Vehicle Detail
Hi all. Up for sale is my 2002 Jaguar X308 XJ8 Sport of "XJ Sport." I bought this car back in November 2010 and has become too much of a burden for me. Long story short and quite honestly, both the transmission and engine have failed during my ownership and I can no longer afford to keep it running. This was just a case of terrible luck. I know this isn't promising for any prospective buyers, but ones who usually look into buying this car know what they are getting into and I'm selling this car for parts or restoration. I bought this car through eBay, listed as a private auction. I had the car inspected at The Great Britain's Jaguar in Willow Grove, PA. Everything checked out. I have this record on file and will be provided in the sale. Basically there was no reason for me to second guess this car. A clean and consistent CarFax was provided and will be provided upon request. The car was originally bought in Manhattan and owned for 3 years, typical for a lease. It was then selected to be a Jaguar Select Certified Pre-Owned car (Also have that for records) and was serviced then sold by Cherry Hill Classic Motors in Cherry Hill, NJ, where it was owned by someone in Philadelphia for about 5 years and serviced at Land Rover Main Line in Wayne, PA for the remainder of that ownership. It was then bought by me with 96k miles on it. The transmission was replaced at 98k miles by a very good local shop that sourced a Jasper rebuilt ZF 5HP24 complete with a new torque converter and a 3 year/100,000 Mile FULLY TRANSFERABLE warranty that will cover tow, labor, and all parts and fluids. That cost me $5200. Not too shortly after at 102k miles, I develop a rod knock in the engine and confirmed the rod knock with an inspection of one of the biggest problem spots for these cars, the V8 Timing Chain Tensioners. They turned out to be ok so I am sure I have a bottom end knock. That said, this car does need a new engine and I am not able to afford it. If you are a wrench head, I sourced a fully reconditioned long-block V8 complete with all new timing chain updates, valve covers, heads, a new water pump and all gaskets for $2300 off of eBay. Nearly everything needed to make that long block complete can be used from my engine to be put on the reconditioned long block except for the knock sensor, which is $60 from an online parts store, that gets temperamental in warmer weather and can put the car in RESTRICTION PERFORMANCE mode. There were no other problems with the engine so the throttle body is 100% ok. Cause of the engine rod failure can only be guessed that one of the previous owners ran the engine on low oil at some point for some time. All-in-all, it's just a serious case of bad luck with this car and with the new transmission in it, if someone puts a new engine in this car they will virtually have a brand new car. Also purchased during my ownership are four brand spankin' new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus Performance All-Seasons from Costco (The best and most expensive road tire for this car) for $1400 in January, and have documentation for that. I also have two spare regular Michelin Pilot Sport Plus Summer Performance tires with about 90% tread left on them, probably worth around $600. As you can see in the pictures, this car is otherwise VERY immaculate. The only paint imperfection is oxidization of the clearcoat on a section of the hood that is only noticeable from a close distance. Otherwise the rest is normal wear from road rash of 100k+ miles. Either way, this car is CLEAN and I made sure to keep it that way. I am pretty sure my family was the first to sit in the back seat. Additionally, there are one or two interior faults, all of which are expected from these cars: The driver side seat heater is not working, most likely from a broken wire connector leading to the thermostat, which is a very easy fix. The headliner is slightly sagging in the rear, also very expected. One of the backlights for the digital temperature display is out but the other one does fine to keep it visible at night. There's a crack in the wood on the driver side panel, probably from the previous owner accidentally slapping the seat belt on it, and some hairline cracks on the dash wood, but very unnoticeable unless you look for them. Again, all very common for these cars. There are no rips or tears in the leather, and all of the electronics work, and the Alpine stereo still sounds great. Everything else works. It's just really freakin' s*cks that I've had such bad luck with this car because even the folks at JaguarForums.com, the largest online community for Jag owners, were confused and spooked by my car's bad luck. And it just so happens the only two truly major problem spots for these cars came up in just such a short time of me owning the car. I already fixed one, and again the transmission comes with a FULLY TRANSFERABLE 3-YEAR/100,000 MILE WARRANTY, by Jasper Transmissions, the largest rebuilder for transmissions and engines of all kinds. It covers parts, labor, fluids and gaskets including tow and you can have it fixed where ever you desire and Jasper will cover. The only other problem spot is with the engine and once replaced, this will basically be a new car. with little to go wrong. The electronics ARE NOT made from LUCAS which made Jaguar notoriously unreliable, they are made by DENSO which are also found in Hondas and Toyotas and are subsidiary to Toyota, so they are bulletproof. Other maintenance issues such as the suspension control arm bushings, which are known to go around this mileage, were already replaced after visual inspection from a Jaguar shop. And that's a $1500+ job. To put this into perspective for the buyer: My selling price, starting bid: $2499 New engine from source: $2200 + 1 year/Unlimited Mileage Buffer for extra parts and labor: $2000 Grand Total: $6700 + 3 Year/100,000 Mile warranty for the transmission + 1 year/Unlimited Mileage for new engine Blue Book Value of car in Excellent condition with this mileage and warranty: $10,512 Even if one were to sell it for parts: Transmission with fully transferable warranty: Can be sold for around $2600 Wheels + tires combination: Can be sold for at least $1500 All other parts on this car are in great condition and can be sold for profit. My Bill for the car: -Bought for $8000 -Replaced Transmission for $5200 Total: $13,200. So whoever decides to embark on fixing this car up, you will no doubt come up on top over me. I simply do not have the funds or time to dedicate to this car any more (And I am a fairly experienced DIYer) and I was not expecting either of these issues with this car to pop up because an entire community of Jaguar XJ X308 Owners are extremely happy with their cars, which is what influenced me to buy one. And I absolutely love mine, except I will have to cut this one short. Sorry for the book, but I did it to show that I'm not here to BS. I am very much a car enthusiast and hope that someone can rescue this poor cat. Any questions, feel free to shoot me an email and I will try and answer to the best of my knowledge. Buyer is responsible for pickup of the vehicle. Here are the pics. I do realize I need to upload interior pics. I will do that within the next couple days: On Mar-30-11 at 15:49:16 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE: Here are the interior pictures
