure gauges added along with an Innovate wideband air/fuel gauge hooked to an LC-1 wide band driver. There is a Pioneer CD player that replaced the stock head unit otherwise the stereo system is standard Mach specs. Wheels and tires are FR500 in anthracite and are deep-dish in the rear. Michelin Pilot tires are in good condition. As you can see I am familiar with every nut and bolt in this car. I have a thick folder full of all receipts, manuals and other important paperwork that I kept from every significant purchase for this car. Essentially the entire drivetrain and suspension has been replaced and upgraded. My goal was to improve upon a stock Cobra using upgraded Ford parts and the right choice of aftermarket parts. It is essentially a highly modified 01 Cobra wrapped in a low mileage ‘97 Cobra body. There is a huge collection of additional aftermarket parts made to make this car handle great and a pleasure to drive. Everything works on it, keyless entry, top, air conditioning. It is not temperamental at all, sounds great and pulls & handles far better than it did stock. I never had a chance to dyno the car but I expect it would make 380HP with the conservative tune and due to the 5.0L stroke and later model heads far more torque down low than the original 4.6L. I am selling only because I am getting the itch to do something different. I feel the price is very fair given what has been done to it. I am open to vintage/modern musclecar trades of equal or lesser value +cash. Please contact me with any addition questions or requests for specific photos. A $200 nonrefundable deposit is due within 48 hours of sale and the balance via bank check or wire transfer within 1 week. Title and vehicle transfer following cleared payment. I have no issue working with a transport company to have the car moved.
