The coming of age motion picture was directed by George Lucas, and featured a cast of rising stars, including Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfus, Cindy Williams, and Paul Le Mat. It was a basic study in the cruising and rock and roll cultures of the post- World War Two Baby Boomer generation. Produced on a shoe string $775,000 budget, American Graffiti became one of the most profitable movies of all time, grossing over $200 million. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Movie goers were drawn by the intertwined story lines of the main characters, who were struggling with the reality of approaching adulthood in the sixties. The real stars for many in the audience, however, were the cars. Topping the list was John Milner's Ford five window coupe. Either hanging out at Mel's Drive In or cruising the boulevard, Milner was always ready to defend his reputation as king of the streets, on Paradise Road. The early '30's Ford five window coupes have become some of the most popular models in the street rod circles. Since American Graffiti, they have become the most recognizable hot rod in the world today. The most coveted of these are the original steel bodied examples. This offering is an original, all steel bodied, rotisserie restored 1930 model. The vehicle was completely disassembled, and rebuilt, every nut and bolt, from the ground up. Hundreds of hours were spent on massaging the body, resulting in laser straight steel. Stripped to bare metal, refinished in Canary Yellow. It wouldn't be a street rod without a chopped top, and this top is chopped four inches. The steel fenders are also bobbed four inches in the rear. Exterior finish is of the highest quality, and has been buffed to a mirror gloss. All new glass. Chromed radiator shroud. Single rear view mirror hung from the upper door frame. Crank out front windshield. Launcher Rocket ten spoke chrome wheels, 15"x4" on the front. Injector Rocket five spoke chrome wheels, 15"x8" on the rear. Radial tires on all four corners, with oversize D.O.T. tires on the rear. Open engine bay. Standard trunk, with fuel tank and battery located inside. Fit, finish, and gapping is excellent. Ford script embossed in the metal on both sides of the lower cowl. Factory headlamps with turn signals mounted on top. Front and rear bumpers have been removed. Complete inner cab has been redone, employing some special modifications. New stuffed leather seat and door panels. Black and white, with Ford V8 logo on seat back. Period correct, and very comfortable. The original interior for the American Graffiti coupe was also white and black, but George Lucas ordered it be died black for the movie. Three spoke custom steering wheel. Billet steering column with turn signals. A 1940 Ford dash has been custom fit into the cab. TPI-Tech vintage style speedometer and odometer. TPI-Tech vintage style fuel, water temperature, volts, and oil pressure gauges. Lokar billet shifter. Power windows. AM/FM/CD radio and switch panel has been custom fit in the overhead panel. As stated previously, crank out windshield. The outer glove box has been signed by Milner himself, Paul Le Mat. Chip Foose signed the inner glove box. The heart of this street rod is the engine and drive train. The first area to examine is the firewall. It has been flipped around and custom fitted. The builder made a unique choice for his powerplant. Most of the street rods rely on either small block Ford or Chevy. This engine bay features a 425 Cu. In. Buick Nailhead engine. The engine received this nickname from the valve configuration in the heads. The Nailhead was campaigned perhaps most famously by “TV” Tommy Ivo, who raced a twin-Nailhead (placed side-by-side) dragster as well as a radical four-engine, four-wheel drive dragster named “The Showboat". The Nailhead had a big-bore, short-stroke design that offered tremendous torque, spread out over a wide RPM range. With its small valves and tight intake and exhaust ports, Buick used a very interesting camshaft, with higher lift and longer duration. The engine in this rod is an original Super Wildcat 465, which was carbureted by dual Carter AFB four barrels. These engines are powerful, rated at 360 HP, but their strong suit is the tremendous amount of torque. The dual quads have been replaced with a three- two barrel Tri Power configuration. This is an extremely rare carb and intake system. The carburetors are the large 2GC Rochester two barrels. The manifold is an original Max Balchowsky exhaust heated tri carb intake. Very few of these were ever made. It is an extremely rare piece of street rod history. For more technical information on this carb and intake manifold, go to nailheadbuick dotcom/rarebuickspeedparts. . Triple velocity stacks. The internals are built to Super Wildcat 465 specifications. Custom Zoomie headers with muffled inserts. Electric fuel pump. Electric cooling fan. Rebuilt Turbo 400 transmission with elevated shift points. Nine inch differential, posi-traction, with 3.80 gears. Boxed, reinforced frame. Frame has been completely smoothed and powder coated. All components in the undercarriage are either powder coated or chrome. Chromed front straight axle with modified wishbone. Four inch dropped spindles. Adjustable chrome shocks. Disc brakes. In the rear, chrome coil over shocks. Panhard bar. Four link. Drum brakes. Driveshaft loop. This beauty is show quality underneath also. You can put mirrors under this vehicle when on display. This street rod has a mere 3,958 miles since completion. It is a fresh, complete rebuild. The cost of restoration is north of $100,000. This is a one time opportunity to own one of the finest at less than half the build cost. Don't hesitate, street rods of this quality and price seldom become available. The selling price is well below actual value. Don't hesitate on this opportunity. Call Randy at 847 456 7726 with any questions.
