NO RESERVE - Great running and looking 1948 Chrysler New Yorker "Suicide Door" Sedan up for auction, 5k on drivetrain 323 cubic inch "straight eight" motor, "Fluid-Drive" semi automatic transmission, attractive seafoam green and tan combination. I bought the Chrysler from an older gentleman who owned it since the mid 1970's. The New Yorker's previous owner had the engine rebuilt in the mid 90's, along with a newly upholstered interior, about 5000 miles on the car since motor rebuild. I've had the Chrysler for a little over 2 years now. I've done the following work on the car: I replaced the original tires with modern radials (less than 1000 miles on tires, rims sanded and painted, hubcaps in great shape) with "Port-O-Wall" whitewall inserts, put in a new carburetor, new plugs/points/wires/etc, replaced all four brake shoes, installed rear brake cylinders and brake lines, replaced the tranny fluid and installed a new six volt battery. I even put in powered six volt speakers mounted under the dash that turn on with the ignition; the stereo jack is in the glove box so you can use your Ipod (or anything with a standard stereo jack) while cruising in this cool 1948 New Yorker! The Chrysler is solid and straight, all the doors open and close easily. My mechanic was amazed by how clean the car is underneath. The body is very straight, floors, trunk and frame original and solid, never hit, always garaged and babied. Includes some extra parts including a brand new exhaust header pipe, various handles and hardware, Sears 6 Volt battery charger and many still packaged NOS parts. Many neat little features still work; the rotating driver's side spotlight, the flashing warning light letting you know the emergency brake is on when you turn on the ignition, the weighted window crank handles (they're heavy so they always hang down), the rear vent windows open (all the other windows work properly as well), all glass is good, no cracks or discoloration, and the air vent below the windshield opens and closes (it's got a cool glass topped handle inside). The heat works with the separate temperature and fan controls, the gas guage, wipers and horn work and all the lights work properly as well. The radio does not work but I was told at a car show it's fairly easy to get working, the speaker probably needs replacing and the radio probably needs a new tube or two. There's one tear in the headliner behind the driver's rear side vent window, otherwise the interior is nice and intact with a nice velour finish. The paint is faded but presentable, a new paint job would make the Chrysler truly stunning. Cruises nicely on the highway, holds the road perfectly with the modern radials (original tires were in good shape but no fun to drive on). Engine starts easily (cranks for a second or two and turns over) even after sitting, doesn't leak anything, garage floor always dry when I pull her out. "Fluid-Drive" semi automatic transmission works well, you only use the clutch to get her into forward or reverse gear and then drive it like an automatic. You can stop at a light and it downshifts automatically and pull away as you would with an automatic transmission. Runs very strong, tracks straight as an arrow and brakes evenly, no pulling or fading. Drives overall like a Post War Classic should. She's roadworthy, as I mentioned all directional/brake/turn signal/headlights work, as well as wipers and horn. VIN is 7072430, odometer shows 23095. She's a pleasure on the highway and driving around town, I always get smiles and "thumbs up" when people see the New Yorker coming. Classic Chrysler which will only appreciate in value!
