Vehicle Detail
"The Honda CB400F is a marvel: It handles remarkably well, stops with authority, snaps through the gears precisely--and motors along smartly. The bike feels all of a piece, as if a hundred separate design systems fell into perfect synchronization. Yet the attraction of the 408 transcends its obvious competence. Even a card-carrying Anglophile would agree that the CB400F has real character. If you can't respond to the CB400F's electrifying mechanical presence, you should immediately switch your sport to checkers."--Cycle, March 1975 For your consideration, here is a beautiful example of one of the most interesting and influential motorcycles of the latter part of the 20th century, from its first year of production, in the original "Varnish Blue" that was unique to 1975. Stemming fom the dynasty started with the Honda CB750, the CB400F is arguably the first successful small displacement four cylinder sport bike, and marks the first time the thrilling sound of a four-into-one exhaust was heard on the street. Coupled with a then rare six speed transmission, four carbs, a wet weight around 390 lbs., and excellent handling, it's easy to see why this bike was known as a 'giant killer', capable of over 100 mph in stock form, and a successful racer as well. Called "elegant" and "jewel like", the 400/4 Super Sport was factory designed in a mild cafe racer style, with low bars and mildly rearset pegs. This sample currently has slightly raised bars fitted, but comes with the original bars, too. The rear shocks and springs are newer, but the originals come with the bike. Everything else is pretty much original, including the original gas cap - your local Honda rep will remind you that it's the subject of an ancient recall, and offer to replace it for free! Note the excellent genuine Honda exhaust, original tool kit, and tool kit cover. The chrome instrument covers were a classy period-correct accessory. Also included is a pair of the original style tires (no longer roadworthy, of course, but great for a collector), a box of miscellaneous lenses and bits, a fair batch of paperwork, receipts, etc., and a bike cover. With fairly low miles (about 21,710, plus possibly a few extra for periodic short rides to keep everything in good shape), it's a well maintained bike with the following recent work: timing chain adjusted, new front brake caliper & bleed screw, new NOS Honda mirrors, new rear tire, rebuilt front forks, new tapered steering bearings, new battery, new seat lock. Oh, it's worth noting that parts are not hard to come by, with several US sources (notably Charlie's Place in San Francisco) and the great David Silver Spares in the UK. The right side cover shown in the photos has a few cracks, but I have an original NOS 1975 "Varnish Blue" right cover & new grommet which come with the bike. I have the clear title in hand. It runs like a top; I'm only selling because I'm a fairly sedate guy, and have decided to use a little Suzuki thumper for my occasional in town riding. For more about the bike's condition please see the many photos. Serious buyers, please ask any questions! Buyer responsible for pick up here in Sarasota, Florida. It is 37 years old, so it is sold strictly as-is, but will be correct to this description.
