She had always dreamed of owning one of these sleek automobiles and often expressed a desire to have a white one equipped with automatic transmission. Although she was thrilled when she first received the Corvette, she soon realized that the low seating position and limited visibility made her very uncomfortable when driving in traffic or parking. Because of this, she has rarely used the car. In keeping with our New Year’s resolution to part with the Corvette and buy a more suitable sports car for my petite wife, we’re offering this lovely classic for sale. To be honest, if it had a four-speed I’d keep it for myself, however it doesn’t and I already have a couple of vintage sports cars. Some Background Info: When I first located and inspected the Corvette, the woman seller informed me that she was the second owner and had bought the car with 89,500 miles on it in May 1988. She also told me the original owner of the car was also a woman, and she had purchased the car from a local Chevrolet dealership in 1977. The seller, who put approximately 29,000 miles on the Corvette while she owned it, also said that the car had been maintained by the same respected Corvette specialist (and auto repair shop owner) for more than 20 years. She then confirmed that fact by allowing me to review a large folder of work order copies, receipts, and emission testing reports dating back to 1989. The total dollar amount of the mechanical repairs and service work identified in these documents is more than $6,000. I was also told the Corvette had never been involved in an accident or abused and it was primarily used as a "weekend car" when the weather was good. Speedometer/Odometer/Mileage: • The original factory-installed speedometer head (odometer gear) failed at approximately 100,500 miles and was quickly replaced with a new unit. Since that time, the Corvette has logged 18,042 additional miles. Therefore, the actual total mileage on the car is approximately 118,500. Frame/Body/Interior/Paint/Glass/etc. • The steel frame and undercarriage of the car is in excellent and very clean original condition. There is no rust or damage anywhere. The floor pans directly beneath the driver’s and passenger’s foot areas were professionally reinforced from underneath at some point, so there may have been some corrosion present at one time. The floorpans are very sturdy now. The doors and hood open, close and lock properly. Both doors have brand new black weather seals. • The body of the car is in excellent original condition throughout. The Classic White paint looks beautiful, however there are some minor blemishes, lacquer micro-cracks and paint touch-ups if you look closely. The optional factory installed chrome luggage rack is in perfect condition and looks great. • The entire interior of this car looks almost new. It is beautiful and completely original. The top of the dashboard has no cracks and all interior door and trim panels are in excellent condition. • The red leather covered seats are original. Both seats look great and are extremely comfortable. There are a few very small blemishes in the surface of the leather that were repaired at some point in the past. All of the carpet is original and in amazingly good condition. The high quality Lloyd's floor mats are brand new and look fantastic with the beautifully embroidered Corvette crossed flags logo. Cost $130. •All glass is in very good shape. The power windows work properly as do the door locks, door handles and other hardware. There are a few small scratches near the bottom of the windshield from the wipers. • The removable T-Tops are in excellent condition and latch securely. I purchased new black vinyl storage bags for the T-Tops for $50 but they were never used. They will be included with the car. • The retractable headlights open & close properly and the tail lights, turn indicators, high/low beam dimmer and hazard flashers all work as they should. • All dashboard gauges and switches operate properly and look great.. The windshield wipers, blower fan, defroster and heater all work great. Both sun visors are original and in very good condition. The seat belts are original and work perfectly. The interior dome light isn’t currently working and the horn works intermittently. Engine The original 350 cubic inch engine starts easily, idles smoothly and runs well in hot or cold weather. It is very clean, completely stock, and does not tick, knock, smoke or leak a drop of oil. The carburetor was rebuilt in the past, however I believe it could use some adjustment since the engine sometimes idles a bit high. Because this car was built early in the 1977 production run, the engine was painted Chevrolet orange at the factory – not blue – as was used on later 1977 Corvettes. The seller informed me that as a result of forgetting to check the engine oil and coolant level back in the brutally hot summer of 1989, she had badly overheated the engine while stuck in a traffic jam on Interstate 95. Fortunately, when the car was brought to her trusted Corvette specialist for diagnosis & repair, he recommended the original engine (with 95,000 miles already on it) be removed, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt to assure the reliability, durability and performance of the engine in the future. Having the original engine properly rebuilt was extremely important to the seller because she was planning on keeping and enjoying the Corvette for many more years to come. With authorization to proceed, the Corvette specialist removed and disassembled the engine. The block was then boiled out and Magna-Fluxed by a professional machine shop for the purpose of identifying any heat-related stress cracks, warping or damage that might have occurred when the engine overheated. Both cylinder heads were also cleaned, inspected, Magna-fluxed and rebuilt at that time. Fortunately, the block and heads were found to be in excellent undamaged condition and the Corvette specialist then performed a rebuild that included the installation of: 8 new pistons, new piston rings, new main bearings, new cam & cam bearings, new timing gears/chain, all new gaskets, new oil pump, and many other new parts. The final cost for the engine rebuild was more than $2,600.00 in 1989 dollars. A copy of the detailed work order detailing the engine rebuild will be provided. Transmission/Drivetrain/Brakes/Suspension/Etc. • The Turbo 400 transmission performs well in every gear and operates quietly and smoothly. The shifter works well and selects all gears properly. • All six universal joints in the driveshaft & half-shaft axles were replaced with new GM units a few years ago. The cost for parts & labor was over $700. • The power-assisted brakes stop the car effectively, however the seals in the driver’s side brake calipers need attention as they have begun to leak from lack of use. The parking brake holds securely and releases properly. The updated Monroe shock absorbers are in very good condition and provide a very firm but comfortable ride. The steering components all appear to be in excellent condition. The car steers accurately and responds well to driver input. The lower ball joints and tie rod ends have been replaced. The exhaust system is in very good condition. It produces a low exhaust note that sounds fantastic! • The cooling system works well, was recently flushed, and does not leak a drop. The power steering works properly however the pump or hoses have begun to seep some fluid. All of the radiator hoses and belts are in good condition. The spark plugs were changed recently. The air conditioning system works properly but no longer blows as cold as it should. My mechanic says the system is in good condition but needs to be evacuated and recharged. • The aftermarket Pioneer sound system was installed about 20 years ago and looks brand new. There are speakers in the front and flush mounted speakers in the rear luggage area. The system also has a removable face and remote control unit that’s in perfect condition. The power connection to the unit needs attention because it’s not currently working. • All four Dunlop GT Qualifier tires look beautiful and are in like new condition. The full size spare tire and wheel are in very good condition. • A replacement owner’s manual and Chevrolet color promotional brochure (for the 1977 model Corvette) are included. Additional Items: • New Blower Motor • New Engine Fan Clutch • New Windshield Washer Pump • New Thermostat • New Horn Relay • New Speedometer Cable • Heavy Duty Battery Documentation & Terms of Sale I received a Bill of Sale document from the seller when I purchased the Corvette – but did not receive the Connecticut Certificate of Title because it had been misplaced. Because the Corvette has been registered in Connecticut since new, a duplicate copy of the Title is readily available from the Connecticut DMV for a small fee. I never proceeded with getting a duplicate copy because Titles are not required in Connecticut on cars more than 25 years old. Please note I will sell the Corvette utilizing a Bill of Sale document only. This 1977 Chevrolet Corvette will be sold in “as is” condition with no warranty of any kind offered or implied. Payment in full must be made within 48 hours of the auction close. Payment may be made by PayPal, wire transfer or by bank check. If payment is made via PayPal, the buyer is responsible for all transaction fees. The buyer agrees to assume full responsibility for the vehicle as soon as it has been paid for in full and the funds have cleared the seller’s bank. The buyer assumes all responsibility for picking up, insuring and transporting the vehicle. The seller reserves the right to end the auction prematurely and sell the vehicle privately if so desired. Good luck bidding on this iconic American sports car!
