Vehicle Detail
'86 Bertone X1/9 with 38K miles X1/9's are great little cars that are harder and harder to find in good condition. The values have really been going up lately as they have come into a collectable age. Don't miss the chance to get one and have an investment that you can have a lot of fun with. No reserve, bid and the car is yours (well, bid more than the other guy, and bid early, don't get sniped) This car has mainly just been in storage for the last dozen years. I bought it because it I am very much into X1/9's and this was a very solid car. The sheet metal that constitutes the structural part of the car is solid. The car had what I believe to be a dealer applied rust proofing (unless Bertone started doing it, not sure). There are little caps covering the holes where they applied the rust proofing. But it doesn't help the exterior rust, so there is exterior cosmetic rust. When I got it, I removed the rust and painted the areas to keep it from rusting anymore. The mechanicals are very good. I have kept up on them and fixed a number of things. The water pump was replaced and the entire cooling system was flushed and pressure tested. The timing belt was replaced. The accelerator pedal was sticking and has been fixed. Fifth gear selector fork was worn and it would pop out of fifth, it has been replaced and it shifts great. The engine runs great and never needed any work. The brake system has been gone through. A caliper was sticking and has been replaced. The fluid reservoir has been replaced. Brake hoses have been replaced. I did not replace the rotors or pads so they are a little rusty from sitting but work well. I would probably think you would want to replace given it only costs $100 to do them all. I didn't want to replace them just to have them rust since I don't drive it much. It will also need new tires, again I didn't want to replace them since I didn't know how long it would sit, plus you can pick your own brand. The tires on it have tread and will allow you to drive it home, its just that they are dry rotted. The car is inspected and of course runs and drives well. On occasion the starter solinoid doesn't engage first try, I think it is from sitting. It should get a new gear selector seal (probably is hard from sitting, may soften with use, should be able to be replaced with everything in the car). You can keep it just like it is and drive it. But I really think you should finish the restoration. It needs light exterior bodywork and a re-paint. Again this makes sense to do by the final owner as they can decide how perfect they want to make it and what color they want. It is currently black with black/grey interior. It was originally a two tone exterior black and silver. So it has already been painted in the past. The paint on the hood is in bad condition. There are also a rust perforations and surface rust (in areas like lower door jam, rear trunk, lower rear end). All of it is a very easy bodywork. Probably the worst is of course the the rear trunk (lower wells and internal under cover). Again, this is a very solid car, it just doesn't show that well because the worst part of it is the exterior. The interior is complete and in very good condition. The carpet is in really good condition. Electricals all work, include power windows. This has the newer better blade style fuse box. Fuel guage bounces around - sender should be replaced (easy and cheap). AC works! So a lot of things are already sorted out, you just finish it up how you like it. The front grill and spoiler are there!!!! Others on ebay normally don't have them and they are BIG bucks to buy, hundreds of dollars. I think this is easily a $5000-$6000 car with just a little work and repaint (or even $10K if you go all out). I have seen cars sell on ebay that appear to need more work than this sell for a lot more. If it ends up that no one wants to buy it as it is, I will finish it and may either keep it or sell it finished. But really I have no need for more than one X1/9 and I don't have time or space for all the cars anymore. As you can see in the picture, I have another X1/9 and also a Ferrari. You can judge the car by the company it keeps. The car hasn't been sitting in the yard for 20 years, it has been in storage and exercised. That takes time and money to preserve the car. I will not make money on the car, I am just passing it on to someone who will enjoy it. And you will enjoy it. It can out handle just about any car, and for driving around town where you can't go too fast anyway, it is perfect. It is sold as-is, where is. I will work with you in shipping it if you need it shipped (in the USA, that is). Highlights: Only 38K miles. Recent timing belt, water pump, brake work. AC works! Has front spoiler and grill! Very good interior - no wear or rips on seats. On Jul-06-11 at 18:32:11 PDT, seller added the following information: I added some pictures. Some show the undercarriage. That is pretty much how the entire underside is - solid without rust. I added a few pics of some rust perferations. It isn't all of them, but it is a good example of them. The rear trunk lid has a number as you can see in the pics. The one pic is a good example of what is in the door area. The other areas are in the front, right behind the bumper/spoiler ends and in the rear. Again, I think it looks worse than it is and it should be easy to restore.
