Vehicle Detail

This is a very early 1979 Honda CBX that was purchased in September of 1978. The original owner rode the bike until 8 years ago when he decided the CBX was too heavy for him to safely ride any longer. It then sat in his garage until I recently purchased it. Other than washing off a coating of dust, I haven't done anything mechanically with the bike. I purchased a battery to check the bike out electrically. Everything works. By that, I mean all lights, the horn and the electric starter. After checking the compression, which checked out +/- 5 % for all 6 cylinders, I squirted a mix of gas and quick start into the carbs. The bike fired up intantly, but ran rough, as would be expected. When I bought the bike, the intake box between the air filter and the carbs had been removed but came with the bike. The daughter of the owner, whom I dealt with in getting the bike, didn't know why this had been removed or much of anything else about the bike. I would presume from this that at some time after the bike had been parked, the owner, or someone else was checking or tuning the carbs and hadn't completed the job. So here is the story on the CBX: I don't know much about them or have an interest in owning or riding a vintage Honda of this size or complexity. I'm interested in smaller bikes and based on the daughter's description when I answered the local ad, I thought I was going to see a totally different model Honda. Although not what I expected, I do know that this is a desireable model for collectors and based on it's originality, condition, and one owner history, I decided to buy it anyway. Cosmetically, as can be seen from the pictures, the bike is in very good condition. As for flaws, which are very minor, on the cowl behind the seat, there is about a 1/2 section of one of the gold penstripes that is missing. There is a tiny wear spot near the front of the fuel tank on the right side that doesn't show in pictures. The rear of the front fender has a wear spot, but is in a location that is hard to see. The seat has no tears or splits. The fuel tank only has very minor surface corrosion. The front brake drags for a while after being applied so it maybe just needs to be used some for the pistons to side more freely. So, what we have here is either a cool looking example of Honda displaying their engineering prowess that a buyer would display as eye candy or a bike that probably needs carburetor attention and definitely needs new tires to be a sport touring rider. I'd be interested in learning from a CBX enthusiast how low this vin # is, as it supposedly was the first bike sold in Alabama. I have an open title and bill of sale signed by the original owner. I also have the original owners manual that appeared to have never been removed from the storage pocket before my purchase. In addition to the intake box that was removed from the bike, I have a rebuild kit for the 6 carbs. I can deliver the bike up to 500 miles from my Atlanta area home for .75/mile. I will also work with any shipper the buyer desires. Please call Brian at 678-570-3986 with any questions.
