A total of 10,278 models were produced. Considered to ‘the best small sedan we ever drove' by the February issue of Car and Driver Magazine, the 1600 was reasonably priced and affordable to most at the time. At $2,500, the 1600 series was extremely economical with up to 30 mpg highway. Beginning with the 1600-2, the two-door model, rolling off the runway, it was an instantaneous hit.” (Source: www.conceptcarz.com)I wasn’t planning to purchase another vintage automobile when I unexpectedly came across this low-mileage and amazingly original BMW being offered for sale a couple of years ago. However, when I visually inspected and test drove the car, I gave the woman owner/seller a check on the spot. In all of my 35 years as a dedicated vintage BMW enthusiast, I could not recall ever seeing a more complete, original, solid and unmolested 1600-2 coupe. At that time, I also learned that the BMW had been in the woman’s family for many years and it was always garaged and well maintained. She believed the 76,962 shown on the odometer was accurate because the car was mostly used on weekends and she was selling the 1600 because she’d sold her Connecticut home and was relocating to Florida. Unfortunately, when I inquired about the car's service records, I was disappointed to find out she hadn't saved them when emptying out her house and packing to move. After keeping the car parked in my garage for almost a year, I contacted a professional auto body specialist/painter that has worked on my collector vehicles in the past and asked him to handle removing the factory original (but badly deteriorated) Chamonix White paint, repairing all of the "parking lot" type surface dents & scratches in the body, priming the body for paint, and repainting the entire car with high-quality Dupont acrylic enamel. In keeping with my plan to restore the 1600 into a beautiful weekend “driver” and not a flawless show car, my restorer and I came to an agreement on a price and work got underway late last summer. Today, after investing a great deal of time and nearly $9000 in the purchase, cosmetic restoration and mechanical improvement of this lovely classic car, I’m offering it for sale because I unexpectedly just bought a superb 1972 BMW 3.0 CS. So, whether you are a novice enthusiast or a long-time collector looking to acquire a vintage BMW that's already in “excellent” condition – this elegant 1600-2 coupe is a beautiful, affordable and increasingly collectable automobile! Please be aware that the current market value of a 1969 BMW 1600 coupe in "excellent" condition is $11,300 - $11,700 based on the Ebay/Keith Martin collector car price guide (May 2012) Good Luck Bidding! BODY • All body panels are in excellent original condition. My auto body specialist discovered a few small spots in the fender bottoms, front air-dam, inner wheel wells, and rear wheel arches that had been sanded down, sealed with POR-15 rust converter/sealer, patched with body filler and painted at some point in the past. However these repairs were found to be in very solid condition so they were not removed. • The front grille is in good condition and was repainted in bright silver. I did not have the eight vertical strips that mount inside the “kidney’ grille reinstalled because I prefer the open look, however they will be included with the car. I had the two headlight grilles painted gloss black to create more color contrast and an aggressive appearance, however they are in very good condition and could always be stripped to reveal the original aluminum finish. • All of the floor pans are completely original, solid and in excellent rust-free condition. The rocker panels have a few small dents from improper jacking in the past, however they’re very solid and look good. The chrome trim strips directly above the rocker panels are in very good condition and polish up beautifully. • The hood, doors, and trunk lid all open & close properly. The right door latch needs a minor adjustment because the door does not close as tightly as it should. All glass and chrome window trim is in very good condition with a few minor scratches. The bottom right side of the windshield has a small scrape mark caused by a broken wiper blade. The windows in the doors wind up and down very easily and the rear windows and vent windows open and close as they should. All black rubber window and door seals are original and appear a bit dried out, however they still perform well. • The front and rear bumpers are in excellent condition, very solidly mounted and have a few small scratches. The chrome belt-line trim encircling the body appears to be mostly original and has a few small dents and scratches. Because it’s been my intention from the beginning to keep this car as original as possible, I decided to have the original trim strips put back on the car instead of replacing them with new ones. Replacement trim strips are readily available from www.pelicanparts.com for $50-$100 each. • The entire engine compartment is in excellent condition and has no rust or damage. The engine compartment and underside of the hood was painted flat black at some point in the past. Both were thoroughly cleaned and repainted in flat back because it looks great. • The trunk compartment is in great condition and still has it’s original gray factory floorboards! It was thoroughly cleaned, primed and repainted. The rear shock absorber mounting towers and trunk floor are in solid condition and look great. The trunk-mounted gas tank is also in excellent condition and does not leak or smell of gasoline at all. The chrome exterior “button” for opening the trunk works well but the key slot inside the button has been removed. As a result, the trunk lid closes perfectly however it does not lock. PAINT • The body of the car was professionally repainted less than six months ago and it now looks brand new! All of the car’s exterior panels were thoroughly sanded, primed, and painted with 5 coats of Dupont “single stage” Chamonix White (paint code #8722IE). I had the car repainted in it's original factory Chamonix White color because I'm a purist and believe the creamy white finish looks very elegant and sporty at the same time. Because my objective from the beginning has been to restore the car into a beautiful weekend “driver” and not a perfect show car, all of the body panels are now in excellent – but not flawless – condition. ENGINE/TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN/BRAKES/SUSPENSION/EXHAUST • The 1.6 liter engine is “numbers matching” original and very clean. It starts easily, idles smoothly and runs great even in hot or sub-freezing weather. It has good compression in all four cylinders and does not smoke or leak a drop of oil or coolant. A new water pump and high quality Interstate battery was recently installed. The spark plugs, ignition points, condenser, ignition wires, fuel filter and air filter are all in excellent condition. The motor oil and oil filter was changed recently. The cooling system was flushed and filled with new coolant rated to 30 below zero. The fan belt and cooling system hoses are in excellent condition. The main wiring harness and all other wiring is in excellent condition. The clutch was inspected and adjusted by my BMW mechanic just before I bought the car. It engages and disengages perfectly and makes no release-bearing or other noises of any kind. The transmission works well in every gear and operates quietly and smoothly. The transmission and differential do not leak or seep oil at all. The shifter works well and selects all gears (including reverse) properly. The brakes were inspected and adjusted right before I purchased the car. They stop the car very effectively and do not pull to the side or squeal. New brake hoses were installed for both right and left front brakes. The parking brake holds and releases properly. The shocks and struts are older units but still provide a comfortable and stable ride. The steering components all appear to be in excellent condition. The car steers accurately and responds well to driver input. It does not “wander” or feel loose. The exhaust system is in good condition however the pipe between the header and muffler is quite rusted and will need to be replaced in the future. The protective rubber boots on both axle shafts are in excellent condition. INTERIOR: • The interior of this car looks almost new! It is beautiful, completely original and spacious enough for four large adults to sit very comfortably. The dashboard and all of the interior door trim panels are in excellent condition. Two very small cracks in the lower dashboard pad were repaired and are now barely visible. The headliner is original and in excellent condition. • All gauges are original and look great. The speedometer, odometer, tripometer, gas gauge, water temperature gauge, dashboard indicator lamps, headlight on/off switch, turn indicators, high/low beam dimmer, hazard flashers, windshield wipers, windshield washer, blower fan, defroster and heater all work properly . The cigarette lighter is original and still works great! The clock is not currently working and the horn works intermittently. • The dark blue vinyl covered seats and headrests are original. The driver’s seat looks very good and is quite comfortable, however it would benefit from some new foam rubber padding and tightening up of the seat frame. The driver’s seat bottom had some split seams that were repaired in the past, however these repairs are holding up nicely. The front passenger seat and rear seat are very comfortable and in excellent condition. Both front seats and the driver’s headrest have some small patches in the vinyl material. Both front seats slide easily on their tracks and are easy to adjust. Both sun visors are original and in very good condition. The front lap & shoulder seat belts and the rear lap belts are original and work perfectly. • The carpets are original and still look presentable, however they are worn in spots. I contemplated replacing the all of the carpets, but could not find a new carpet set that matched the original one exactly. A set of floor mats would conceal the worn areas of the carpet. New carpet sets are readily available in several colors from www.worldupholstery.com for approximately $300-$350. The Becker Monte Carlo model am/fm radio is original and looks great. It is not currently working. An aftermarket Pioneer sound system was installed at some point during the 1970s. The door-mounted front speakers and package tray mounted rear speakers are in excellent condition. TIRES / LIGHTS /ETC. All four tires and wheels are in like-new condition. Three of the four tires are Kelly Celebrity brand and were on the car when I purchased it. One tire is a brand new Starfire and its tread pattern matches the Kelly tires almost exactly. The spare tire and wheel are in good condition The hubcaps are original and in fantastic shape. The BMW roundels in the center of the hubcaps are new. The headlights, taillights, brake lights, signal lights, reverse lights and hazard flashers work properly. Both license plate lamps work, however the plastic housing on the right lamp is cracked. The beautiful chrome driving lights are brand new and replicate the Hella brand lamps utilized by the BMW factory in 1969. They have not been wired up as yet. The jack and lug nut wrench are original. TERMS OF SALE This 1969 BMW 1600 coupe will be sold in “as is” condition with no warranty of any kind offered or implied.
