Vehicle Detail
1962 Austin Healey 3000 BT7 Mark 2 Tri-Carb Barn-Find Project Car The 1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mark 2 Tri-Carb cars are considered by many to be among the most desirable of “Big” side-screen Healeys. A total of 5096 BT7 Mk II Healeys were built, not all having the triple carburetor configuration. Austin Healey built the triple carb cars during the short period between March1961 and June 1962 so that they could qualify to equip their works racing cars with triple carburation (usually Webers) for FIA race and international rallye competition. HISTORY HBT7L18602 found me late last year when its previous owner, a retired USAF fighter pilot sent a letter to all of the Colorado Healey club members with BT7s describing this car. (I had a 62 MKII at the time.) He bought it in 1976 from an airman who was restoring it on the base he was stationed at in Virginia. The previous owner had (and still has) a nice example of a 62 3000 MK II at the time, and bought this as a potential parts car (which it never became). (Lots of photos at: https://picasaweb.google.com/brazilinkllc/Project62Healey3000Mark2?authkey=Gv1sRgCKPzivCi_anCVQ#) Upon being transferred to the Air Force Academy in 1979, he built a custom wooden box on a trailer for the car and towed it to Colorado. A friend had/has a farm in Eastern Colorado within a few miles of the Colorado/Kansas border. There the car sat in the box, on the trailer in the barn from 1979 until January 2011, when I bought it and towed it to Boulder. During the 31+ years the car was in the barn, the previous owner visited his friend annually, and kept the cylinder’s and crankcase filled with clean oil and turned the engine manually. He told me (though there is no certain proof in the form of receipts, that the engine had been rebuilt by the Austin Healey dealer before the car was laid up by the airman. It turns smoothly today. Even though the body is rough this car is also equipped with the highly desirable (and rare on side-screen cars) center shift overdrive transmission. Of the 5096 Left hand drive (LHD) models that were manufactured, most were shipped to the US and had difficult side-shift transmissions and in some cases disc wheels and/or the 2 carburetor engine. Consequently surviving LHD 4 speed overdrive tri-carb center shift cars with wire wheels are relatively rare and desirable. NADA values for all the 3000 Mark 2s can be found at: http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1962/Austin-Healey/3000-Mark-II/2-Door-Roadster-BT7/Values MILEAGE The indicated mileage on the speedometer is 40766. Is quite possibly correct given the near new condition of the speedometer and the fact that the car has been off the road at least since 1976. It’s rough and rusty body are evidence though that it was used extensively in is early years in a high rust climate, or it had been just left out in the rain. ENGINE & CLUTCH The engine turns smoothly by hand and with the starter and sounds good. The compression across the cylinders is #1- 137 lbs, #2 110 lbs, #3 150 lbs, #4 150 lbs, # 5 133 lbs and #6 138 lbs. Bear in mind this is after 31 years ina barn and without even a valve adjustment. I haven’t tried to start it since the triple carbs and linkage are apart in a box, and I haven’t assembled them yet. I have no information regarding the clutch since the entire drive train is in the car. A clutch master cylinder, off the car and apparently rebuildable is included. The clutch slave cylinder is in pieces in a plastic ig and will need replacement. COOLING SYSTEM & Heater The radiator was stored in a sealed double cardboard box with a note on the box from 1978 stating that it had been cleaned and rust removed. It is clean and has been painted. The car comes with a full set of new (in2009) Healey cooling system hoses (not heater). The heater appears to be in good condition and is clean and boxed. GAS TANK & FUEL SYSTEM The gas tank, like the radiator, was double boxed and sealed apparently cleaned and painted. It had a Sept 1978 note stating it had been cleaned and most “rust removed” All fuel lines are still on the car and have been sealed from the elements (but not the mice). They look like they should be serviceable; the fuel gauge was boxed and sealed. An electric fuel pump in pieces is in a plastic bag and box. You’ll need a new one. The original twin SU carburetors apparently in decent condition were separately wrapped in boxes. Due to age alone they’ll need a rebuild. Most of the linkage appears to be there. What is not is available from Moss Motors. CHARGING SYSTEM/STARTING SYSTEM If charging system means the generator, there is none (one of the few parts that went astray over the years. The voltage regulator and all other components were packed and sealed in boxes. The starter and solenoid are installed and work fine. One of the pictures on the Picasa website is a mini video in which you can hear the engine crank. TRANSMISSION & DRIVE TRAIN As mentioned earlier the car has the original center shift gearbox with non-synchronized 1st gear, joined to the Laylock de Normanville overdrive. I have not evaluated transmission and rear end either by dismantling them onon the road. They do roll easily and the gearbox engages. STEERING, SUSPENSION & DRIVE TRAIN · The steering unit is stock and apparently functions well as based on rolling the car around by hand. · The front and rear shocks are in place and appear to still work. · The rear elliptical springs are also still fitted and appears to work acceptably · New hubs from Victoria British were fitted on the rear in order to convert the car into a mobile state. There are no outer bearings nor brake assemblies fitted at this writing. The car was initially set up for rolling and then restoration. EXHAUST The two down pipes are in excellent condition (may have been new in 76). The exhaust pipe from the muffler back is NOS. It still has the labels. BRAKES · A rebuildable master brake cylinder is included and was boxed with the car · new brakes rotors, (not installed were purchased in June 2011) . New brake shoes are also supplied; · All calipers and brake-shoe cylinders were disassembled in bags. New/rebuilt will likely be required. BODY The body is one of the low points of HBT7L 18602. While the upper part of the body is in generally decent condition as are the main structure of the frame and structural sections of the tub, the car has severe rust problems. The good news is that they are all evident and “in your face” and not hidden. The body needs a complete restoration. All of the body parts are available from Moss and/or Victoria. The table below provides a detailed list with Moss parts number and price based With a 15% discount Moss is offering though 9/23 & free shipping is about $1642. It had been my intention (and still is if I don’t sell it) to make it into a rallye tribute car (Moss has the body pieces like side vents, etc.) GLASS The only glass on the BT7 is the windshield and it is in good to excellent condition. It is likely the windshield was replaced at some point. SEATS & INTERIOR There are no seats or interior. An original specification interior can be obtained from various east coast vendors for about $1600-$1800. The seat runners are present, but the car will need seats. polyurethane varnish. The interior dash handles is in good condition. The trunk comes with a complete new OEM specification upholstery kit, less the bottom mat that was used in another car. TOP AND SIDE CURTAINS The top frame is original and in very good condition. The latches are included in a box. There is no cloth top with the car. All of the rear snaps are present, although I’d replace them. The side curtains are also in surptisingly good condition. They will need rubber and probably Plexiglas, although some of it could be cleaned with Maguire’s plastic cleaner. WHEELS & TIRES New 175 15 radial tires and tubes were purchased in July 2011 to make the car mobile (the originals were in various states of disintegration). They, of course have no miles on them and are mounted on original specification wire wheels in decent condition that were sandblasted and painted. Two extra original painted wire wheels are also included. CHROME & ALUMINUM TRIM The chrome are in remarkably good condition with only minor pitting on the front bumper and rear trunk hinges. There is no rear bumper orr grill, although there is the grill surround for the grill top and the bonnet vent chrome. ELECTRICS & INSTRUMENTS There are smatterings of wiring here and there(e.g. battery-solenoid-starter) etc., but this car will need a new wiring harness ($450-500). All of the instruments, switches, ignition switch horn/directional, etc. were all seal/boxed and in excellent condition when I opened them. The oil pressure/temp gauge is still in the car, although not hooked up. WHY BUY IT? These cars are generally expensive, limited and number and hard to find un-restored. They are well worth the restoration effort for a motivated and talented person from both a financial and satisfaction standpoint. These cars are a gas to drive! Here’s a chance to get one at a low price. If it doesn’t sell, my moderate but constant effort will continue, and the next time you see it on ebay, it might be media blasted, or running and driving, or both!
