69 CAMARO PACE CAR PROJECT ORIGINAL PROTECTO PLATE Unrestored - Off the road since 1975 No Eng/Trans Clear Title in my name Wanting an original Pace Car but afraid that you might be buying a fake? To the best of my knowledge, what I have here is an original in its unrestored state - with its' original paint. And the license plate and title show it to have been off the road since around 1975. I purchased this car in the early 90's looking basically as it sits now. Finding this car now is like taking a 25 year step back in time. Dreaming of a "barn find". This might be it. WHAT IS BEING OFFERED From what I can tell, this is an original Pace Car convertible that has never been restored and has been off the road since 1975 or so. Included in this auction is: The convertible shown in the various pictures The Protecto Plate warranty document pictured The Oklahoma "brown title" pictured (offered solely as a part of the history of the vehicle) The present "green" Oklahoma title which is in my name HISTORY AND VISUALS Is it real? That's probably one of the most frequently asked questions of any pacer - given the disturbing rise in fakes out there. With the unfortunate lack of GM documentation, the unrestored condition of this car makes it much easier to document since it can be pictured and documented as such before the restoration begins. Additionally, there is the warranty document, commonly called a protecto plate. Finally, consider the fact that I purchased this vehicle approximately 25 years ago - in the mid 80's. It has basically been "frozen in time" for those 25 years. With this kind of history and documentation it should not be hard to back up the originality of this car once it is restored. ORIGINAL STRIPING - You can even see a hint of orange overspray Other side's striping. Close up showing original pin striping along quarter. Upper front cowl area on LH side. Note original orange paint in cavity areas. Upper front cowl RH side. Has correct A/C cowl bracket, etc. Dash area. You can see Fan switch for A/C, Rosewood dash, and orange deluxe door panel (well worn). Note that radio area has not been cut for aftermarket unit. AREAS OF INTEREST Below are some close ups of various parts of the car which I thought would be of interest. Close up of LH front area. Note that front end damage was not that severe. Original front shaker still present. Other side with only similar minor damage. Also still has front RH shaker. Close up of master cylinder area showing SS master cylinder, and disc brake proportioning valve. AREAS OF CONCERN FOR RESTORATION PURPOSES No matter how original a car might be - you don't want a rust bucket. Here are some shots of areas which can be quite rusted out on some cars. Although the lower trunk was rusted out, and hence cut out for restoration, note how the upper areas still have the original spatter paint - a great sign of a truly solid car. As you can see, the other side also has its' original spatter paint. Spatter paint by back leaf spring support - RH side. How many Camaros have you seen with rust here? Same thing other side. Note how both sides still have original shakers. Close up of LH quarter area. You can see where the previous owner had planned to replace the quarter with a patch panel. Note how rust free the outer wheelwell is. Minor rusting in the lower areas but nothing that is going to cause you to really worry during restoration. Close up of LH rear door jam area. Note that car has power windows. Front LH door jam area. Also note that car has center dash clock and power top as evidenced by power top switch in dash. As a further sign of originality, note the well worn deluxe orange door panel. Lower area of LH door - often prone to rust. While door will probably need a new skin due to damage, you have a very solid door shell to work with. Close up of rocker area on LH side. How many cars still have their original paint left in this area which is so prone to rust? Front toe pan. With proper preparation the toe pan could be considered usable and treated with POR or such. As you can see, the floor pans have been removed in anticipation of replacement. Here is the original front grille & upper cowl piece. Since the car was last on the road in the mid 70's it appears that a front end collision caused the end of this pacer's road days. Collision did not appear that serious as I did not notice any sub frame damage. Note also the power top pump. Metal back for seat has surface rust but does not show any serious rust issues, as you can see here. More of Dash area. You can see Fan switch for A/C, Rosewood dash, and orange deluxe door panel (well worn). Note that radio area has not been cut for aftermarket unit. Rear RH door jam area showing original paint and rust free appearance. Note also the original orange door moulding piece. Lower RH door area. Also very solid RH rocker area - again very solid. Note how RH quarter has some rust in wheelwell lip area. ORIGINAL 12 BOLT ??? No engine or transmission, but car may still have its original 12 bolt rear end. Given when I purchased this car, I believe that this rear end should check out to be original, although I have not run the numbers. VIN IS WITHIN TIME PERIOD The vin, pictured here, matches the Protecto-Plate and the title. If you review the Camaro Research Group site and review the CRG Research Report on 69 Pace Cars and Z10’s (http://www.camaros.org/69pacer.shtml) you will note that pace cars were all built between the 02D, or fourth week of Feb, and the 05A, or first week of May. Therefore, at a minimum, the vin for the car has to fall within this range. Their site also has a end of month monthly Vin report (http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#HowMany), which offers some guidance into which time frame the VIN of a particular Camaro was produced. Naturally the time frame of the VIN should roughly compare to the date on the trim tag. The VIN for this car is 124679N612286 which places it in an early to mid March production area since the last VIN for Feb 69 was 607164, and the last VIN for Mar 69 was 623587, which shows this car to be a March 69 production. VIN AND HIDDEN VIN MATCH It shouldn’t happen, but there have been cases of switched dash VIN’s. As you can tell, to be a true Pace Car the VIN has to fall within the 02D to 05A period, which this car does. Therefore the hidden VIN is quite important for any car of value. If you have never seen a hidden vin, you may not know that they are imprinted into the metal and have only the year of production, production plant, and the last 6 digits which correspond to the unit number. The hidden VIN reads 9N612286, which does match the dash VIN of 124679N612286. TRIM TAG The car’s trim tag was apparently taken off for restoration purposes by the previous owner. I have been unable to locate it. OFF THE ROAD SINCE 1975 ??? Close up shot of tag from 1975 with ZR 7607 tag, matching old brown title tag. Although it also received new tags in 76 and 77, apparently the car was not put on the road since the 75 tag is still on it. During this period in time Oklahoma issued a new metal tag each year. Below is a picture of the brown title I received in the early 90's. The name/address have been covered on the photo for obvious reasons. Note that the tag was renewed in 1976 and 1977. However apparently it was not on the road during this time since the 1975 tag was still on the car. Note the total delivered price of $4850. Most older brown titles I have seen show pricing in the mid to low $2000 range. This was one expensive car back then. PROTECTO PLATE Shot of the original metal "protecto plate" used for warranty purposes. The name has been covered for photo purposes. Note how the original dealer - Morris Chevrolet - has its stamp on the document. Plate and packet itself Front of the "Owner Protection Plan" packet PACE CAR REPLICA NOTE: Other than the 2 original pace cars used for the race, all other "Pace Cars" are correctly referred to as Pace Car Replicas. The car in this listing is not one of the 2 original pace cars, but rather thought to be one of the Pace Car Replicas. ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF NOTE Although car has title in my name, it does not have a current tag since it has no eng/trans and can not be driven. Loose parts inside of car have been removed, especially as relates to busted grille/header and rain gutter, and should not be considered part of auction.
