For sale is my 1981 Fiat Pininfarina Spider 124. This is a collector car by renowned Italian automobile designer, Sergio Pininfarina, who also designed many of the legendary Ferraris. The classic design still looks as fresh and sporty today as it did when it was introduced in 1966. It has a 2000 cc, Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection engine coupled to a 5-speed, manual transmission that provides plenty of power with the light weight. It is a real pleasure to drive and own. I purchased the car a few years ago from New Mexico, where the dry climate kept it completely rust-free. Unfortunately, the New Mexico sun also dried and cracked the upholstery and top, but a no or low-rust Spider is extremely hard to find. This car has been garaged since I have owned it, but we are moving. I am losing my garage space, so the wife says it’s got to go. It is a very solid and serviceable driver, that could easily be restored to collector quality. Please see photos and video for condition. THE GOOD: It starts great even on cold days – recent new battery. The engine sounds very nice, runs strong and the transmission shifts well. This car drives down the road well; is a blast to drive, and always brings comments from other motorists. Body is solid and in very good shape. The car is free of rust, except a few small surface specs and chips. The paint looks good from 10 feet, but needs a good buffing. Up close, the paint is not quite as good as the pictures look. I think it has been re-painted at some time, but I’m not sure. There are normal chips and scratches you would expect on a 30-year old car, and some fading, but still very sharp looking. A new top comes with it, but it is not installed. I will also include all my records and Fiat repair manual. All four tires are nearly new Fuzions, with less than 2,000 miles on them. Gets great gas mileage, between 25 – 30 mpg average. Has the chrome luggage rack. Non-smoker owned. Original wood, shift knob and gauges. THE BAD: Car starts and runs well, (see video) but it currently is quickly overheating, and leaking quite a bit of oil. My mechanic says it’s the Cam Tower Seal that’s leaking, and he hasn’t been able to check the overheating issue. He’s busy and can’t get to it for a few weeks, and I need to get it sold. Car had been overheating and a complete head job was recently done which fixed the overheating initially, but it has recently started to overheat again. If it weren’t for the overheating issue, I would drive it anywhere within reason. It could just be a thermostat, or something more major, I just don’t have time to explore it anymore. Small puff of blue smoke when first started after long intervals, but does not smoke after initial startup. Interior is complete, but cracked and split seats, console and dash. These parts are all available online at reasonable costs to restore. The convertible top is cracked and has a few holes, but a new top is included (uninstalled.) Front suspension squeaks during certain weather conditions, could probably use new bushings.
