Vehicle Detail
1986 Audi 5000 S - non quatro and non turbo- these are the reliable ones !!!I am the second owner of this great car. I bought it in October 2000 from my Doctoral advisor during my period at Notre Dame and took care of this vehicle all the time with new parts and work done in professional shops. At the time I bought it the tile was marked mileage exempt because it was over 10 yrs old. The actual mileage at that time was 93,xxx miles. It has about 99k miles now, the odometer stopped counting accurately at 95k and works intermittently. The car has to be sold as mileage exempt. We bought another car immediately after and kept this one as a classic with Sunday drives. Always garaged and protected. The original owner went to Germany and brought it over here through Putnam Imports in Elkhart in 1986. The front license plate is the original plate it had in Germany with temporary admission. It drives and rides very well. The transmission shifts like butter ( new master and slave cylinders) - original clutch- absolutely a pleasure to drive. The suspension is very good, steering super tight ( new steering rack last year), drives straight like an arrow. The tires have about 6000 miles on them - Goodyears - paint is still shiny , very little oxidation - see video.I kept it garaged all this time, look at the body of this beauty!!We are non-smokers and have no pets. The smell inside this car is great, the leather still has that particular German smell that you get in Mercedes and Audi's of the late 80's and 90's.The front seats have some seams that came undone so we put new covers on them. Look great. The seat heaters worked last winter but when we tried them the other day, could not feel the heat. Could be a fuse or the elements. The A/C was ok in the summer but could be better. Wanted to take it in to get it recharged but ran out of time and the cold weather came. The new owner will get the 2 cans of A/C recharge oil and cooling agent to do it in the summer. The hand/emergency brake needs to be worked on if you feel you need it.All the glass is good, the electric windows work, electric locks work fineThe car was built without the warm-up regulator by the factory - when cold it runs a bit rough until warm - after a couple minutes- smooth and powerful. This car got me about 21-22 mpg in the city and 28-29 mpg highway. It all depends, however, how heavy your foot is....The cruise worked last fall when I drove it and now it is erratic. May be a vacuum leak or something else. I didn't use it much however. Could be from not being used enough....Here are the things have been done recently:- new hydraulic lifters - changed per manual recommendation- new water pump- new timing belt- new power steering pump - leaking and had it rebuilt- new fuel pump- new blower motor- new tires about 6000 miles ago- new fuel distributor - very expensive- new wheel bearings - front and rear- new brake pads about 4000 miles ago- new steering rack - last summer- new full throttle position sensor - expensive labor to do it....- fresh tune-up- wires, plugs, filters, distributor cap- about 4500 miles ago- new shifter linkage fork and knuckle This is not a new car but I have put over $5000 in parts and labor in it recently alone.....We have 2 other cars, I need the room in the garage and it is a pity for such a fine specimen of German engineering to be sitting and not be driven as it should. The asking price is fair given the condition of the car, updates and upgrades. The car is original and a blast to drive.I would consider it to be reliable and a good value. The video we posted on Youtube shows the car with engine cold, the idle is a bit rough. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk9ddrdTUzk As with any used vehicle, it is sold as is and where is, with no warrantied expressed nor implied. Sections with spare parts and manuals will be added soon. Please make your arrangements for shipping. I can assist with your shipper or when you come to get it. We can discuss. You are welcome to bring your mechanic at my place to check the car out. I feel this is a good car and should go to an enthusiast to be enjoyed. Payment is due in cash. If you decide you want to send a Cashiers Check it must clear first and we have a 4 business day wait period unless we can go to the bank during business hours to check it out. There has been a rush of fake Cashiers Checks made on laser printers.....We will go to the bank with the cash as well. Good luck !! Added 11/29 to answer a question: I have the following manuals: Haynes and Etzold. The last one is in German. It has nice diagrams, including electric. I do not have the Bentley manuals.
