Vehicle Detail
This car was part of the fleet at Classic Car Club Manhattan. We are a private members' club where members join the club and drive our cars. Our members care for the cars as if they were their own, we are not a rental company and only our limited group of members drive our cars. We also employ a full-time staff of mechanics to check up on the cars and ensure that they remain in top mechanical condition. All cars are checked and fluids are leveled every time they go out with a member. This car is listed locally and reserve the right to end the auction early for a local sale. Finally got a bit of good weather and the roads are snow and salt free, so I shot some videos to de-mistify some of the questions about the car and show it in action. This is a no reserve auction, if it doesn't sell this time around, I'm taking it off the market until spring when the market picks up. Bid now if you want a great deal on the car, my asking price will go back up with the warm weather! I bought the car last fall from a retired mechanical engineer in eastern Pennsylvania who did the S14/5-speed drivetrain swap in his garage after completing a top-quality, bare metal re-spray in the car's original Malaga red color. He said that after the drivetrain swap was complete, his wife wouldn't ride in the car with him anymore since it was too loud! He also wanted to make room in the garage for a pickup truck hot rod that he was hoping to get of eBay. The drivetrain swap is well done, albeit a bit home crafted. The car is fast! Speed per age, I'd imagine it's one of the fastest cars I've driven. It's a sleeper now and it was even more of a sleeper when I first got it with 14" bottlecap wheels and stock springs! Since owning it, I've addressed a few suspension maintenance issues, added a set of 15" Alpina replica wheels, Ireland Engineering Stage I lowering springs and a rebuilt LSD to get the car handling and looking good without losing it's traditional feel and great highway ride. It has a great exhaust note and makes an unexpected sound from a clean traditional looking 2002 We do drive the car, so it's not concours, but a bit of detailing it easily could be. I've listed this car at a fixed price for the past month or so, but with winter here, I am a bit more anxious to make some room in the shop. I've lowered the reserve, bid now if you want to own this sweet M2! I can also say, having driven this car more again recently, that it is an absolute hoot to drive. It puts a smile on your face every time you turn the key! Here are the details: BodyRust free body, with beautiful Malaga Red paint. Paint is excellent quality, shines and even feels great. There is a chip in the roof and one slight impression in one of the rear fenders where we had to widen the arches for the larger tires (all shown in the pictures). There are also a few nicks in the chrome, but nothing that detracts from it's overall look. All rubber seals are fresh and with the windows up there is virtually no whistling while driving down the highway. Grilles are in good shape, with only minor scratches, bumper chrome is excellent. DrivetrainChipped, 2.3L S14 (from E30 M3) with an open intake and exhaust estimated to be 200HP+. 5-Speed Gearbox. 3:91 LSD, bought freshly rebuilt from Aardvark racing. The engine was believed to have 60K miles on it before the conversion and has probably done 8-10K miles since then. While it does have some minor oil leaks that are characteristic to the S14 motor, it's only a drop or two and nothing major. (read more about S14 oil leaks here, about 1/2 way down the page is a good description of what these motors are prone to ) With the S14, this car really moves and with it's original styling it always catches people off guard as it blasts away from a stoplight. With electronic fuel injection the car also runs smooth and reliably, I'd be comfortable driving it anywhere. Suspension and SteeringUpgraded sway bar and poly bushings. Ireland Engineering Stage I Sport Springs and Bilsteins Sport Shocks, brakes recently serviced with new shoes, front rotors, pads and calipers. Handling is competent and predictable without sacrificing highway ride. 15"x6" Alpina replica wheels with new 195/50/15 Kuhmo Tires. No rattles what so-ever, the car feels very tight and fresh. InteriorClean and original Tabacco / Black interior with Coco Matts and Nardi Wood steering wheel. Early, nearly crack-free dash (just two cracks near fasten seatbelt sign). Some of the foil has peeled on the door panels, but overall the interior looks great. Added oil pressure and volt gauges to center console. ElectricsWith the exception of the odometer, and the dash indicator for the turn signals, everything works! For some reason the odometer has gone completely random... it still turns, but each digit has a mind of it's own. I recently got in touch with the previous owner for a recap of what he did in terms of reconditioning the body and the drivetrain swap. Read below for his description:"The car was stripped and repainted and the front fenders were replaced about 10 years ago and the rest of car was restored with new front end parts, Bilsteins, 5 speed etc . at the same time. I replaced everything that I could get my hands on . Every piece of trim but a couple were replaced. I wanted to make the switch when I saw on done by a guy in NJ. He sold his for $40K and it wasn’t even a tii and had no trick suspension or big brakes. He is a big name in BMW racing. There was nothing at all wrong with the [original tii] motor. It was low mileage. I sold it to a friend of mine who deals in 2002 parts for $500 and he turned right around and sold it for $1000. I had pictures of all that even the guy coming to pick it up. He drove down from Connecticut. Eight years ago I purchased a M3 with 60K miles from a junkie in Kansas. The motor was great it had original compression but not all the parts, it was missing air flow meter, computer, wiring harness, flywheel and clutch and bell housing which I picked up at various places. I strengthened the front mounts to take care of the greater torque with bigger brakes front and back and a 320i differential. That is about it except all the work it was to make the switch since I had no help it took about 3 months with me working on it almost every day. The wiring was the hardest to figure out and I had to ask around to get it straight. I’m sorry to see you let it go so soon. I put less than a 2 thousand miles on it since I had it for 14 years." I have done my best to honestly describe this car's condition, however, I strongly recommend you inspect it yourself or arrange for a third party to inspect it before purchasing. I will not take responsibility for any misinterpretation of this listing. This a 38 year-old vehicle and it is not perfect. Old cars are old cars and they are not as reliable as modern vehicles. It's also possible I've overlooked something when writing this listing or there are issues with the car that I accept as quirks of owing an older vehicle that I've failed to list. I have owned nearly 100 cars in the past five years and rarely have I bought an old car and not had to immediately do some work to make it suit my needs. If you are not prepared to accept some imperfections and do a little work, then you should not purchase an old car. I don't mean to discourage buyers, but owning an old car is a labor of love. Classic Car owners put their own blood, sweat, tears and money into making their cars what they are which is why they stand so proudly next to their cars at car shows, showing off the result of their hard work. If you want a car that's easy, get a new car on lease with a warranty and let the dealer handle the problems!
