Vehicle Detail
This is a 1982 Diesel Rabbit for sale in Dutchess County, NY. As is common for VWs of this vintage, there is a plastic gear broken in the odomoter that prevents it from counting miles. So miles are unknown. The engine was rebuilt by a VW factory journeyman mechanic a few years ago and has less than 3,000 miles on the rebuild. I bought the car to commute and then my job changed to "work at home" so only commuted for about one month. Since then, 2005, I have only driven this car in the summer, locally. I've only put a couple thousand miles on the car. The gentleman I bought from is a German VW mechanic, worked for many years for VW of America. He went through the car: replaced brakes, checked transmission, other maintenance items. I have replaced the fuel tank, fuel gauge, radiator fan/motor, glow plugs, ignition switch. This car runs great and strong. It starts right up in 0F degree weather with one glow plug cycle. It gets about 48 - 50 MPG. It has great power for hill climbing and highway driving. Given the longevity of these engines and the recent rebuild, I would expect the engine to last many years before the next rebuild. Manual 4-speed transmission. Full Disclosure Section: Air Conditioning and Power Steering are disconnected. I can't believe they even put power steering in these cars, totally unnecessary. But this was the "deluxe" model. The roof leaks in the rear--not a streaming leak, but enough to drip in the rear cargo area if heavy rain. The FM Radio/CD player is cheap and doesn't work very well. There is some body rust, but the floor is in good shape, no holes! This is a great commuter car. Do the math, it will pay for itself in fuel savings. Not many vehicles on the road can match the Diesel Rabbit in fuel economy. This is one of the best all time fuel efficient cars ever sold in the US market! On Aug-18-11 at 13:18:41 PDT, seller added the following information: More Disclosure: Noticed today there is a hole in the floor under driver's seat, about 4" diameter.
