Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Vehicle Description: This vehicle is a proud part of my rare group of unique, performance automobiles. It is an original California model AHB customized as a unique boulevard cruiser that gets looks and comments every time I take it out on the street. I have owned and maintained this vehicle for several years as a pleasure craft and NOT a daily driver. That is far from a problem when you have other vehicles for daily transport and a truck for work. Stepping on the gas will show you the miles claimed on this engine are not a weak attempt at hiding a rollover lie on the odometer. This thing has a zest to be driven on the highway and a comfort that makes you want to go on a trip. Overall Summary: Some vehicles are lemons for life. This car seems to be blessed. I have never had a traffic collision or a moving violation with it. It handles like a sports car, yet it has the size and space to carry people out to dinner. A fine example of a rare classic, this Diplomat is a well cared for street machine with design roots in the performance era of the early 1970s. From its large powerplant to its rear wheel drive, the AHB Diplomat is from an era before OBD computers and endless array of operations sensors. When I pull into a gas station, I not only get patrons wanting to take a look, but it is not uncommon to get a mechanic to come out and ask if I want to sell it. They love the easy mechanical layout, big brakes, sway bars, cooling systems and endless tweaking possibilities for power and performance. Needless to say, the miles put on her in my ownership are free of abuse and accidents. I am not a teenager, nor a speed demon. As you see the condition in the photos, this beauty has led a charmed life over the years. It looks, runs & drives anywhere with style. I would not hesitate to take it on a road trip. If there were anything I was looking forward to doing, it would be refreshing the paint. It is fading and starting to blemish. I was thinking about a really glossy metallic black… Dark colors really set off the chrome… But I would not wish to sell it with new paint to someone who would rather go in another color direction. So you be the judge. Mechanical: At the time of this posting, there are no mechanical problems that will leave you stranded and angry. The trusty V8 work horse motor in it was utilized by Chrysler for over 30 years so parts both stock and custom are available. There has been a complete top end rebuild around 105K which included new high RPM lifters with an Accel hi-po starting system. I restored the engine to the stock specs and re-installed the original carburetor and a new rear cat and back exhaust system. I added an aluminum Edelbrock (50 state eligible) intake which is lighter and far more efficient than the stock unit. New fuel pump, filter, hoses. New power steering gear for that snug control expected of a machine of this caliber. I also replaced the tires, brakes, front hubs and added aluminum wheels. I even installed extra dirt and rock deflectors in the wheelwells to prevent build up in the hidden corners of the panels. The A-C system has been expensively converted from the old R12 to the modern and economical R134. The compressor is a big, stock C171 unit from the factory that keeps the air cold even in heavy heat conditions. Body: The body is solid. The undercarriage has none of the cold weather, ice or road salt damage of the typical cars of this vintage. All windows operate freely and properly. All door weather-stripping has been replaced and is supple. The Setina push bumpers have been removed for daily driving but mount to the original bumper with a wedge adapter. They are quite rare but I may offer them for an additional fee. Interior: The interior of this vehicle is as fine as you will find anywhere in the Chrysler line. Any interior panel or part that was worn has been replaced. The original Spartan interior has been replaced by plush décor including soft shag carpeting, velour pillow top 60/40 seating in front with fully powered driver’s seat and fully reclinable passenger seat. Rear bench is so virgin it looks new. Woodgrain dash cluster and door paneling, Italian wooden steering wheel, and color matched accessory tote. I installed a tilt column and power trunk lock accessible through a button in the glove box as in the 5th Avenues. The complete dashboard and driver’s underpad has been color matched and protected with a multi-coat urethane finish. It always looks freshly cleaned and thus never needs to be spray cleaned. Of course, my auto detail shop disregarded that info and sprayed it just above the gauge cluster. This left spray marks in the urethane which I covered with a woodgrain appliqué. If you choose to return it to gleaming red, it will not be a difficult undertaking. I custom installed the gauges to fit properly behind a Diplomat Special Edition dash cluster so that they look as if they came from the factory this way. All interior lighting is a very cool red color that delights my occasional passengers and offers a less stressful load on the eye at night. I will include extra dash bulbs in event they need replacing. The stereo Radio has both cassette and CD with stock speakers in the front and enlarged, powerful speakers in back!
