Vehicle Detail
1962 Tri Carb Austin Healey 3000 Mark II with center shift transmission. OVERVIEW This 1962 Tri Carb big Healey is a great car. It is mechanically in great shape, is driven regularly looks good. It is a solid dry climate car, from the California central valley for at least 15-20 years prior to moving to Colorado. It's a great driver, tidy but not flashy. Investment in a good paint job and a new factory spec interior would lift this to the top level. It's already great under the skin. HISTORY HBT7L16516 is a 1962 Tri Carb Austin Healey 3000 Mark II with center shift transmission. The tri carb cars, produced only with the 1961-62 Mark II cars delivers 132 bhp as opposed to 124 bhp for the twin carburetor cars. This car was previously owned in the same family for approximately 20 years in the Central Valley of California. Consequently the car is extremely solid. It was used on a daily basis by the previous owner as it was her only car. Consequently it has been regularly well maintained. SERVICE HISTORY Service records dating back to August 2003 accompany the car. During the intervening period extensive professional work has been performed on the vehicle. MILEAGE The indicated mileage reading at this writing is 92806. Whether or not this is the correct mileage is unknown. The speedometer, odometer and trip odometer are working correctly and there is no indication of odometer/speedometer repair over the last eight years. In 2003 according to service records, the odometer read 89823. Therefore there are all possibilities on a car of this age including inoperative speedometer for a period, speedometer replacement, or actual mileage (92806, 192806, etc.) That being said the car does not have the loose feeling of a super high mileage car, on the contrary, it is extremely tight (which could also be due to prudent maintenance) ENGINE The engine starts quickly at the touch of the button, cold(choked) or hot. It runs smoothly and revs out easily through the gears. It holds 50-60 lbs of oil pressure (hot) and runs in the normal temperature range between 1600F and 1900F. Once warm, it idles comfortably at about 700 RPM. The engine compartment stays clean and the leaks are about normal for a nearly 50 year old Healey. 3000 miles and 5½ years ago (2005), the fuels lines and fuel filters were changed, a major tune-up was performed, the thermostat and both radiator hoses were replaced and the fan belt was changed. Exhaust downpipes were replaced The car received a major tune in 2009 including rebuild of distributor. CLUTCH The clutch is positive and strong, and functions as it should. The clutch master was rebuilt and the slave cylinder was replaced in 2005 (3000 miles ago). COOLING SYSTEM The cooling system functions as it should. Radiator hoses were replaced in 2005. The system does not leak GAS TANK & FUEL SYSTEM The gas tank with new pad & gasket, all fuel lines, fuel gauge and (new Lucas) electric fuel pump were replaced, including new banjo bolts & union, fuel lines. The carburetors were dismantled, cleaned and adjusted with new needles and seats fitted (2005,2009 & 2010). All fuel filters, fuel lines and fuel line endshave been replaced. CHARGING SYSTEM The charging system functions as it should. The battery is 3 year old Sears Die Hard. TRANSMISSION, OVERDRIVE & DRIVE TRAIN The center shift transmission shifts flawlessly. The synchros are smooth, the ratios are appropriate and it is delight after having owned a side shift car The overdrive works although at times it is sluggish about engaging after the switch is flicked. The drive train functions as it should. There is an occasional intermittent light click upon shifting or hitting a bump. It seems similar to a problem with a previous Healey I had with which the noise was rectified by changing the left rear wheel hub (worn splines). It does not affect the current drivability of the car since it is intermittent. SUSPENSION & STEERING The suspension was completely rebuilt 3000 miles ago including new King Pins, A-arm bushings, front shock mount plates and rebound buffers, bearings oil seals. Shims were adjusted. The steering is tight and does not wander. BRAKES The brake system was completely gone through 3000 miles ago, including a new master cylinder, rebuilding of front calipers and rear wheel cyinders, front disc pads, rear brake shoes, and brake shims. BODY The body is one of the high points of HBT7L16516. The body structure is rock solid bearing witness to its time in dry climates. The car was originally primrose (yellow) in color, and it apparently was never undercoated thus enabling examination of its solid condition. The frame, floors, sills and body are virtually rust free. The only exception is that there is evidence of rust repair (with welded steel repair panels, not bondo) in the lower few inches of the dirt and moisture collecting pockets in the rear fenders just forward of the rear wheel. There is also a small nickel size break in the battery support structure (see photos on link). The body is extremely straight aside from a few very small dings (also in link photos) PAINT, CHROME and EXTERIOR The paint is tired and not-so-good, although it still looks quite good as a 10 footer, and is perfectly fine as a driver. There are some bubbles on the left rear fender. These are not rust bubbles, but instead are the result of poor preparation way back when. Originally yellow it was converted to silver. The chrome is generally good with some exceptions. The rear bumper and over-riders are new. The front bumper should be changed or re-chromed. When I tried to order one from MOSS they were backordered. The windshield and grill area chrome are all good. There is very minor pitting on the door handles and the trunk hinges. The AMCO luggage rack is in excellent condition. The chrome wire wheels are about an 8 on a scale of 10 and look great. GLASS The only glass on the car is the windshield and it is in excellent condition. SEATS & INTERIOR Older aftermarket vinyl seats and upholstery are in the car. With the exception of a small patch on the drivers left bolster they are generally in good shape. New aftermarket carpets were installed in January of 2009 and are in good condition. The vinyl on the dash is serviceable condition, however it will be a candidate for replacement. TONNEAU, SIDE CURTAINS AND TOP The car has a near new (see photos) factory specification tonneau, with new support bars and steel inserts. The side curtains are in excellent condition with little or no fogging on the Plexiglas. The top is complete with the frame, bow and latches in excellent condition. The top itself, while not ragged, has shrunk a bit making it difficult to fit in place. The crushed vinyl original spec tops can be found ranging from $250 and up in price, usually less than the cost of the tonneau which comes with this car. WHEELS & TIRES The chrome wire wheels are in good to very good condition, and when clean sparkle brightly. The tires were new in March 2010, with 2010 DOT manufacture dates. ELECTRICS Well it’s Lucas………… and for the moment everything works, all of the instruments work as do the wipers, lights, directional's, brake lights and horn. This is stated with the caveat that it is Lucas, so let's hope tomorrow is the same.
