Vehicle Detail
A very rare example of a legally imported British right hand drive 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300SL that went through EPA and DOT conversions when imported into the US in 1991. Complete and original import documentation is included. Again this is a 1987 model and not a 1980. A little history... This 2 owner Mercedes was originally purchased new at Sparshatt Jones Ltd. Mercedes-Benz, just outside of London by Famous guitar player of the band The Who, Pete Townshend. The car was later traded back in with 16,000 miles on it purchased by the second owner shortly thereafter. The original sales documents show that the original purchaser was Graham Victor Woods. This was the attorney for The Who. After the new owner had agreed to purchase the car, she had to wait several weeks until Townshend returned from his holiday home in Spain to take possession. When she received the car, the registered license plate was "WHO66" which she had to agreed to return to Townshend as soon her replacement license plate came in. Townshend's vanity plate was as valuable as the entire car because vanity plates are like "shares of stock" in England so she said. The Mercedes spent a few years in England until being importred to the states in 1991. It spent 15 years in Sarasota, FL and then to Burbank, CA in 2006. This Mercedes has been meticulously maintained since day one. It comes with a large stack of service receipts dating from 1988 until now. It looks, runs and drives excellent. The 6-cylinder engine runs super smooth and powerful and feels to have all the power of the large V8 without the fuel consumption. The transmission shifts flawlessly as well. It drives down the road super smooth and comfortable with no noises, rattles or vibrations. All power features work properly including power windows, locks, mirrors, all instrument gauges including clock, updated Sony CD player with brand new JBL speakers and power antenna. Since the car was designed for English climates it was sold without air conditioning but the heater and vents blow strong. The Smoke silver paint over the original brown plaid interior is one of the nicest color combinations I have ever seen. The body is laser straight and rust free. It has never been involved in any accidents and a perfectly clean Carfax report is available upon request. It was refinished in its original color around 7 years ago due to some sun fading and still looks/shines like new with only a few stone ships or light scratches to mention. The top was also replaced with GAHH canvas and looks brand new as it was never used until a few days ago. The original hard top looks perfect and new and is included with the sale. The original European short bumpers are in excellent condition as well as all chrome trim and moldings. Updated Mercedes wheels were installed in 2006 for a smarter appearance. I removed the 300SL emblem from the trunk as I prefer a cleaner look but would be happy to reinstall it at the new owners request. The interior is as beautiful as the exterior. The original brown plaid seats and door panels are very unique as Mercedes never offered it in the States. The seats, carpets, door panels and dash are all in Very Good original condition. There is a small spot showing some wear in the center bottom of the drivers seat and the Burlwood console shows a couple minor hairline cracks in the clear. This is one car that I hate to let go as I have enjoyed every mile that passed me by. Please do not consider purchasing unless you enjoy people staring and giving you the thumbs up wherever you go, especially driving with the top down and empty passenger seat. Included with the sale are 6 keys, original owners manuals, original import with EPA and DOT conversions, a stack of service records, original tire inflator, hazard triangle, tool kit, passenger floor mounted fire extinguisher, unopened first aid kit and original full spare wheel and tire. Please call me with any questions you may have or for many more pictures of this one of a kind 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Scott ~ 305-804-9550 Note to Mr. Townshend: Hello Pete, Big time fan here, If you somehow run across this auction and have more information to give and quite possibly an old photo with you, the car and the WHO66 plate, I and everyone else would Love to see it! Cheers, Scott
