Vehicle Detail
Strong-running, high-mileage (220,000), five-speed manual Beetle in fair mechanical and cosmetic condition. Has a number of expensive performance modifications. DETAILS: This car is a little unusual. It blew a head gasket at approximately 150,000 miles and rather than simply repair the gasket the previous owner took the opportunity to install a number of expensive performance parts, including: · A Neuspeed supercharger kit, including a new chip ($2499) http://www.neuspeed.com/53/11/0/385/491093-neuspeed-20l-8v-supercharger-kit.html · A Neuspeed camshaft ($279) http://www.neuspeed.com/53/11/0/1889/601093-neuspeed-sport-camshaft-8v-hyd.html · A Neuspeed stainless steel exhaust system ($799) http://www.neuspeed.com/53/5/0/1514/3010892-neuspeed-stainless-steel-cat-back-exhaust.html How much difference these modifications make I cannot attest, having not owned the car previously, but I do think the improvement over stock is significant. Other than these three items, I believe the car is completely stock. Despite the mods, the car still gets between 25 and 30mpg in mixed driving conditions (27mpg the last time I tried to measure as precisely as I could). DEFECTS: The car runs well but has its fair share of issues, including, in order of severity: · Intermittent check engine light (codes for lean burning/excessive air). It has done this as long as I have owned it without any apparent differences in drivability. I suspect it is computer related (i.e. the computer forgot about the supercharger and thus reads too much air intake) but have never had a professional investigate. · Soft front suspension. I replaced the shocks and shock bushings last year but I suspect it needs new springs, although the soft ride does have its advantages on bad roads. · Burns a small amount of oil. · Spare wheel and tire are damaged. · Tires are okay but have seen better days (approximately 70% worn, I would guess). · One low-beam headlight bulb burned out (an easy fix). · 3 out of 4 hubcaps missing (two stolen, one lost and the last one removed so as not to look ridiculous). · Nicks and dings here and there, although quite minor, as can be seen in the photos. · Interior presentable but imperfect (good carpets and plastic surfaces but the stupid VW seat fabric looks old even when it is new. I don’t know how they selected this fabric). FINAL DETAILS: Clear NY title and currently registered. At minimum the check engine light will have to be sorted out to pass NY inspection, although it is possible you might get lucky and have it turn off just before taking it in. As I see it, this car is a reliable but slightly shabby daily driver that can go two directions. In the hands of someone mechanically inclined it can be brought back to its former glory without too much trouble or expense. In the hands of someone in need of basic transportation it can be flogged for a good number of miles before being parted out for more than was initially paid for it. When I bought the car three years ago I honestly expected to be the latter type of owner but the car has just kept going and going. Please contact me with any specific questions. I am not mechanic but I do know the car fairly well.
