Vehicle Detail

It’s the real thing – that original 1000cc R-series Honda crotch rocket that started it all. If you are a collector or enthusiast, you know all about it. If not, do some research and you’ll become a fan. Honda only brought these bikes to the U.S. in 1985 and 1986. This is the dual headlight ’86 version and I am pretty sure it is one of the lowest mileage examples left. Just 8600 miles on this one – that’s an average of 344 miles per year. Yes, you read that right! It is far from perfect but this is a mostly original, unmolested version of the now hard to find VF1000R. These liquid cooled V4s with gear driven double overhead camshafts produced 117 (some say 122) horsepower. Their sound was unmistakable. So was their appearance. I bought it in 2002 as the lowest mileage example I could find (and afford). I had wanted one since the 80's. My intention was to repair the fiberglass (see pictures), repaint it, and have one of the best examples of this bike in the country. The full fairing is real fiberglass, not the plastic you get today, so it’s easy to touch up. Instead, it has sat in my garage with the occasional trip around the block. It starts and runs perfectly, but I admit now that I’m never going to get to it. Please see the pictures. There is road rash on both sides – I didn’t do it! You can see the previous owner put on a Hindle 4 into 1 performance full exhaust system on the bike. A local Honda mechanic told me that would have been a $1500+ project. Personally, I loved the original sound of these bikes from 1985 and 1986 and I do have the original exhaust. I still remember the deep gurgle from these beasts and I would put the original exhaust back on. Although I have to admit, the Hindle does sound nice. You get the Hindle and the original pipes as well. The originals exhaust is scuffed (mostly on the left side) as you will see in the pictures. It’s all here (even the rear seat cover which is usually missing some 25 years later), and it runs great. In addition to the bike as you see in the pictures I also have the original exhaust, a service manual, an owner’s manual, an original Honda sales brochure from 1986 (in great shape - sorry for the reflection on the pictures but it's in great shape with great color), a collection of articles about this bike bound together from Ian Smith (good reading if you like the old sport bikes), a CD that is supposed to have all the part numbers (I’ve never loaded it), a full set of NOS original Honda fasteners for the fairing (the original fasteners are still on the bike), and even an older full face helmet to match. If you do not love these old machines, please do not bid. This needs to go to someone who remembers this classic bike and wants a low mileage example, in mostly original but far from perfect condition VF1000R. Look around. If you find a better example, please buy it.I do reserve the right to sell the bike locally at anytime and cancel this auction. I am not marketing it locally although one local Honda guy knows I have it and has expressed interest. I do have the title in hand. The winning bidder will please send full payment within 7 days of the end of the auction. I will cooperate with the shipper of your choice but I will not be responsible for crating the bike. If you have negative feedback, please do get in touch with me before bidding. On Jun-19-11 at 06:36:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for the interest and all the questions. I've answered many of you on personal responses to your individual questions. Here's a question that keeps coming up, so I'll answer it here: The original exhaust is something I would prefer to keep with the bike. If I end up selling the bike to someone that does not want the exhaust, then I will offer the exhaust to those of you that have asked. However, I expect it will sell with the bike. One other question that keeps coming up I will also answer here. Many of you have asked what my reserve is. While I'm not going to reveal it, it's not high. It will likely be hit when one or two more bidders jump in. We are not far off as it is. If just one of you actually want the bike, we may not hit the reserve. If a couple of you jump in, I suspect we will hit it. Good luck, guys, and thanks for your interest. On Jun-20-11 at 22:52:57 PDT, seller added the following information: Another question that has come up a few times now is whether or not I have an original Comstar front wheel. I do not. This wheel was on the bike when I got it. I think it is either from a '84 or '85 Honda CB700SC or someone thought it was from a VF1000F. I am not sure. The mirrors are also not original. I have seen mirrors and front wheels on ebay and other places but I do not have originals. The low, low reserve has been met. I am hopeful the winning bidder or all serious bidders can come see the bike in person. I have tried to do a good job of representing it here, but if other questions come up, please ask and I will do my best to answer them. Finally, if more detailed pictures are needed of anything, I will try to accommodate so please ask.
