Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is the last of the big boys and the 440 Hi-Perf V-8. A 1978 Dodge Monaco, former CHP unit # 7982. This was an original slick-top with dual whip antennas, but is unknown as to where the vehicle was in service. This is an authentic vehicle, E-86, A-38 police package with the 3.21 rear-end. This car is very rust free except for minor surface rust and no rot. The floors, trunk, 1/4's, fenders and doors are solid. The original rubber flooring is also in decent shape. HISTORY OF VEHICLE: This vehicle sold at auction sometime between late 1979, early 1980, to the first private owner living in Palo Alto, Ca (S.F. Bay Area). A good friend of mine and a mopar collector, purchased the car around 1993 and used it as a daily driver until around 1999-2000 when the motor seized at 130K. The motor was completely re-built, along with the factory Thermo-Quad Carb, trans all serviced, complete A/C re-built, with the R-134 upgrade. The first private owner apparently had the trans re-built as well sometime after he bouth the car. Other items replaced were the Power Brake Booster, P/S unit, radiator, fan clutch, exhaust, brakes and a new windshield. He also had the upholsterey re-done, but not original, but close . I have the original gold colored cloth for the seats and the headliner is fine as well. MINOR ISSUES WITH THE CAR: The original dash has two cracks, but I have a brand new dash cap. Rear bumper could use a re-chrome but is so,so with a decent size crease on the drivers corner. The tires are old but have decent tread and are cracking. THE GOOD: Just had the entire car painted at an economy paint/body shop. It came out OK, but still has small dings and dents here and there. Please keep in mind that this not a 100 point show car or museum piece, but still very presentable. The car runs well, shifts, stops and does not over-heat. The car has a newer battery, remaining glass is nice shape, decent grill, front bumper, head-light bezels and bumper guards. All then lights and gauges work fine, the engine compartment was detailed but not 100 percent. NOTE: The valve covers are not original. Previous owner had aftermarket types and mis-placed the originals. These covers are off a 1977 Charger 400. The air-cleaner however is original. EXTRA'S A complete set of exhaust manifolds, trunk and door weatherstripping(new in box), interior seat belt cover, rear interior roof sail panels, excellent passenger side rear tailight, red nos side marker light, front grill, plus a 77 Monaco grill, dodge trunk emblem, headlight bezels, nos mopar Thermo Guard battery shield, rear view interior mirror with new glass(mirror), complete aluminum side trim (2) sets and some rubber flooring. EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: Front push-bar, have both the spot lights with correct brackets and white/red lamp. Handles are still in the car with the wiring, but not hooked-up, whip antennas, Federal-Signal PA 1000 Siracom siren, tested and works, correct Superscope 40-channel CB radio, Micor control-head, rear and amber rear package tray lights and a shotgun rack. I do not have the following items. Siren speaker, but wiring still there as is the wiring for the rear package tray lights, no Roxter style maplight, or the CHP decaling and door stars. The car is currently registered with a clear Calif. title with no back fees. For Ca. residents, a smog test will be required in April of 2012. It passed for me just fine in April 2010. This vehicle is a turn-key car, and can be driven it it's present condition, however, I would not recommend a long drive due to the condition of the tires. I drove the car up to about 50 MPH and backed-off. I would strongly recommend whom ever the winning bidder is should the car sell, either trailer or ship depending on location. This is a pretty solid all around police package vehicle and not many left. Bid to own another piece of CHP history, or replicate to another police agency. Most people know these cars and the Fury's were widespread in Law Enforcement during their days. If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me, or call (408) 448-1717. These are the only photo's you will see and have tried to get the best shots possible to illustrate the car. I accept Paypal for a non-refundable deposit of $500.00 and must be recieved within 24-hrs at the close of auction. Balance can be made with cash, in person, cashier's check and a money order. Winning bidder is responsible for their own shipping and /or pick-up of vehicle. Please do not ask for the reserve price, for I have placed a reasonable reserve based on the overall condition of the car. This vehicle is for sale locally and will be removed from auction should the vehicle sell. Thanks for viewing and good luck.On Sep-12-11 at 16:13:42 PDT, seller added the following information: There seems to be some confusion relating to the vehicle mileage. The actual and true mileage of the car is 147,645 miles. At 130,000 miles, the motor was re-built, along with the other previous mentioned items. Hope this clears up any suspicion or doubts someone may have.
