Vehicle Detail
Here we have a 1980 mercedes 300D. This car has 174,000 miles on it, I bought this car for my wife a few years ago and did a pretty extensive mechanicle rehab on it and we drove it and used it as our family car for that time. During our ownership it was a great car for us, we took it on all our family vacations to cape cod, main and canada and it was always a real pleasure machine on the highway, fast, smooth, roomy, comfy and good MPG's, everything you want out of an old Benz. In town however it always left a little to be desired, the car is sluggish up hills and takes her time getting up to speed but that is what old big desils are like. The interior is also in great shape, the wood grain is still shiney, carpets are nice, leather seats are not cracked and still springy and I can sit in them all day long with out fatigue, and the car still has the original medical kit in the back which I thought was cool when I bought it. We are selling because we just bought a new VW GTI Desil and no longer have a need for this one. I thought about making it into a veggi car but instead I am leaving that option to the next caretaker of this vehicle. The Good ( what we put into the car) new winter studded snow tires and new summer tires ( at least a $1,000 value, tires still measure as new 10/32 out of 11/32) Two new Fenders, New exhaust, rear brakes (front brakes have about 50% pad life left), front shocks, new belts, new inner and outer tie rods, Fully rebuilt transmission courtesy of Jager imports an industry leader in these old cars, air cleaner, oil, filter, fuel filter, new battery in 09, radiator flush, thermostat, heat blower motor, and a good used vacuum heat servo unit, plus some new hoses and vacuum lines and switches that you need to get little things to work like the dash light and to make leaks stop and things like that. The Bad (what you will be dealing with as the potential owner of the car) There is rust on this car. the car is great looking but when you get up close you can see it creeping in, the driver side door is the wost, where it has acutally eaten through, I would recomend finding a good used door and just replacing it or doing some repair with rivits or fiberglass. Other wise the car should hold up for a long time but if you need it to be perfict, a little bit of body work and a new paint job and the car would be a real gem! Also, recently a vacuum leak has developed and a lock does not lock and a window struggles to close. A good problem solver should be able to handle this as there is loads of internet help on tracing down vacuum leaks in these old cars or a decent mechanic should be a ble to button this up with out to much trouble. I think that is pretty much it, I had the car in the shop this weekend and we put the snow tires on it, The car passes VT Inspection, and would make a great winter car or 4 season and just drive it as is, or make it into a veggi oil car as that is pretty popular with these. Either way the buyer should understand that althought this car has been really well cared for it is still a 30 year old machine and I would recemend the new owner be handy with tools or know somebody that is because these old cars are lot of fun to drive own but do require more manainence than a new car. thanks for looking The car can be seen at The Daily Rider in Burlington vt, please e-mail with questions
