It has always been a California van, non-smoking & either garaged or car-ported. This gorgeous Westy has a super-peppy 2.3 L Gowesty Engine with 105HP & 145ft-lbs of torque, & a newly-rebuilt automatic transmission & differential. The more powerful drive train gets the same mileage: 17-19 mpg highway, 15-17 in town and integrates perfectly with the rest of the systems (unlike some other engine replacements). The upgrade from the stock 1.9 L engine makes a huge difference, enabling us to easily flow with traffic, even in the mountains when fully loaded for a week’s camping. All mechanical & body items and systems have been fully maintained, upgraded, & replaced as needed or recommended during the 10 years we’ve had the van, with an eye toward safety & reliability. A recent inspection by Karmakanix found no issues or maintenance needs. Mileage: The chassis has 212k, the engine has 17k (warranty thru 10/2011), the transmission 2k (warranty thru 9/2011). Registration/Smog: Registration good to March 2012, California Smog Certificate good to March 2013. All camper systems are operational. The propane tank & regulator have been replaced, the fridge chills quickly and stays cold on either propane or electric, the stove works perfectly, the auxiliary battery system charges reliably, the cabinets, counter-tops and both tables all are in great condition without scratches or chips (including the dish drainer), the sink & faucet are fully functional, the upper & lower mattresses are in great condition, all screens are in good shape including the snap-on rear hatch “naptime” screen, the new 3-window pop-top canvas allows much more light & fresh air inside, & the pop-top ceiling is clean. All upholstery & interior finishes are in great condition, including the headliner, visors, and side & door panels (see below for driver’s door note). The curtains have an additional layer of fabric for décor & complete privacy/better light blocking. The large front window curtain is included. Also included is the much-sought-after jumpseat. All manuals & maintenance records come with the van; including the original owner’s manuals & a VW Official ‘Bentley’ repair book – the mechanics’ bible. In addition to the recommended oil, fluid & filter changes, regular tune-ups, and the use of ONLY premium gas, Mobil-1 synthetic 15/50 oil, and phosphate-free coolant, the following repairs have been done to keep the van in tip-top shape. All work has been done at Vanagon specialists: Karmakanix, Van-café, Gowesty, and J&J VW. Mechanical: Drive train: Gowesty 2.3L engine, rebuilt torque convertor & differential with new oil cooler & pan, all belts replaced. The engine was installed at 195k, 17,000 miles ago (warranty thru 10/2011). The transaxle & differential were rebuilt at 210k, 2,000 miles ago (warranty thru 9/2011). Suspension/Steering: front suspension upper & lower ball joints, A-arms & bushings, & strut rod bushings; CV joints, brake pads, shoes, rotors & cylinders, rack & pinion steering boots have all been replaced. The Les Schwab 185r-14/8 n810 8-ply LT radial tires (recommended for stability) all have more than 80% tread & come with free flat-repair, road hazard protection, free rebalancing & rotation; brakes have more than 60% remaining on all pads. Electrical: New primary battery in Jan 2011, camper battery in 2006, fuses upgraded to ceramic, starter, alternator, alternator/starter cable, camper battery relay, battery terminals all replaced. Fuel/Ignition System: airmass unit, ignition wires, distributor & rotor, hall sender unit, fuel lines as recommended, catalytic convertor & vacuum line, and oxygen sensor all replaced, exhaust manifold repaired. Cooling & Heating systems: radiator replaced, hoses as needed, ‘H’ pipe replaced, rear heater core replaced, steel cooling lines A-ok; thermostat, water pump, pressure reservoir & sensor, fan switch, and heater control cables all replaced, AC converted to HFC-134a (new standard). Body: New exterior premium paint, Honda’s “Green Tea” with clearcoat in 2009, all dings etc repaired, hand sanded & feathered; replaced pop-top canvas with new 3-window unit, new black steel rear bumper, all new bumper caps, new fog lamps, new propane tank & regulator with protective mudflap, new retractable antenna, reconditioned grilles & vents, reconditioned utility flaps, new driver & passenger door lower window seals, new raingutter trim, new engine compartment seal, new engine mounts, new windshield washer tank, new accessory plug/lighter, new rearview mirror, billet shift lever, Pioneer CD-stereo with Kenwood in-door & rear speakers (& remote), weather station with outside sensor unit, sport wheel covers, dash topper. The body is rust & corrosion-free. Notes: The AC blows but needs charging (we rarely need it). The skylight vent has been removed & replaced with Plexiglas (VW ones almost always leak. New kits are $220 at Gowesty). The pop-top fiberglass was slightly dented on the left side by a repair shop; they fixed it but the mark is visible on the outside. The driver’s door map pocket has been removed; we always kicked it getting out ($40 at Gowesty). The front carpet has some wear but is clean. There is no pump for the camper water tank (we just hook up a hose at campgrounds & water runs fine through the faucet (a pump is $30 at Gowesty). Why are we selling? While we have had many great adventures throughout California, Oregon, & Nevada in ‘Betty’ we want to do more off-road & backcountry 4x4 travel in the desert. She is ready to provide many years of camping and roadtrips to her new owners. As with all used vehicles, no warranties or guarantees other than those listed above are included or implied; vehicle is sold as-isReserve is lower than Buy It Now price
