Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle that my family purchased on December 2005 from the original owner in Vermont. The car was garaged most of its life and driven on occasion from 1980 - 1993, which is the year on the inspection sticker on the front windshield (1993). It was sold to us with 62,500 original miles and currently has 67,902 as my grandfather rarely drove it. When we originally received the car it had been sitting for a while, so the carburetor, gas tank, braking system, and bumpers were replaced. Here is a summary of the car as it stands today: Exterior: At some point in the past the rear decklid was replaced and the exterior was repainted the original color. The paint is beginning to show it's age, especially on the front hood and rear engine decklid. The front hood has minor pitting and the rear decklid has some peeling paint, showing the original red paint on the replacement part. The chrome on the aftermarket bumpers has rusted and is visible in the pictures. The floor pans are solid and the bottom of the car appears to still have the original under coating from the factory. There is a small dent on the passenger's side door. The original tow hooks are still present on the front and rear bumpers. All of the rubber seals are in good condition and the door seals are so tight they create a "vacuum affect" when closed! Interior: The interior is in great condition and appears to be original. The rear carpet has some damage near the battery side of the car, but otherwise appears to be in good shape. The front seats are in good shape and slide forward/backward and recline. The rear seat is also in good shape and folds forward for additional storage options. The heat works very well in addition to the rear defroster (electric) and the fresh air circulation system (two knobs on lower dash). The original "Fasten Safety Belts" light and buzzer works until you buckle the driver's seat belt. The headlight switch and windshield wiper swiches work, but the dimmer seems to be stuck on "high". There is a small crack in the dash, but otherwise it's in great shape. The original owners manual is included in the glove compartment. The headliner appears to be original and is in good condition. The seat belts retract, but need a little help occassionally to get started. Front Trunk: The front trunk appears to have the original cardboard inserts and is very clean. The windshield washer system works, but has a small pressure leak near the switch that should be an easy fix. The original sticker with the color code is present on the inner driver's side fender and is visible in the pictures. All of the original gas tank venting system is in tact including the original metal line that sends fumes to a smog filter under the rear passenger side fender and into the engine. The spare wheel appears to be original and the lug wrench is included. The gas tank, rubber gas lines, and fuel filter where replaced. Wheels/Suspension/Brakes: The suspensions is in good shape and handles well, including the front/rear shocks and front struts. The wheel bearings and brake drums have been replaced in addition to the master cylinder and the original rubber brake lines (braided stainless now). The wheels appear to be original and the tires were replaced about 2 years ago (Nankang brand). Engine/Transmission: The 1600 Dual Port engine and IRS 4-speed transmission appear to be original to the car and are in great condition. The fan shroud still has the original stickers from the factory on it, that are now barely visible in the pictures. The oil has been changed in the engine and transmission, and the valves have been adjusted. The original carb was replaced with a rebuilt unit, the coil was replaced, and a new genuine Volkswagen vacuum advance (SVDA) distributor was installed. All rubber fuel/vacuum lines and the fuel filter have been replaced (under gas tank). The engine fires up on the first few revolutions (usually the first) and runs without any issues or hesitations. The factory theromostat on the fan shroud is still present and working to help the engine get up to operating temperature on cold days without overcooling (until it warms up). The heater hoses from the fan shroud to the heater boxes have also been replaced. Summary: Overall this is a very solid and original car with low miles. It is not a show car, but is a very dependle "driver" that could easily be used as a good platform for a customized build, or be driven regularly and repainted at some point in the future. A tow bar is included with the purchase and can be used to tow to vehicle home. A car shipping service can be used, or the car can be towed home using the tow bar shown in the pictures. Payment Terms Unless other arrangements are made, full payment is expected in 7 days, with a $500 non-refundable depost via paypal within 48 hours of end of the auction.
