Vehicle Detail
It’s been a fun project over the years, but the time has come for me to move on. I have more cars than garage space at the moment, and it’s time to clean house. Offered up for sale is my turbocharged 1992 Miata, which I’ve owned since 2004. Some basic specs: Dynoed at 210 WHP, 202 ft/lbs (see dyno chart below.) This is roughly double the stock performance, and for a car that weighs 2,100 lbs, that’s a lot. In other words, this is NOT an appropriate car to give to your 18 year old son as a graduation present- he will die. 71,905 miles on the original engine and 5-speed transmission. Mitsubishi TD04H-15G turbo, with Greddy manifold and full 2.5” exhaust from turbine to tailpipe (TurboTony downpipe, Magnaflow cat, Enthuza stainless catback with Magnaflow muffler.) Front-mounted intercooler (2.5” core) and Devils’ Own MAP-sensing progressive water injection system. Torsen limited-slip differential with 4.10 R&P out of a 1997 model. ACT “HD” clutch package; adequate holding power but near-stock pedal feel. (No chirping or shuddering like puck-type clutches, and you don’t have to be He-Man to operate it. I’m a big fan of comfort and user-friendliness.) Most of the major seals and gaskets (apart from the oil pan gasket, as I’ve never needed to remove the oil pan) have been replaced at some point over the past few years. This car does not leak a single drop of oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid or power steering fluid. Timing belt, water pump, coolant hoses, etc are also relatively new. Nothing but Mobil-1 engine oil and filters and Redline transmission and differential lube. This is a meticulously maintained vehicle. Engine management consists of a Megasquirt ECU, Innovate LC-1 wideband EGO sensor with XD-16 display, Five-o motorsports 465cc fuel injectors, Walbro 190 fuel pump, Toyota coil-on-plug direct fire ignition (no spark plug wires), and a 36 tooth EDIS-style VR crankwheel pickup (far better timing accuracy than the stock camshaft-mounted sensors that these cars came with.) Raceland adjustable coilover suspension with urethane bump-stops (adjustment tools included. Comfortable enough for daily-driver use even by an old fart like me, but corners like it’s on rails. The vehicle is currently at a fairly reasonable ride-height (it clears speed bumps) however you can dial it down if you prefer the “slammed” look. Stereo system: yeah, it has one. It even plays MP3s. Headrest speakers mean you can actually hear it with the top down. Paint and bodywork are all 100% original. No rust, no bondo, no respray. Obviously it’s not a brand-new car, but it cleans up nicely. The closest thing it has ever had to body damage was when I backed into a large bush (admittedly, while doing about 40 MPH and surrounded by a cloud of tire smoke) which put a small dent into the rear edge of the trunklid and the rear bumper. I’ve included a picture so you can see this clearly. No damage to the paint, just a bit of a ding. The interior is exquisite as well- some slight fading of the seat fabric, but absolutely no rips, no tears, no chips, no cracks. Despite the turbocharger and related accessories, this isn’t some high-strung, fart-can-equipped hoondogger. The engine starts and idles on the first turn, purrs like a kitten (well, a kitten owned by James Earl Jones), and drives like a normal car around town. The exhaust note, while slightly deeper than stock, isn’t going to wake up the neighbors and attract the attention of local law enforcement. I take pride in the fact that, from 10 feet away, you’d never know there was anything unusual going on under the hood. I have two sets of tires and wheels for this car, and you can take your pick. The first is a set of the fairly rare OEM 14x6 semi-hollow seven-spoke wheels which, at 11.5 lbs, are very nearly the lightest wheel you can put on a Miata. At present, they are wearing a set of unremarkable all-season tires which you'll want to replace as they are frankly unsafe at this power level, however a set of Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1s or Falken Azenis 615Ks will give you an excellent road-holding setup and yield extremely agile cornering and turn-in. I also have a set of 17” Ronal wheels wrapped in 205/40 Kumho Ecsta 711 tires with nearly full tread. These are obviously heavier than the OEM hollow-spokes, but I offer them as an option as I realize that a lot of folks prefer the look of a wheel that fills out the car a bit more fully. READ BEFORE BIDDING: I am offering this as a no-reserve auction, as nobody can ever agree on what a “fair” reserve is. None the less, the winning bid is subject to approval by me- if the auction closes at an unreasonably low figure, the car is staying where it is. Thus, if you are the winning bidder, please contact me prior to sending the deposit. A deposit of $1,000 is required via PayPal within 24 hours of approval. This is to weed out deadbeats and scammers. (You know who you are.) Balance of payment prior to delivery is required within 14 days, via either PayPal or bank check by FedEx / UPS. Checks will be deposited and cleared prior to handing over the vehicle. I will not accept third party checks, checks from non-US banks, checks for more than the amount of the winning bid, etc. I will not accept bids from buyers in Nigeria, Russia, Milwaukee WI, or any other such place. (If you live in Milwaukee, sorry, but you’ve managed to elect three communist Mayors, so this is not the worst of your problems. Don’t believe me? Think I’m just blindly quoting “Wayne’s World?” See for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mayors_of_Milwaukee) Shipment is the responsibility of the buyer. I am happy to assist you in selecting an auto transport service and dealing with them on my end (I’ve shipped my own cars a couple of times as I’ve moved) but it’s ultimately up to you pay the carrier and ensure safe receipt. A note to buyers in California: while this car runs clean, and passed its last emissions inspection on the first try, it should be obvious that it is not entirely CARB-compliant (although it does still have the original CARB EO sticker from when the Greddy turbo kit was new.) If you “know a guy” or have some other plans, I don’t care and I don’t want to know about it. Although it was titled and registered in CA for four years (from 2005-2008), I moved to Florida in late 2008 to attend to some family business before moving back to California last year. The car is still titled, registered and insured in Florida, and the buyer will receive a Florida title and bill of sale. What you do with it after that is entirely up to you, and I wash my hands of any shenanigans which may ensue. ABOUT ME: I’m not an auto dealer, or even a guy who buys and flips cars. This vehicle has been my baby for the past seven years, but I’ve got more projects than parking space right now, and there’s a ’90 Miata with nearly a quarter-million miles (yes, I’m serious) parked outside the house that needs some love. I have been an eBay user since 1997, and have never had a single negative feedback. That’s about it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to respond promptly. On Aug-19-11 at 20:41:11 PDT, seller added the following information: Update: Unfortunately, Murphy's Law has it in for me. This afternoon (Aug 19) while backing into a parking spot at the grocery store, I managed to tap the sign that says "Compact Cars Only" with the rear bumper. There's no damage, but it scuffed the paint on the bumper slightly, and since I had noted earlier that the car had no paint damage, I'm updating this listing in the interest of full disclosure. Here's an updated picture: I know it's fairly late in the auction, but if anybody wants to retract their bid based on this, I understand and won't retaliate with negative feedback. Just trying to be as forthright as possible here, to avoid any surprises.
