The Grand National was produced from 1982 to 1987 in limited numbers. The Regal's lifespan stretched from 1973 to 2004. The 1984 and later Grand Nationals were immensely popular for its all-black paint scheme and made their debut at the height of the "Star Wars" film series and the Darth Vader look.BackgroundThe Buick Regal was a personal luxurycar developed as an answer to the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. The Regal was equipped with a luxury interior featuring cloth, vinyl or velor upholstery, bucket or bench seats and usually a 350-cubic-inch V-8.Grand National DebutThe 1982 Buick Grand National In 1982, Buick honored the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR, with its Buick Grand National, named for the Grand National stock car racing series founded in 1950 and continuing today. The Grand National car was equipped with either a 3.8- or 4.1-liter V-6 engine. The 4.6 version generated 175 horsepower and 205 foot-pounds of torque. A 175-horsepower turbocharged version was offered as an option, but only 215 Grand Nationals were produced and few were turbocharged.SpecificationsThe Grand National's turbocharged V-6 engine The Grand National accommodates four people, sits on a 108.1-inch wheel base and measures 200.7 inches long. It is 71.6 inches wide and stands 54.6 inches tall. By 1985, a turbocharged 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 was standard equipment.All BlackThe 1984 to 1987 Buick Grand Nationals were painted all black The Grand National was not offered for the 1983 model year, but returned in 1984 with a black paint scheme and the optional turbocharged V-6. In all, 5,204 Regal turbocharged versions were sold with 2,000 being Grand Nationals. Production of the Grand National rose slightly in 1985 with 2,101 units. And 5,512 were produced in 1986.Days DwindlingThe Grand National's engine was modified slightly in 1986 to accommodate an intercooling system that enhanced the turbo V-6's performance to 245 horsepower. But by 1987, Buick was the last of General Motors' rear-drive cars. Plans were made for 1988 to switch all Buicks to front-drive. The front-drive configuration severely compromised the ability to develop a high-performance Regal. The History of the Buick Grand National

Detroit-based General Motors' Buick Grand National is a sport version of the mid-size Buick Regal. The Grand National was produced from 1982 to 1987 in limited numbers. The Regal's lifespan stretched from 1973 to 2004. The 1984 and later Grand Nationals were immensely popular for its all-black paint scheme and made their debut at the height of the "Star Wars" film series and the Darth Vader look.

1. The Buick Regal was a personal luxury car developed as an answer to the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. The Regal was equipped with a luxury interior featuring cloth, vinyl or velor upholstery, bucket or bench seats and usually a 350-cubic-inch V-8.

   In 1982, Buick honored the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR, with its Buick Grand National, named for the Grand National stock car racing series founded in 1950 and continuing today. The Grand National car was equipped with either a 3.8- or 4.1-liter V-6 engine. The 4.6 version generated 175 horsepower and 205 foot-pounds of torque. A 175-horsepower turbocharged version was offered as an option, but only 215 Grand Nationals were produced and few were turbocharged.

   The Grand National accommodates four people, sits on a 108.1-inch wheel base and measures 200.7 inches long. It is 71.6 inches wide and stands 54.6 inches tall. By 1985, a turbocharged 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 was standard equipment.

   The Grand National was not offered for the 1983 model year, but returned in 1984 with a black paint scheme and the optional turbocharged V-6. In all, 5,204 Regal turbocharged versions were sold with 2,000 being Grand Nationals. Production of the Grand National rose slightly in 1985 with 2,101 units. And 5,512 were produced in 1986.

1. Days Dwindling

1. The Grand National's engine was modified slightly in 1986 to accommodate an intercooling system that enhanced the turbo V-6's performance to 245 horsepower. But by 1987, Buick was the last of General Motors' rear-drive cars. Plans were made for 1988 to switch all Buicks to front-drive. The front-drive configuration severely compromised the ability to develop a high-performance Regal. Buick management decided to end the Grand National after 1987.
