Rare 1990 VW Vanagon GL Westfalia Camper Only 110,450 original miles 1990 and 1991 were the final production years for the Westfalia and are considered by many to be the best years in terms of engineering design, manufacturing quality, reliability and performance. Please read description, view pictures and ask any questions BEFORE bidding.Second owner. Purchased in 1999 at 97,613 from original owner, who used it for over-highway commuting only; no camping. Driven/garaged since in Maryland. Carefully maintained mechanically by both owners. Fantastic condition with many new parts. Runs, drives, accelerates, shifts (automatic transmission) and brakes very well. Original VW factory engine in excellent condition. Maintenance history includes:. Documented rear wheel bearing replacement at 45K by VW dealer.Documented transmission overhaul at 56K by VW dealer.Documented top end rebuild at 69K by VW dealer (cylinder heads, head gasket, water pump, etc.) Documented steering rack replacement at 77K by VW dealer.Documented air conditioning upgrade to R134 by AC specialist at 97K.Documented thermostat replacement at 100K by VW specialist.Documented distributor cap, spark plugs & wires, ignition rotor replacement at 108K by VW specialist. Documented A/C belt replacement 107K.Documented rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders, and alternator belt replaced at 109K.Power windows, power side mirrors, and power door locks work well. Cruise control doesn't work.Brand new tires on rear (drive) axle. Front tires have 13K on them.Original equipment alloy wheels, including on spare. Tire chains for snow included.Body in generally great condition and looks sharp. Small amount of light surface seam rust or bubbling (no holes or anything close) in several spots (see photos). Also a larger spot, surface only, on left rear fender (photo). One miniature ding on right front door, center bottom (see photo). Also one white scuff immediately aft of sliding door; paint intact, no dent or rust (photo). Undercarriage appears to be in great shape. If I were keeping vehicle, would repaint to change from good-looking to gorgeous. Written estimate of $1250 (11/05/10) from Maaco to remove all rust and door ding, and repaint and clearcoat same color with mid-range paint and grill/bumpers in original black.Poptop works fine. Canvas new in August '10. Upgraded to top-of-line 3-window version from JustKampers in England. Skylight new in October '10. Original skylight screen and curtain included.All camping equipment works. Stove is 2-burner LP. Refrigerator works on LP, battery, or AC (extension cord included). Sink, water tank and pump are immaculate, and key included for water tank lock. Long hose for external water hook-up included, appears unused. LP tank full. Two original tables in great shape, can be raised, swiveled or removed. Front seats swivel to face rear.Interior extremely clean; like new in many places. Upholstery in perfect condition except for small hole at top edge of rear seat - see photo. Top and bottom beds immaculate, foam and covers perfect. All curtains in place and perfect condition. Flocked ceiling very clean. Front and rear (removable) carpet in good condition. Rubber flooring in rear in great shape. Standard floor mats in front, may be original.Factory Heidelberg radio works but not cassette. Antenna mast broken off. LCD dash clock keeps accurate time works but display is bad. Cigarette lighter: hand-held unit failed but underlying circuit tests good.New rear hatch struts/supports (hold it open) installed October '10. Q The vehicle report shows this van as a Synchro which was a four wheel drive version? Is this true? How is the water pump and holding tank? Have you ever used it camping? ANot a Synchro. All of these models show up that way on the eBay Vehicle Report. It's an either or thing, the way they list it on that report: Vanagon GL / GL Synchro. Mine's not the Synchro. The water holding tank is clean and intact, and the water pump works fine. I inadvertantly tested it a few weeks ago when messing around with the sink. I kept hearing this light whirring sound afterward, which was driving me crazy to locate, until I realized it was the pump in action because the faucet had been left on. I have used it camping, but not often because I usually had a water hook-up available, with its own pressure, and just preferred the hose connection route because then I didn't have to drain the water tank later. I guess I was always kind of miserly about fuel economy in terms of keeping the vehicle weight down
