Ford only built 5,000 of these special 20th Anniversary Edition Mercury Cougars in 1987. This one is all-original-- I even have the luxury floor mats with embroidered 20th Anniversary logo and the hardcover book entitled "Mercury Cougar 1967-1987" detailing the history of the Cougar, both of which were given to owners of the Anniversary edition, plus a factory showroom brochure on the Anniversary edition. The body of this Cougar is very straight, and the original factory paint, though not perfect, still has a nice gloss. The tires have lots of tread and the engine performs beautifully (the idle does surge up and down a few times at cold startup, but then finds the correct idle speed). The interior has been well taken care of over the last 25 years (note that the first owner had the car for 20 years). The only real flaw inside is a missing patch of fabric on the lower driver's seat. The trunk is dry and stain-free, and the dash is not cracked or warped. I'd guess the car was garaged most of its life. Other things I have recently done to the car: New muffler New sunroof seal (no leaks) Oil/filter change New u-joints Replaced coolant sensor (heat and A/C work great) *** The automatic transmission (with overdrive) shifts as it should in all gears, with proper downshifts, but can feel abrupt when reducing speed around 25-35 mph*** The car passed Oregon DEQ last July.
