Vehicle Detail
No Reserve Auction! Please read the detailed description completely prior to bidding. You are viewing a very rare survivor example of a 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Sports Sedan. Color: Bleu Olandese. (dark blue). It is fitted with the original factory 2000 cc engine and still retains the original "Spica" mechanical fuel injection. It has a 5 speed transmission (transaxle) mounted in the rear for a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Type 116.58. Vin # AR116580001301. Being sold with "no reserve" in an effort to thin my Alfa collection. You can bid with confidence from a long time member of the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club. Brief overview: Excellent driver. Mechanically in excellent condition. 2 Liter Fuel Injected engine runs strong. Fitted with very rare "European" Headlights and Euro Grill. Has beautiful wood steering wheel. Has "Ansa" rear twin tip exhaust. The Alfetta has been my daily driver for the last 6 months while my MINI Cooper S was out of commission. I put about 5,000 miles on it which is the most use it has seen in many years. It's a blast to drive and truly impressed me with how great these Sedan's are. Brief history: The Alfetta has seen very little use for the last twenty years or so, where it had been used as a weekend and nice weather car. It had been owned by the proprietor of a well known Alfa shop in Chicago (Autosport). He had the Alfetta re-painted in the original color - Bleu Olandese (dark blue) once back from the paint shop, the Alfetta was stored in the back of the shop and had been left untouched for at least a few years. He ultimately sold it to a customer who proceeded to put the trim/bumpers/door handles/door gaskets back on the car. At that point it had been serviced by the other Alfa shop in Chicago - Mike Besic - who repaired the brakes, fuel system including new fuel pump/filters. Major tuneup and some suspension work which included "Shankle" lowering springs in the rear as well as lowering the front torsion bars to match the rear height. I believe it lowers the Alfa about 1inch all around. Although this work was done about 5 years ago, there were very few mile driven since. Most recent work with less than 7,000 miles includes complete clutch replacement, water pump, radiator repair & driveshaft donuts. The engine/fuel injection has just been adjusted/set up by one of the top Alfa shops in the country. Thousands of dollars have been spent maintaining this Alfetta. Thousands of dollars have been spent maintaining this great Alfa. The most recent work done - Clutch, water pump, donuts, radiator etc....totaled over $5000.00 Needless to say, someone is going to get a great deal on this Sport Sedan! The body: It is in good original condition with no evidence of body damage or accident repair that I can detect. Most notably the Alfetta does not have the typical rust on the inner fenders as shown in the engine compartment. The body is very clean with no dents and very few door dings if any. Always carefully taken care of and careful parking in parking lots. The most notable rust is the left rear wheel arche as shown in the pictures. Other rust spots consist of a few misc bubbles on the rear door and a few on the wiper cowl. At some point the spare tire well received a fiberglass repair job and then painted with Por 15. Floors and rockers are solid and original. The panel fit is excellent, and the doors close with a "thud". A few weeks ago, I got a stone chip that turned into a "crack" which is on lower portion of the windshield near the passenger side. Front license plate bracket has since been removed. The body is straight and clean, and the paint looks good. Lastly, it is fitted with early style factory side view mirrors which give the Alfa a much cleaner look. The mechanics: The Alfetta is in excellent mechanical condition. As stated, it has been my daily driver for the last 6 months/5000 miles. Under the hood you can see it's essentially all stock and correct. The engine/engine compartment is clean and tidy. All lights are in working condition including the license plate lights, blinkers, brake lights etc....Runs cool and has no overheating issues. Just had a new water pump & radiator repair. Transmission/clutch in excellent condition. As stated, it has a fresh clutch assy with about 6,000 miles on it. It does NOT have the typical 2nd gear syncro issues and does NOT grind when shifting from 1st to 2nd....which is a rarity in Alfa's. Also new driveshaft donuts make for a very smooth driveline without the typical Alfetta/GTV6 vibrating driveshafts issues. No clunks when shifting either. Pulls very strong in all gears and is one of the faster 4 cylinder Alfa's I have driven. It still retains the original Spica mechanical injection which was recently set up and is running very nicely. As I had mentioned, I have driven the Alfetta many times at 100+ mph and it's really very smooth and very predictable. The steering is tight as well as the suspension. There are no strange noise or clunks in the suspension. The car is fitted with a matched set of tires which have plenty of tread. They are mounted on the original factory alloys which had been painted dark silver at some point, but the paint is flaking on a few of the wheels. The wheels themselves are in good shape with no noticeable curb rash or damage. The ignition switch sometimes is finicky, and will not start the car. A bypass starter button was installed for the few times this occurred. It does have a newer battery, and does not have any issues with the charging system. The oil pressure gauge is finicky, and I suspect a new sender is in order. The front and center section of the exhaust will need to be replaced at some point in the future. Also, I just noticed that the exhaust manifold does have a crack in it - it's quiet enough that I didn't notice it. I am quite certain I have a replacement manifold that I will include in the auction. As best as I can tell, it does not leak engine or trans oil. It even has a fresh set of wiper blades. The interior: It is in good original condition. It's clean and doesn't show much wear for being 35 years old. Ashtrays look like they have never been used. Has nice custom floor mats that match the interior. Door panels are in nice shape as well as the door handles/window cranks. Seats have the typical split seams which is common to Alfetta's & GTV 6's. The rear seat has a rip as shown in the pictures. The front passenger side window regulator needs to be replaced. I have a replacement, but never got around to installing it. I will include that with the auction. It is fitted with a "Personal" Alfa wood steering wheel with the "Alfa logo" on the horn button. The horn button did not work, and a separate button was installed. Has the original shift knob and unlike most, is not faded to "white". There is no radio fitted, and quite frankly the sound of the engine is all you need to listen to. For those in the warmer climates, the Alfa does not have A/C. The heat works great, however the heater motor is noisy and may need some work. Summary: Great running/driving example. I would not hesitate to drive this Alfa anywhere! Comes with a clear Michigan title. Being sold with "NO RESERVE" I have done my best to describe the Alfa to the best of my ability/memory. I may have missed something, so ask any questions that may not have been addressed. Keep in mind that this Alfa is 35 years old and does have some minor issues that have been outlined. Do not make any assumptions about anything - once again, ask any questions you may have. Since this is a no reserve auction, the high bidder will be the owner of this great Alfa. Do not bid if you do not have the means to follow through with the auction. The "fine print" The Alfa is being sold in "as is" condition with no warranty expressed or implied. If you have 5 or less feedback transactions, you must contact me prior to bidding. Also, if you have 2 or more negative feedback ratings in the last year, you must contact me as well. A non-refundable deposit of $500.00 is due within 24 hours of the end of the auction. If the deposit has not been received, the Alfa will be offered to the next highest bidder. The balance is due within 7 days of the end of the auction. The Alfa must be picked up within 10 days of the auction end date. A $10.00 per day storage fee will be charged unless prior arrangements have been made. I have sold several vintage cars to overseas buyers with the buyers being extremely pleased with the sale. My 100% feedback rating speaks for itself, so you can bid with confidence. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to answer any questions you may have. I will consider ending the auction early for the motivated buyer that would like to make a serious offer. I do reserve the right to end the auction early. Once again, this is a "NO RESERVE" auction. Make sure you have your funds in order prior to bidding. On Nov-16-12 at 20:44:23 PST, seller added the following information: A few things I forgot to include in the description - when the Alfa was in storage at the Alfa shop, somehow the roof was scratched at the edge near the driver's side door, it had been touched up. Also, if you look carefully at the rear of the car, you can see there is no lock cylinder for the trunk lock, it's an easy fix if you want to be able to lock trunk. Lastly, keep in mind that this a 35 year old vintage Italian car - the year was 1978, and this technology was quite impressive. It's not a new car and it's far from perfect. Looking to find an Alfa enthusiast that appreciates how great these Sedans are and can give it the use it deserves.
