Vehicle Detail
Well, here we go... I bought this 1965 Spitfire on eBay earlier this year with the idea that I would get the car running in Group 2 with C.V.A.R. here in Texas. I currently run a race prepared GT6 with C.V.A.R. and thought having another race car might be a good idea. Perhaps, one of my sons would go through driving school and get into vintage racing too. Alas, 3 Triumphs is 1 too many. So... with that I've decided to sell the Spitfire. This car has a ton of potential but WILL NEED SOME WORK! The car at present does run and drive, however, when I bought the car advertised as "RACE READY" , it was easy to see why that statement is almost always wishful thinking. A little history about the car. The car has an S.C.C.A. logbook dating back to 1973. It appears to have been raced in the N.W. USA by a man named D. Fontenot. Looks like it was raced from 1973-1976. There is a 20 year gap in the logbook when another Fontenot took up the car and raced in 1997-1998, some remarks were here in Texas with a Houston S.C.C.A. log. Another 10 year hiatus when the logbook shows up in California in the V.A.R.A. Club. July 2009-November 2009. I purchased the car in March 2010. I'm fairly mechanically inclined and do almost all my own work. The Spitfire was having some problems when the California owner and mechanic were trying to run a 15:1 head... A mild head was substituted and freshened up for the March sale on eBay. The car was delivered here from California and I had a test and tune day up at Eagles Canyon where I broke a couple of valve springs. The car has the later model 1972 1500 cc large journal engine with recessed rings around the pistons on the block. Short story long, there was no fuss box, I wasn't happy with the wiring, the seat was too far back, and I wanted to have a safe, reliable car to thrash around a bit. The following is what I've done so far, and again, this is a find that will need finishing up, but, again, there is a TON of potential to get into vintage racing for a very reasonable investment. My opening price is about a $3000.00 loss, and you should be able to add up the particulars and see. On the positive side! Roll cage from hell...SOMEBODY spent a ton of money on this incredible roll cage which passes through the firewall and even has relocated coil-over shocks on the front suspension. The shock towers are still there if you want to use the original setup. I moved the Kirkey 15 1/2 " seat up about 3 inches. There's a brand new RACEQUIP 6-point cam lock harness. I purchased 3 new Auto Meter 2 1/4' Gauges. I was going to build a new instrument cluster. I bought a new fuss buss from Painless Wiring. I bought a new Holley RED fuel pump. All the electronics have been rewired inside the trunk. There are stainless steel brake lines, stainless steel oil and fuel lines. Ignitor in the distributor. A 3 quart Accusump. Fuel Safe fuel cell. Aluminum race cross flow radiator. External oil filter, s.s. lines, and oil cooler stuck up under the front. Fire extinguisher system. Quick release steering wheel. Two extra heads. There are TWO hoods, one steel, one fiberglass. This paint job a THIRTY FOOTER... looks OK from 30 feet. Like baseball, lots of runs and errors... could probably be sanded and re-sprayed, I have enough paint for a whole other spray. The rear fenders have been extended outward with fiberglass panels. The wheel well was cut out a bit on the steel inside quarter panel and the fiberglass extensions are fabricated over the steel panels. All in all, a lot of car for the money. I can help with a reasonable delivery in the North Texas area, otherwise I will help with any logistics or loading needed for the buyer. Sold with a bill of sale only, there is no title as it has been a race car since 1973. Thanks for looking and Happy Trading!
