Vehicle Detail

Work done on the car in the last two years After having modern electronics in my other vehicles I really had a hard time going back in time to a FM radio and a CD player. This was an iterative process. I began by just replacing the radio with a Kenwood DNX6980 head unit. I used the custom install kit from Eurospeed found on Ebay. A great kit because it looks oem. After putting the head unit in I found that the factory speakers sounded like crap. When I pulled them I saw why. Apparently the factory used marginal speakers to start with. Coupled with the 10 year old paper cones it was pretty easy to see they need replacing. Having been through this with my Tundra I did not waste time and went straight to the top drawer and bought the Polk MM series component speakers for the doors as well as the dash. Once installed it sounded fantastic. All the way until you reached around 70 miles per hour with the top down. You could almost hear it ok but it wasn't clear. Hence the factory amp replacement. I ordered a Kenwood amp but when I went to put it in I found that it was too wide and wouldn't fit in the same place as the factory amp. I thought about installing it on the floor but I wanted a super clean install. So I sent the Kenwood amp back and read some reviews on the new Precision Power P900.4 Phantom Class D amp and decided to give it try. It fits perfectly and it lived up the reviews. Fantastic amp. No problem hearing it now. With the DNX6980 I also added Rear View camera, Navigation, and XMSirius, Bluetooth, and Ipod connectivity. As I love to tinker with electronics all connections are soldered and shrink wrapped so as to not cause a problem later on. I did the job myself so I know I dont have to worry about how a professional installer can do it so much faster than I can. Not to brag but I think I would put this sound system up against any other Boxster. You need a radar detector if you are going to drive this car. I have been a big fan of the Passport 8500 series forever. I have owned at least 4 of them myself. But a windshield mounted radar detector is not a good option on a car where you might leave the top open for just a second while you are away. It is guaranteed to be gone when you get back. I did my research and bought it's cousin. The Beltronix RX45 Professional Series Radar Detector. The antenna/sensor is mounted in the front right grill opening, the control panel is stealthily mounted to the right of the steering column and below the dash so as to not be noticeable from outside the vehicle. The single Green/Red warning led is mounted on the dash in your eye line next to the hazard light switch. This type of radar installation while expensive offers you the best in protection from thieves who will slash your top to steal a windshield mounted detector. Ask me how I know. The rear plastic window was scratched and yellowed to the point of being hard to see through so I put a new top on it. I also replaced the vanity mirrors on the visors at the same time. For some reason the mirror covers are prone to be missing. I also removed the ash tray and installed the delete kit which give you a little change tub. I also removed the CD storage module with a cubby hole for your garage remote etc.. I began getting a slight grind when shifting the transmission into 2nd gear. So I took the car to a local full service Porsche specialty shop named "European Auto Techniks" http://www.pcarshops.com/texas/european-auto-techniks. The owner Michael Cawley started off by checking the shift cable and the viscosity of the oil. That did not fix the problem so we agreed to pull the transmission, and disassemble it. Once apart he had me come over where he had the whole thing laid out like a surgeon. I was impressed with his facility and his attention to detail. He explained to me that what had apparently happened was that the 2nd gear syncro had broken into two pieces to cause the problem. He showed me that the corners of a few of the second gear teeth had rough edges. He assembled a thorough estimate itemizing all parts that he thought should be replaced to bring this transmission up to a like new state. To include all seals, wear parts and the 2nd gear set. After my approval he ordered the new Porsche oem parts. I have the itemized receipt showing all of the parts and the work done. While we had the transmission out I had him install a new rear main seal, a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and a pilot bearing for good measure. I noticed one of the boots for the one of the CV joints boots was showing deterioration so we took care of those as well. This all happened in the 1st quarter of 2012, So I have driven this car for over 12 months since and I can tell you that Michael has done a fantastic job with this repair because the transmission has not had any problems since and shifts as smooth as butter. While apart we also installed the LN Engineering, IMS bearing retrofit kit to alleviate that possible problem. If you are not aware of this problem you should Google it. I still have the OEM 18" stock wheels, but I installed the Ruger R10's that you see in the pictures. Now I am in a quandary. You see I loved this car so much that I went out and bought a brand new 2013 Boxster S. I contacted the fellow I bought the Rugers from and he told me they will fit my new cars as well. My plan is that if I cant get the value of these wheels out of the deal then I will be letting the auction end as normal but then I will swap out the wheels and relist the car for a lesser amount. I recently had the brake pads replaced with premium pads and all rotors refaced. Stops on a dime. I priced out what I spent on the upgrades. $490 Radar Detector $1426 Stereo upgrades $2100 wheels. The three upgrades total to at least $4016. I think it's only fair to add at least half the cost of these to my reserve price. I got to use them for the last two years so I got some of the value of them, so I'll split the cost with you. The convertible top, clutch, transmission rebuild, brakes etc.. I consider these as maintenance items, so I wouldn't think that I should add them to the value of the car although you should consider them when you evaluate my car against the others. When was the clutch replaced, and what about that IMS bearing, hmmm? Can I afford a $16,000 rebuild if it let's go? You know with mine. I have all of the documentation to back up my claim. The optional backstory, Since I was a kid in high school I have always wanted to own a Porsche. My wife and I had been avid boaters since our late 20's. But the last few years of owning a boat it had gotten harder and harder to get my wife to go out on the boat. After much thought and many arguments I came to the conclusion our boating days were over so I sold the boat. I had the money sitting in the bank account for months not bothering anybody. Just waiting until I could decide what to do with this play money. One fateful day my wife started making noise of paying off bills etc with it. Of course I did what any red-blooded American male would do under my circumstance I immediately started shopping for a new toy. Luckily I beat her to it. I purchased this car from a medical student in New Braunsfels 2 years ago. I can honestly tell you this is the most enjoyable car I have ever owned. I took it on as a project to update it to put it in tip top shape. Of course after I get the car in tip top shape, I didn't have anything to focus my spare time on. One Saturday, I was at my golf club when I saw a brand new 2013 white Boxster S in the parking lot. I could not stop thinking about it. So I started shopping. Two weeks ago I bought a new one. So that is why I am selling this one. A fool for a pretty face. This car is for sale locally as well as being listed elsewhere so the auction may be terminated due to an earlier sale.
