The auction for Old Thirsty: This was supposed to be sold a month or so ago, but after almost 45 days of empty promises and no checks, shes back up for sale. It is with great sadness that this well apportioned beast is put up for auction, but better to be used than to sit. This is "old Thirsty", the first National Bureau of Mines truck. The Truck was purchased 3 years ago as an all purpose, full utility abandoned mine exploration vehicle. It needed to be able to get most anywhere, carry most everything and get it all there and back in one piece. And it needed to look good, and official. As it was the first truck for the National Bureau of Mines. Reserve is set at a very fair $4000.00. It will not be sold for any less than this. Period. History: She started out as a utility truck used by a local neon sign company. When we purchased her she ran rough, but looked like exactly what we wanted. We took her home and started to overhaul. The first item to be addressed was the suspension. It was sloppy, wandering and the ride was rough to say the least. Weighing in at just over 5000lbs, it was obviously not beefed up to handle the box or any weight that might go in it. The list to be replaced was as follows: New front shocksSteering Stabilizer added. All bushings and bearings replaced.Replaced worn leaf springs and retainers At this point, we came upon a problem. The front locking hubs, were not. Locking that is. They turned but didnt engage anything. The front end needed to be torn down and the problem assessed. Turned out the hubs were shot from a lack of lubrication and no use. We replaced the entire hub assemblies, since that was already out we opted to rebuild the front differential. Not cheap, but since we were already into it... The front end was solid now, it turned easily, tracked well and was stable at speeds up to 90mph. However, that rear end felt somehow neglected, and started whining. The rear of the truck was still squatting and a little squirrely. Back to the shop. Rebuild rear differential, replace bearings, machine all internals, replace axles. It still was squatting as well...so how do we remedy that? Rear self leveling air suspension bags and remote compressor. The last bit to top off smoothing out the ride was tires, 35 inch tires on 16s are a lot to push, gas milage really suffers. We upgraded the wheels to 18 inch rock crushers and put some nice ATRs on it. Ride is smooth and like it should be now. As Murphy would have it, we started noticing a skip, or loss of power at lower RPMs. A quick review from a 460 engine specialist determined that we had some lobes in the cam that were flattened. We started with a bottom end rebuild that soon turned to a top end and full rebuild with a bit larger cam. At this point we had the carb rebuilt and jetted and added a hi output HEI. New in cab gauges to keep an accurate eye on everything. She was still starving for fuel. A check showed that the in-tank pumps weren't really doing their job. Remove and replace, still a bit weak for what she could drink, so we added a manual inline pump with in cab, on/off switch. Now that the suspension and motor was solid, well, that should tax the cooling system, right? Re-cored the radiator, replaced all the hoses, thermostat, clamps. Now if you have ever been out in the middle of nowhere, you know how vital lighting and power is. Thus began the lighting job. We mounted two hi-output hella driving lights to the push-bar. Not bad for driving, but still, blasting across the desert, you can always use more. We added 4 Pro-Comp, 55W off road driving lights to the top of the rack. Two floods on the outside, and two pencil beams on the inside to stretch late night visibility. So its great now at night, as long as you are in front of the truck...How to fix that? 7 Hella (55w) work lights mounted on the rest of the truck. 2 on each side, three in the rear. All manually operated from a switch panel inside the cargo box. Well, now that draw from the lights had me worried. It takes a hell of a battery to fire up that big 460 and the fresh rebuild wasnt going to make turning that crank any easier. So we mounted up an isolator in the front cab. Then we put a deep cycle marine battery in one of the cargo compartments, this is now the electrical box. It contains a battery, fuse box for all of the lights, air compressor and LEDs. It works flawlessly and you can now run all of the rear lights without fear of killing your starting battery. All fluids are synthetics, 5-30 full synthetic engine oil. Gear, diffs and brake fluid all full synthetics, no leaks. Total work, documented with receipts is just over 21k. Something about a fool and his money comes to mind. :) As it is, a sponsorship contract wont allow for this truck in the fleet, so she has to go. And here she is. Im not stupid enough to think Im going to get my money back out of her. But Im hoping someone will take her over that will utilize and enjoy the work put into her. However, Everything said and done, truck runs like a champ. Its tight, super torque-y. Fun to drive, damn near unstoppable in 4 high, plows through everything else in 4 Low. Her downfall is she is thirsty. Driving around town, not putting your foot in it. 11-12 mpg is average. Open the carb up and she will drop to 6-8mpg. Freeway, she will cruise at 90, solid and stable. She will also drink fuel in at about 5-7 mpg. On the upside, she has two fuel tanks. She is clean, fun and reliable. No worries taking it for groceries or across the country.
