0 0 1 617 3519 ProSight Specialty Insurance 29 8 4128 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Up for bid: An extraordinary example of the Datsun Z Car: a 1973 Datsun 240z, completely stock but for a removable sound system, with very low mileage(~33,000). I grew up loving z-cars. My first car was a Datsun/Nissan 280z in high school, and when I had the chance to bid on this car on eBay over Christmas break in 2003, I was thrilled with the opportunity to have such a pure example of one of my favorite cars in automotive history. Since then, I have babied the car and serviced it and restored it with an eye to the collector. I have replaced many hoses in the engine bay with original NOS (New old stock) braided hoses instead of modern hoses (where I could.). I have had it serviced by Z-car specialists (Petaluma Auto Works in Petaluma, CA) with genuine parts from Motorsport Auto in Orange, CA. Aside from various engine items and upkeep, the main things that I have done of interest to the buyer: 1) The entire brake system (rotors, calipers, pads) has been replaced with OEM parts in 2009 and works perfectly and looks beautiful.2) All the shocks and springs have been replaced with OEM parts in 2009. I retained the original parts for the enthusiast if they want to replace them for some reason.3) I upgraded the electrics and the alternator using Motorsports Auto’s kit (Specifically the headlight relays and wiring and an upgraded alternator). Old z-cars are notorious for their weak electrics.4) I installed a speaker box from Motorsports Auto with 2 6x9 speakers and a JL audio amp (mounted beautifully on the ‘wall’ behind the drivers seat) and a “stealth” head unit that looks like a classic car unit but has modern electronics and a stereo input for my iPhone. I retained the original head unit for the enthusiast if they want to replace it – it works great and is a valuable part. For those who aren’t aware, the original sound setup for the 240z is very weak, with a single speaker at the rear driver’s side that is completely incapable of reproducing anything but AM talk radio. My main goal since owning the car was to make it a joy to drive, so I had the motor tuned, suspension renewed, and brakes renewed. It pulls really hard, sounds great, stops great, and feels great driving around town. I also added the sound stuff so I could listen to music, but did so in such a way that a purist can reverse everything. The car has very low mileage, and has been kept mostly up in a country house in Sonoma (where it is currently garaged) and driven occasionally to give it exercise. If you are a 240Z enthusiast who is looking for a great example to use to restore to a perfect car, this is just about as close as you will get. Vehicle History: I purchased this Datsun for $11,201 in 2003, and have put a bunch of money in it related to the items above. It is clear that it has been repainted. It has 1972 carburetors, as is common with 1973 cars because the OEM ’73 setup was abysmal. Even the most finicky collectors accept that this is an acceptable setup without marring the originality of this car. Disclosures: I’m a big believer in letting buyers know everything before they decide to bid, because a true enthusiast wants to know what they are getting, good, bad and indifferent. For that reason, I list the following items that I believe are notable, although you should expect that a 39 year old car has various wear and tear items. 1) There is a crack on the dash, as with most Z cars of this era. I did not put a dash cap on it (that’s lame) and never pulled the trigger on a new-old-stock OEM dash or a rebuild. Pretty much every z-car from this era will exhibit this condition, unless the owner has done what I just described. (picture provided)2) There is a slight crease in the sheet metal on the driver side of the hood at the very front. It is relatively minor but noticeable. (picture provided)3) There is a ding on the passenger side door (picture provided)4) There is some minor paint bubbling/rust at the front fenders. Very common with this car. If you want to buy to have a perfect show car, you will need to do some strip/repair/repaint.5) The clock doesn’t work, but it is correct twice daily The car is at my country house in Occidental, Sonoma, CA. I am in NJ. My in-laws live at my country house and can facilitate inspections or delivery pickup, but I won't be there.
