Vehicle Detail
Every truck has a story, and Charlie is no different. I bought Charlie in 2006. Charlie was hard working and dependable, and I wore a set of tires completely out with random running around, hauling for myself and friends, goofing off, etc. etc. He's been a good truck. Then things changed. I enrolled in grad school in 2007, and a year into it Charlie overheated and cracked a head, putting water into the oil. At this point, I should have put him out to pasture, but no, you don't put old friends out to pasture right? So, I decided to sink some money into him and change out the v-6 engine he had for a v-8. I shopped around and found a 4 bolt main 350 block out of a 1993 Suburban. I had this block reconditioned at a local machine shop, had it bored .030" over, bought all new pistons, rings, water pump, alternator, oil pump, distributor, plugs, wires, clutch, radiator, etc. etc. After a year of kicking around the project at my brother's place, we finally got Charlie together again. He started and ran great. And then Charlie let me know how he felt about being neglected for a year with his parts strewn over my brother's yard. He leaked oil. He leaked a lot of oil. He leaked enough oil to make him smoke while driving down the road. I looked on the back of the dripping oil motor, and couldn't tell where it was coming from. Did I mention he leaks oil? He is drivable, but you have to stop every 40 to 50 miles and put a quart in him. Living in an apartment complex away from my brother, who is busy supporting his family and without time to help me work on Charlie, I simply don't have the resources/ability to diagnose where the oil is coming from. I no longer drive Charlie, and he's been sitting in the parking lot for close to 2 years. I do occasionally (every six months or so) fire him up and drive him 4 or 5 miles to make sure he's still operating. I've sunk so much money into him that I turn a bit green in the gills thinking about it, and so I'm deciding to find him a good home where someone who likes to tinker can give him the attention he deserves. That being said, he'll make someone a great first car/fixer up project. The body is fairly straight for an '89. The previous owner put fresh paint on him just before I bought him. The cab has rust spots just to the rear of the doors. The clutch has less than 5k miles on it and is strong. The tires have a little less than 50% tread, and should be good for several thousand more miles, although the right rear and the front left have slow leaks that go down over a few days. Be sure to check out my YouTube video of Charlie, and be sure to ask any questions that I may have neglected to cover. If you're in the area, I welcome an inspection before the auction is over. SOLD AS IS WITH NO GUARANTEES. Thanks for looking, and happy bidding!
