Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is this rare 1971 Dodge Challenger Convertible. One of only 41 factory built with the big block 383 Magnum and 4 speed manual transmission. This car is a nice driver with great potential for a full restoration. We have owned the vehicle for the past 21 years and this is the first time it has been offered for sale. The 1971 model year was the last time convertible E- bodies were built, it was also the last year the 383 was available and the largest engine option for the convertible Challengers (if you wanted the 426 HEMI you would have to opt for the Plymouth 'Cuda). 1971 also was the last year a big block at all was available to sit in the engine compartment of a Challenger or 'Cuda E-body. Some details about this car for sale: Body: Color is B5 blue as original. Older repaint (late 1980s). Has some rust areas and filler in rear wheel wells and lower rocker panels and rust by door jams. A few small dings and scratches. Nice bumpers. Nice grille and tail light panel. Doors open and close well. Hood with scoops was added by past owner as well as rear valance with exhaust tip cut outs. I added used flip fuel cap. Convertible top is rough, older replacement with original back glass. Boot was converted to snaps. Overall a decent looking "20 footer". Under Carriage: Floorboards have some holes, one large one (see photo) under drivers feet area. Small ones under rear seat area. Otherwise typical condition for year. Tires/Wheels: Excellent Goodyear Eagle ST tires I put on in the 1990s (only about 6000 miles) on factory mag wheels. Originally came with wheel covers I believe. Drivetrain: All stock, 383 replacement (1966) block. Not sure which heads. Carter AVS 4 bbl. I added electronic ignition. Stock exhaust, some rust holes in mufflers. Runs well! Original Chrysler transmission (numbers match). Rear axle is 8 3/4 with 3.23 open gears. Interior: Nice black dashboard, Rallye gauges, 150 mph speedo, Tach & clock. Hurst pistol grip shifter (boot tore), console. Cheap replacement carpet. Tears in front seats - drivers back area & pass. seat seam (see photo). Rear panels have rough surface near top and may have been painted. Misc: This Challenger has been a northern Ohio car since purchased new at Funkhouser Motors in Napolean, Oh. Hard to believe it's over 40 years old! Has power steering, power front disc brakes & power top. Has fender tag. Could not find broadcast sheet under seats. Serial number on cowl area matches fender tag and VIN (JH27N1B41****) in dashboard. This is a good running, fun car to drive that turns some heads. Nice ride, smooth brakes. Everything works with the exception of the windshield washer. It has a newer washer motor and I tried replacing the switch but it's still not working. Maybe a wiring problem? Car has a late build date (June) and a high serial number making this one of the last convertible muscle cars to roll out of Chrysler. If you're looking for a classic Mopar to drive and enjoy or plan a restoration, this may be it. I took over 60 photos of this car, but only 24 are shown. If you would like to see others, I can e-mail them upon request. I reserve the right to end this auction early if the car sells locally. I will be happy to answer any questions through e-bay messages. I check them at least twice a day. Thanks for looking. On Jun-13-11 at 18:57:06 PDT, seller added the following information: I added 2 more photos showing rust areas. Passenger side lower quarter panel in front of wheel and spring shackel same side. I don't know how much body work had been done before the 1980s repaint. The quarter panels and rockers obviously had some. On Jun-14-11 at 14:58:20 PDT, seller added the following information: This car is not currently being offered for sale locally. This auction will run through the end and sell to the highest bidder. Thank you.
