For Sale: 1968 BMW 1600 2-door Sedan – (One request: Please contact seller BEFORE bidding if you have a feedback number less than 10. Buyers with low number can bid, but must contact seller FIRST, or bid is subject to being blocked.) Incredible 1968 BMW 1600, rare opportunity, for sale at NO RESERVE. Located in beautiful central Pennsylvania, 15 minutes from the car mecca of Hershey, PA. First time offered to the public on the open market (only other time was at an estate sale in 1984.) Title shows 40,375 actual miles, backed up by inspection and maintenance records. The chassis number indicates this car was the 19th of this model produced in 1968 (see VIN table chart). This vintage Bimmer, newly minted in early 1968 in Germany, imported to the US, was purchased new here on April 9, of that year. Imported by renowned Hoffman Motors of New York, distributed by Manheim BMW Sales and Service, Manheim, PA. Whoever wins this auction will get the original Hoffman Motors window sticker, service book with owner and service information, battery warranty, owner’s manual, and service station guide. This little car was the twinkle in the original owner, Eleanor Rook’s eye, until her passing. The car’s next chapter was the Rook’s estate sale on September 1, 1984, advertised at 36,000 miles at that time. The next owner purchased the car for $3,100.00, and dutifully maintained the car. In 1999 it was repainted; for some reason they repainted nice original cars back then, but it’s a nice single stage with a silky patina - Florida Green, considered one of the most desirable colors for these cars. The doorjambs, boot, and engine compartment are all original factory paint in excellent condition. Engine: The matching numbers engine runs with absolutely no smoke at start-up or when driving. Pull the choke, two pumps on the accelerator, and it starts right up. Four speed works effortlessly, as does the clutch. Boot: This car sports a perfect, rust-free, original boot area. Comes complete with tool and jack. Sumptuous details, such as the untouched spiral-wrapped wiring harness at rear panel, all-original wiring under dash and engine compartment, ORIGINAL factory-applied black gloss paint on gas tank, and the shiny backside of the taillights are testaments to this car’s amazing condition. Exterior Anodizing: Near new condition on front grills and belt molding. Door dings on belt molding behind driver door. Chrome: Front and rear bumper and accessory optional bumperettes - super nice with very minor pitting on front and rear center bumpers. Wheels: Factory painted dull aluminum with a few thin spots showing dark primer. The hubcaps are all original, with minor dents. Early cheese cutter-style trim rings are nice with some flat spots from possible improper use of tools. Glass: all glass on car is near perfect condition, wing windows open and close effortlessly. Undercarriage: Absolutely amazing original undercarriage. Keys: Original to the car. Two hinged ignition keys, one boot key. Numbers on keys match serial numbers on locks and booklets. Interior: Absolutely original beautiful Tobacco Brown deluxe bucket seats, no headrests. Original carpet with no hint of rust under carpet, panels, or seats. Door panels are amazing, headliner and sun visors are in nice condition, seats are firm and adjust with little effort. Drivers seat bun might need minor restretching, NO signs of deterioration. Everything, including all accessories - except the clock - works on this car! Padded dash is crack/warp-free. The lovely center console screams “utilitarian.” Radio delete. NO evidence of rust EXCEPT on a spot behind pax side rear wheel (see picture on Photobucket). Inside wheel wells and undercarriage have factory undercoating only. Original Florida Green paint is easily seen underneath with the barest rub. Clear PA title. Note: License plate featured is decorative only, not included in sale.
