1973 AMC Gremlin With no fresh finds on the horizon, I jumped at the chance to drive to the valley and check out this Gremmy X. I was met by an alternative rocker. He had a new baby and was hunkered down for the long haul. The Gremmy has to go so the star chief could stay. I poked around the Gremmy for all of 10 minutes before we struck a deal. I had Doc tow it home so we could knock the dust off and give it a good spray and wash. I'll tell you car nuts, this one has some of the coolest aging that I have seen in a long time. The Gremmy logos and stripes have sun cracks and give off a marbled look. I'm not one to hype up some 40 year old paint, but this original car reeks of cool. I wouldn't change a thing on this exterior. It's preserved with just the right amount of wear and tear. This little Gremmy has aged magnificently. The mechanicals however, are in a shambles. It look likes the Gremmy had an oil leek for 30 years. The engine bay and undercarriage are coated in thick, dirty grease. Always one to find a silver lining. I can tell you this thick coat repels water. I wiped away at the engine bay and it still a brilliant yellow under the dark cloud. This is a great solid project. We got it to sputter a little bit and will continue diligently to get this old girl to fire up and run. The previous owner said it needed a water pump. Maybe he meant a fuel pump?
