Vehicle Detail
Looking for a rare piece of automobile history? At auction is an extremely rare 1948 Dodge B1B108 4x4 1/2 ton Woodie Wagon. This is one of 5 or 6 four-wheel drive Dodge woodie wagons known to exist, and it is the only one built on the civilian B1B108 chassis. It is in original unrestored condition and has had only four owners in its 65 year life. The 3rd owner had this woodie from 1962 to 2006. It has been garaged most of its life. The majority of its driving time since 1963 has been limited to parades and vintage car shows. In 2012, it spent 6 months on display at the San Diego Auto Museum. It is also prominently showcased in Dave Fetherston's book, "Treasure Box of Classic Woodys", which is a limited edition book of only 500 copies. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This 1948 woodie was built on a Dodge B1B108 chassis with a wood body by J. T. Cantrell & Sons of Huntington, NY. What makes it most unique, however, was that it was delivered to its original owner outfitted with Four Wheel Drive Dodge Power Wagon running gear. This woodie was ordered in 1948 by a lady rancher in The Dallas, Oregon to be her personal vehicle for driving around the ranch and into town. J. T. Cantrell & Sons had built wood bodies on the flat fendered 4x4 Dodge Power Wagon chassis, but this lady rancher did not like the military look of the flat fendered Power Wagon body. Instead, she ordered her 4x4 woodie to be built with a 1948 civilian truck body. To accomplish this one-off request, Dodge sent a standard two-wheel drive 1948 windshield cowl chassis to Cantrell where the wood body was installed, and then had the 4x4 Dodge Power Wagon running gear installed by the Murty Four Wheel Drive Company. There is a small name badge on the grill just below the Dodge emblem that says “Murty Four Wheel Drive”. This is the only known Dodge B1B108 civilian cab 4x4 woodie to have ever been delivered to its original owner in that configuration. This is an unrestored original woodie with 36,000 original miles. Everything is in working order, including the spotlight and the cigarette lighter. The 1948 Cantrell bodies have roll up windows in the front doors and the rear doors have sliding windows. It has new 10 ply radial tires and the brakes are in perfect condition. This woodie is regularly driven up and down the Southern California Coast from Dana Point to San Diego to various woodie meets. One unique feature of this woodie is its Skidmaster Sanding System. There are metal holders mounted on each of the inner rear fenders that hold sand canisters about the size of a large Quaker Oats box. When the sand canisters are placed in the holders they are punctured by a piece of metal that looks like an old can opener. There is a lever mounted in the steering column that is used to electrically open a trap door on the bottom of the sand canister holders. When the lever is activated sand flows thru a tube that comes out inside the outer fender just in front of the rear wheels. This feature was used to gain traction in icy conditions in the Pacific Northwest. Included with this sale is one of the original sand canisters which is still full of sand. Basically, this woodie is in good mechanical condition, especially for its age, and its over all appearance is OK. It could easily be restored to it's original factory condition because all of the parts are there and in working order. During the 7 years we have owned this woodie, we have opted not to restore it because as they say, "they are only original once." A fully restored Dodge 4x4 woodie from this era is currently for sale with an asking price of over $200,000.This woodie is currently garaged in Oceanside, CA. We can deliver the car anywhere in Southern California, or we can help load it for your shipper. NOTE: Due to the many scams that have been happening lately with vintage vehicle purchases, all payments will be converted to cash at the bank the checks are drawn on before the vehicle is delivered. In addition, we will not accept any over payments asking us to give money to a shipper or anyone else. If you are a scammer, move on to the next guy.
