THE REAL DEAL OriginalOwner:In May of 1969 Mary took delivery of a 1969 Camaro Z28 from East Side Chevrolet in Milwaukee, WI. Her parents bought the Daytona Yellow Z28 for her in High School. After graduation, Mary left Milwaukee for the University of Miami to study Marine Biology. She graduated from the University of Miami and found employment at Marine lab on Key Biscayne. The Z28 was her daily transportation and she had it serviced regularly at Dumas Miller Chevrolet on Bird Road in Coral Gables. A fellow employee of hers named John remembers she was having trouble with oil fouling of the number 8 cyl spark plug. She asked him to help her fix the Z28. John began maintaining the Z28 for her and eventually bought it on 1/5/1973. Second Owner:John, Purchased the Z28 and brought it home and removed the Original 302 and installed a 327/365 hp Corvette engine that he was running in his 57 Chevrolet. He crated the original 302 and stored it in his garage. John drove the Z28 and maintained it himself until he sold it to his High School buddy Bruce of Hollywood, Florida along with the crated ORIGINAL 302 ENGINE on 1 / 29/ 1982. Third Owner:Bruce, was an avid Corvette enthusiast. I met Bruce in 1981 shortly after I moved to Fort Lauderdale with my parents. I was 19 years old, driving a white 62 Corvette and he was driving a 57 Corvette. We met at a local Saturday night cruise spot called Nebas on Sunrise Blvd near the beach. He belong to a Local Corvette club called Vintage Vettes of South Florida. He asked me to come to a meeting and I joined the club. The club met regularly on Thursday nights for meetings. Bruce arrives one Thursday with a 1969 Daytona Yellow Z28. We all crowded around the car. It was stunning. After the meetings club members would take their Corvettes and go out for dinner. Bruce raced a few of the club members and beat them. What a night!!!! Bruce used the Z28 as daily transportation and after a few parking lot dings and dents he offered the car for sale at one of the Thursday night meetings. I jumped on the chance and bought it on Sept 11, 1985. I went to Bruce’s house to pick up the Z28 along with that precious ORIGINAL 302 DZ engine in a crate as a base to a glass coffee table in his living room. We Loaded up the car, engine and a box with the original AIR Pump, tubes and hoses taken off when the car was new. I was off to my shop. ( On a side note Bruce eventually wound up owning John's 57 Chevy years later). Fourth Owner:David Brecher, I owned a Corvette repair and restoration shop called East Coast Auto in Fort Lauderdale in the early eighties with my dad. I parked the Z28 in the end bay for a few days until I decided to do a full restoration on it. Well back then there was not much information restoring a Z28. Dobbins had a facts book on Camaro and one other book by another author at the book store How to restore your Z28 which was not to informative or correct. I decided to put my Corvette knowledge and skill to work on the Z28. I took photos of the car and began disassembling. It was a full blown project that started fast tracking . Keep in mind I was only 23 single owned my own shop had no other responsibilities just myself business and cars. When we were slow I would have some of my employees even grab a part or two and glass bead or sandblast them. My local Chevrolet dealer Gary Fronrath Chevrolet ordered all my parts. It was nice buying new GM fenders for $40.00 it didn’t pay to strip the originat paint off the original ones and repair them. The parts truck arrived daily. GM weather strips, dash pad datedOctober 1981, tail lights, grill, w/o moldings, dash vents, window whiskers and L/S full 1/4 panel. By today’s standards NOS parts. Lots of them. I stripped all the factory undercoating by heating it slightly with a torch and scraping it with a plastic scraper. After I wiped every inch of undercarriage with mineral spirits the yellow over spray was untouched. By the time Christmas came around I had the body painted in Lacquer and each fender and body part painted separately and rubbed. I REBUILT THE ORIGINAL ENGINE and TRANSMISSION and installed them on the sub- frame. I even started the engine while it was on the sub frame with no body attached. The entire nose was built on the sub frame. I was ready to slide the body together by New Years day 1986. By the first week of January the car was rolling and interior and trim began to be installed. With the help of Al Knock Interiors the new reproduction seat covers and buns where installed at Cypress Gardens NCRS meet January 1986. By the end of January the car was complete. 4 ½ months from purchase. That spring I entered the car at the World of Wheels in Miami. The Z28 won first place. I sold my shop that same summer and moved back to NJ to be with my girl friend and enrolled in College. That fall the International Camaro Club had its second annual Camaro Nationals in the Pocono Mountains in Pa. I took the Z28 for judging. I pull up to the hotel and a crowd started gathering around the car. There were some nice original Z28, several Yenkos but a full blown NCRS type restoration to this extent was not seen. I won First Place in the Z28 Class & Best Stock Z28 in Show. The car was used as a comparison feature in a Muscle Car Magazine to a new Z28 at Raceway park in Englishtown, NJ. I never saw the article but it turned some good times at the track. The following summer I sold the car at Summer Carlisle to continue paying for College and to buy a 67 Corvette. I had logged 4200 miles on it after the restoration.Body painted in 1986 and getting ready to attach to front clip Front Clip in my parents garage completed in 1986 Me in 1986 at the Camaro Nationals with winning trophies. Fifth owner:Billy was a used car dealer looking for a muscle car at Summer Carlisle. He fell in love with the car and we struck a deal. He flew up to NJ the following week and drove the car back to Virginia.. Billy had only accumulated 640 miles on it before he sold it the following year at a local car auction. About half the mileage was accumulated driving it back to Virginia. He said the car was too nice to drive. Sixth Owner:Harold, Purchased the car with on 5/25/1988 and held on to it until December and sold it with anadditional 200 miles to a Ford dealer in North Carolina. Seventh Owner:Courtesy Ford owner Frank, purchased the car from Harold for his collection. The Z28 sat among Cobras and other Muscle Cars. It was only driven 12 miles in twelve years. He used Robert Cannon’s Corvettes as a broker to sell his car collection in 1991. Eight Owner:Mario, Purchased the car through Robert Cannon’s Corvettes in 1991. He owned the Z28 for 11 years with only 710 miles added during his ownership. He sold the car on Ebay. Ninth Owner:Scott, Purchased the Z28 on Ebay on Feb 2, 2002. He kept the car stored in his garage and changed the fluids. He drove accumulated 221 miles during his five years of ownership. Tenth Owner: Me againDavid Brecher I’ve always kept Billy's business card and in the last 10 years have been trying to find my old Z28. I knew it was the real deal. I often wondered what happened to the car. I’ve done title searches and have come up empty. As prices on Z28 escalated I set out to find the car. In Jan of 2007 I got lucky. It was on Ebay and recognized the car by its stance in the pictures. It appeared untouched with the exception of tires. The hose clamps where in the same position as my restoration photos after 22 years. After some questions and numbers checking the only valuable part removed was the original DZ Carburetor. The Z28 arrived at my home from Indiana via enclosed car trailer. Without even driving the car first my son and I pushed it back in the garage and began to remove the engine, transmission, exhaust and entire front and rear suspension to re-detail. I contacted Bruce the third owner who lives around the corner to come check out his old Z28. I started back tracking the prevoius owners to put together the ownership history over the last 22 years. I contracted the help of Jerry MacNeish with sublet parts restorations. Ninety Days later she was back detailed to show condition inside and out. IN 22 YEARS THE CAR ACCUMULATED ONLY1,344 MILES. I entered the Camaro in Super Chevy Sunday show at Moroso in Palm beach and one first place in the Stock Camaro Class Eleventh Owner:I sold the Z28 to Mark on 12/3/2007. He contracted me to find an original DZ carburetor and install it. I had the original water pump restored and installed it as well. We went over the punch list that Jerry recommended and corrected most of the small items. The car was shipped enclosed to Mark . During his ownership , he had driven the car 450 miles. Mark never titled the car. The car stayed close by when Mark sold it to James who was the president of Mark's company. Twelveth Owner:James, Purchased the Z28 on 8/10/2010 from Mark. He drove it home and to an occasional cruise night. I repurchased it again on 6/4/2012. Thirteenth Owner: I guess if a car is good enough to own twice then why not three times!!I spent about 60 hours re-detailing under the hood, plating and cleaning. I also replaced the front coil springs. I purchased the set from Jerry MacNeish. The original set comes with the car. Cars Current Mileage is 123811. Since 2007 the car has been driven a total of 1542 miles.
