Vehicle Detail
1968 E-Type Jaguar FHC Series 1½ VIN 1E35116, Numbers match with Jaguar Daimler Heritage (JDHT) cerificate Very Original California Black-Plate Car HISTORY 1E35116 was originally purchased from the Frank Millard Sports Cars, Inc. Jaguar dealership in Los Angeles on 6/19/1968 by George H. Simpson in the name of his company George H. Simpson Mfg. Corp in North Hollywood Ca. Mr. Simpson bought the car new, maintained it meticulously and kept it the rest of his life. I have reasonably determined the car’s location over the past 39 years as the following: · 6/19/1968 - 1998 Los Angeles and vicinity; · OWNERSHIP CHANGE · 1998 - 2005 Las Vegas Nevada (2nd owner); · 2005 - 2010 Dry storage in Vancouver WA vicinity (2nd owner); OWNERSHIP CHANGE · 5/2010 - Present Boulder CO. 1E35116 is a numbers matching (chassis, engine, body, transmission and ignition key) “Black Plate” California registered car (2006 photo prior to new exhaust), and remained as such until it was moved to Oregon and then with Colorado classic registration from May 2010 in my name. The original black plate accompanies the car. Given the location history and conversations with the previous owner I am reasonably certain that the car has been garaged or kept indoors since new. The previous owner kept it in a heated metal building with numerous other interesting classic cars. Given the above, this Jag appears to never have had any rust nor does it appear to have been in an accident beyond a minor ding or two. The Series 1½ 2 seat Fixed Head Coupe is among the rarer of the production E-Types with only1936 being produced during a single year's production (1968), and of these 373 wre RHD, resulting in only 1563 Series 1.5 FHCs having been produced. 1E35116 was driven continuously by Mr. Simpson and has never been off the road with the exception of moderate periods for major maintenance (e.g. clutch, repaint, etc.) Mr. Simpson had the car repainted in its original color in 1988 (20 years old), and it was again repainted in the fall of 2010 in the original color. Beyond the repaints and a new headliner the car is essentially cosmetically original. The previous owner drove it only about 1400 miles over the 13 years he had the car. SERVICE HISTORY 1E35116 is accompanied by an extensive service history, especially during the 1st 19 years while Mr. Simpson owned it, and since I acquired it in 2010. The previous owner had little done to it since it was driven so rarely between 1998 and 2010. While there are a few gaps, the history is very complete, from delivery n on June 19, 1968 to March 2010, and totally complete from then to the present. Extensive maintenance and rebuild was performed on most of the cars mechanical systems over the 39 years. MILEAGE The indicated mileage reading at this writing is 103,220 (but continues to change as it is driven). This is most likely correct given the service history which accompanies the car and the attention to gripes as they occurred over its life. The car has been registered on the road its entire life and with the exception of the 1998-2010 interlude this car has been continuously driven as it is now. ENGINE & CLUTCH 1E35116 is a numbers matching car. The clutch was replaced including resurfacing the flywheel at June 1989 at 82933 miles by Lirones Motorsports in Tujunga CA. The clutch master cylinder was replaced in 1987. The car continually passed strict California emissions through 1998, and whatever emission requirements exist in Oregon through 2010 to have kept it registered. It is currently registered in Colorado with collector plates. It shows no smoke whatsoever from the exhaust, cold, hot, fast, slow or otherwise. The oil pressure is excellent (50+ lbs hot), it is smooth, quiet and about as leak free as is possible for an E-Type. A new stainless steel exhaust system was installed in February 2011, and it purrs beautifully. COOLING SYSTEM All major hoses and all belts were replaced in July 2010. The heater control valve was replaced in 1992. The cooling fans are the factory stock 4 bladed fans as were standard in the Series 1.5 and the Series 2 cars. The car runs within the normal temperature range most of the time, although like many E-Types it becomes a bit challenged in bumper to bumper hot weather. Based on previous experience, I have little doubt that a pair of Cool Cat upgraded fans would resolve any possible issues. The radiator and header tank are in good condition and there are no leaks. The system is fitted as it should be with a blanking cap on the radiator and the 13 lb cap on the overflow tank. GAS TANK & FUEL SYSTEM The gas tank, all fuel lines, fuel gauge and electric fuel pump all function as they should. There is no gas smell as is common with many E-Types. The original Zenith Stromberg Carburetors were rebuilt in 1988 and then again in September 2006. The original spec. fuel pump was last replaced in 1991. The fuel tank was removed repaired and cleaned in 1989. CHARGING SYSTEM The alternator was rebuilt and the voltage regulator was replaced in June, 2010. The system charges flawlessly. The car is fitted with a high end Optima gel battery. IGNITION SYSTEM The distributor cap was last replaced in 1992. the ignition wires were last replaced in 1989 The car runs smoothly without missing a beat. TRANSMISSION & DRIVE TRAIN The drive train functions as it should. The original fully synchronized Jaguar 4 speed transmission is in place. The rear CV joints and the drive shaft U-joints were replaced in 1986 the and transmission rear seal was replaced at that time. BRAKES The brake system was completely replaced (or rebuilt where new parts were unvailable) at an expense of over $4500 in the winter of 2010--2011. All four brake rotors were replaced. New dual pad Wilwood calipers were fitted to the front brakes. The rear Dunlop calipers were completely rebuilt. The brake master cylinder and reaction valve were replaced. The Brake booster and cylinder were replaced. All of the brake lines, junctions and hoses were replaced. A reconditioned emergency brake cylinder was replaced and the other renewed on the rear inboard rotors. All brake pads were replaced at this time. SUSPENSION & STEERING Coordinated with the labor (dropping the rear end) associated with the brake work, the complete suspension was refurbished in late 2010-early 2011. The front upper and lower ball joints were replaced, as were the steering tie rods and rack bellows. Front wheel bearings were renewed and one new stub axle was installedd. New GAZ adjustable shocks replace the original shocks in the front and 4 new Boge shocks were fitted in the rear. All bearings and rubber seals and bushings were replaced including new trailing arm bushings and bolts. The differential was inspected and a new gasket was fitted to the cover A/C The “factory” (actually dealer installed) Delanair air conditioning system is fully installed and electronically functions, engaging the compressor and fan. It is upgraded with a Japanese Sankyo compressor replacing the original York compressor. The Lucas A/C relay has been replaced with a solid state Bosch (I kept the original Lucas). It blew cold when I drove it in Oregon last summer, however a vacuum test check for leaks and charging will be prudent when we get a hot day here, which I hope is very soon. BODY The body is one of the high points of 1E35116. There is no evidence of major accidents or rust beyond a very minor spot on the side of the driver's floor pan. All of the gaps are as nearly perfect as they were when they left the factory. The doors and the rear lid shut easily and correctly. One look at the interior in the rear portion will convince you it has never been apart. There is no evidence of bondo on the underside of the bonnet as is common with most E-types. It is as solid California and dry climate original 43 year old E-Type as one could hope to find. Unlike many"perfect"restored cars with replacement body panels and structural components, this car is as it was produced by Jaguar in 1968. The car was repainted in 1988 in the original color and then again in 2010. The front end was aligned on April 11, 2011(not because of any symptom, but because it hadn't been done sincethe installation of the new Red Line tires about 300 miles earlier in 2010. At that time the technician at the Tire Source in Boulder ( who sees many collector cars) said it was as perfectly straight as he had ever seen an E-Type. GLASS The slightly tinted glass is in excellent condition all of the way around the car. The windows operate easily , including the rear quarter windows. The windshield was last replaced in 1988 SEATS & INTERIOR The original interior in surprisingly good condition, but with a nice patina has survived. The headliner and sun visors, however were tired and drooping and have been replaced using the original specification "Union Cloth" MASTERCRAFT of Arvada CO. The center console is original but a bit challenged. The car comes with a recovering kit for the console, although since the original nature of the interior appeals to many, I thought I'd leave the decsion to fir it or not to the next owner. WHEELS & TIRES The wire chrome wire wheels were in decent condition, however I had a chance to buy four off of a show car (original equipment types), and they are among its subtle upgrades. When I bought the car it had 4 red line Michelins that were purchased in 1986 with nearly new tread, however they had been manufactured in 1983. This led to a tire tread disintegration mishap prior to returning home from Oregon with it that scratched and dinged my rocker (when one tire came apart) leading to its lovely new paint job. The tires now are (4) NEW (less than 500 miles-manufactured in 2010) correct size Red Lines (Michelin no longer makes them, however these are identical to the originals -made by Uniroyal). The car is equipped with 4 new Series one 2 eared knock off spinners. (The federal knock offs and octagon tool are included for masochists). The spare shines and it works fine. CHROME The chrome is in generally very good to excellent condition, about an 8,5 or 9 on a scale of 10. It shines brightly and there are no pits. The right rear bumper was re-chromed in February 2011 due to white spotting. ELECTRICS Well it’s Lucas………… and the harness is original, howeve,r there appear to be few if any electrical gremlins. All of the instruments work (except the clock) Five of the six Lucas relays have been replaced with solid state Bosch relays supplied by Cool Cat (consequently stuff works- and yes I have the old ones). The wipers work fine on both speeds. The horn works but intermittently blows a fuse. The heater motor and A/C fans work as they should. The lights, directional's, brake lights, back up light and interior lights all work as they should. RADIO This Jag is equipped with its original Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio including the owners manual. This is unusual as most have been through the series of radio changes as technology changed. ORIGINAL MANUALS AND DOCUMENTS 1E35116 comes with the original owners manual, maintenance book, factory warranty card, lubrication diagram and guide to Jaguar dealers. All are in remarkably good condition.
