For sale: Rare and collectible 1984 Mercedes Benz 280 TE with a 123 Euro Estate wagon body. 5 speed manual transmission with strong and reliable inline 6 cylinder gas engine. I have happily owned this car since March of 2009 but the driving position is not right for my body lately and I need the upright position of a van, so goodbye Benz. The other reason for letting it go is that our home does not have a garage and as you can see from the photos, there are spots of surface rust showing up at the usual places. Before I purchased it, this car was entirely garage kept and is still in very good shape if properly taken care of. It deserves a good home. Clear title. There has been extensive work done over the years and it comes with all known maintenance records from 1991 on. I have a PDF file that can be emailed and will list the major work below: -- new shocks at 100K, 1996-- new muffler ad cat conv, clutch slave and all radiator hoses at 132K, 1997-- In Oct 1998 at 134K on the OD, the owner at the time (who is a Mercedes Mechanic at the top Benz shop in Milwaukee) dropped an exhaust valve and blew the engine in Buffalo, WY. It was a total loss and the only original part left from that engine is the oil pan. He replaced it with a new long block, water pump, fan, clutch and complete over the top rebuild which he claims resulted in a better, more powerful engine that would max out at 135 on the highway in 4th. (5th is a higher gear ratio and thus a slower max speed). -- major A/C overhaul in 2003 at 164K-- converted rear suspension to springs in 2004 at 168K and replaced transmission seals-- current tires should be replaced, they date back to 2007-- new radiator, aux heater pump and fan belts at 180K in 2008-- new clutch slave and master cylinder at 188K in 2009-- front wiper bearing and linkage was repaired in 2010-- new starter, distributor cap, plugs and wires in Sept 2010 at 196K along with the most recent oil change So even though this wagon is 26 years old, it has been well maintained and upgraded and has a lot of life left. The underbody is solid with no obvious rust problems. The current surface rust (no serious cancer yet) should be easily taken care of by new owner and then with a new paint job it will look fantastic. There is a Becker receiver/cd player paired with an amp under the rear bench seat and works fine. The folding rear facing seat is fully functional too, complete with shoulder harnesses for your little ones. Now for the current known issues: 1) needs new tires soon2) needs some exhaust work -- rusting out just in front of the catalytic converter but as far as I can tell, the rest of the exhaust looks servicable still3) AC belt is missing, AC needs recharging too4) linkage at 2nd gear needs to be adjusted -- the engine needs to warm up before it will shift into 2nd easily. I either run it for 5 minutes or just skip 2nd for the first couple shifts, there is plenty of power so the car doesn't seem to mind going from 1st to 3rd at first. 5) Drain lines for the sunroof need to either be fully cleaned or worked on, water sometimes accumulates on the floorboards after a rain. 6) drivers seat has a split -- a new seat cover comes with the sale of the vehicle7) emergency brake does not work8) rear passenger side tail light lens is broken, currently fully functional with red plastic tape (see pic) I have a clear WI title. The VIN does not show up in eBay data base given that is was originally from Brazil, thus the eBay system will not allow me to include the VIN and it is listed as 1980 instead of the actual 1984.
