Vehicle Detail
Up for bid is my "baby" that I have had for 5 years and has brought me untold hours of driving as well as renovating pleasure. She is a 1980 VW 1.5 diesel rabbit pickup that I have changed ever so slightly over the past few years. Those of you who are familiar with the "caddy" know that 1980 was the first production year of this fun little truck which is equipped with the 1.5 diesel which vw upgraded to the incredibly powerful (not really) 1.6 diesel from 1981-1984. I am selling her now because I have moved out of state to attend school and only return periodically to Virginia.I bought her from a gentlemen in Roanoke Virginia and the car had not been driven for a while and had managed to sink into the earth a couple of feet. I have replaced quite a bit on this car and most of the history of this vehicle can be told through the photographs but I will try to list all my hard work. 1. Right front and left front fenders2. Removed both front and rear bumpers3. Removed original square headlights and grille and replaced with round headlights(from a beetle) and a grill from a 1979 rabbit which was long enough but not wide enough so this sparked the creation of my custom polished aluminum grille accessory. 4. Installed custom blinkers on both the front and the side of the vehicle and all are operational with the exception of one side blinker that works intermittently5. Installed new battery and tray which were relocated to the passenger side of the vehicle to make room for the 12 gallon veggie oil tank which was to be installed in the old battery location6. Replaced all vacuum, diesel, and hose lines7. Replaced an entire brake line8. Both tail lights have several chips in them9. Removed the windshield wipers and put rain-x on the windshield...now you can see the entire road10. All new tires have less than 5000 miles on them...sadly a "non-Volkswagen lover" walked past my baby and stabbed her in the foot...I mean tire, while I was away so we repaired the sidewall and it has held up. If you feel as if this would be unsafe, I have included (2) additional tires (old) mounted to the rims and they are now in the truck bed and are part of this sale, although, I have driven about 200 miles on this tire11. The entire truck is covered with about 5 coats of bed liner, as well as the interior. The bed liner is a wonderful rust inhibitor so I sanded her down to the bare metal and applied (5) coats over a period of about 2 years. Needless to say that this vw has no more rust issues.12. The floor pan was loose so I screwed it back into place and poured about 5 gallons of fiberglass thus creating the most indestructible floor ever in the history of Volkswagen...now impervious to IED's and small nuclear blasts13. Dynamat (sound attenuation barrier) has been installed on the floor and the ceiling of the cab, as well as under the hood. This was placed over the fiberglass and the bed liner in the cab14. Created custom door panels out of 1/4" plywood and then covered with bed liner to match the interior15. Installed Vanagon cup holders to door panels...I love these cup holders...and so will you.......16. Installed oil pressure and water temperature gauges17. Installed Blaupunkt CD player/Radio but never bought antenna for radio. The door handles rub against the speaker grilles so you may want to change this with a different type of handle 18. Rewired the lights, heater blower, and the cooling fan to independent switches...a few days after the headlights began to work on the original switch so now you have a backup19. I started to remove the rain tray but only got halfway...simply gets in the way of working on the engine and does nothing. During a good rain, the water drips through the engine bay into the car..passenger side mostly. My solution was to drill a hole in the floor with a drain plug...water in....water out...problem solved20. Installed new battery and tray but moved the entire unit to the passenger side of the vehicle to fit the 12 gallon veggie tank to the old battery location. According to my research, a 12 gallon tank can be accommodated in that location. Not yet accomplished but feel free to complete what I started.22. Gas gauge broken23. The Parking brake needs to be repaired...just needs a spring24. The manual transmission needs another adjustment. I adjusted it last year and its very simple..one bolt..loosen and tighten. I have been having trouble getting it into 5th but nothing that double clutch won't fix. Just remember, this is a 32 year old Volkswagen so things are going to need a little work...its far from perfect but I really love this truck. I get better than 40 MPG and she has never let me down. I feel like I have done much more but I can not remember in detail what had been repaired or changed on the truck, but I think you get the idea. I was just in Virginia for a short time, and the following items on the truck need some attention:1. One of the welded connections that hold the tailpipe in place has vibrated loose so I have temporarily wired it back into place 2. I believe the rubber portion of the gas tank filler neck needs to be replaced. these trucks have a metal filler neck that runs to a rubber hose, attached by hose clamps, then to the tank itself. I put a few gallons into the truck and I saw some fuel leaking from that point which stopped after about 10 minutes because it was simply too full. I would not put more fuel in until it is driven some, the hose replaced and the clamps tightened. If you are in the area and would like to see the truck, just ask, and I will set it up. If you have questions, please feel free to ask and I will respond to you as soon as possible. This is a no reserve auction and I want to see my project go to another Volkswagen Enthusiast like myself instead of the crusher....Good Luck! On Jan-27-12 at 14:46:14 PST, seller added the following information: One more thing...I have several Vw parts in my back yard..a few from a jetta and the front bumper from this truck. The winning bidder is welcome to take some or all of these parts when you come by to pick up the truck...no charge...if you want them fine, if not, fine. Thanks again for looking at my baby........
