Vehicle Detail
History I acquired this car in 1990 in Illinois. It was brought back to Cleveland, Ohio, where most of the restoration work was done. The car was transported to Wisconsin in 1998. Restoration The restoration was started in 1992. The car was totally disassembled and completely sandblasted, phosphate passivated (Osphos), primed and painted. Everything on the car was totally dismantled. This was not a professional restoration – it is not a concours car. It was intended to be a fairly original, totally restored driver. Numbers Car AN5L 12196. 1275 Engine is 120D/DA/H 22944. It has a clear WI title. Body A new floor was welded in. Bracing was used during the floor replacement process to avoid closing of the door openings. The rocker panels were solid, as were all other parts of the body. Engine and Transmission The engine was initially a completely rebuilt 948. In early 2005 a completely rebuilt 1275 was installed. This engine was built by a well respected builder. It leaks a small amount of oil. The pistons are 0.030" over. All bearings are standard. The engine had a new oil pump and timing chain. The distributor is a new dual point Mallory, the coil is a new Mallory. The tranny is now a Datsun 210 5-speed. A new Borg and Beck clutch kit was installed. Carbs 1 1/4" HS2 SUs with AAC needles Fuel Pump A Facet electric fuel pump (FEP 42SV) and a Holley regulator provides fuel at 2.9 psi. Engine compartment Almost everything was completely rebuilt, including the generator, distributor, etc. The steering rack was not rebuilt. A heater has not been installed. The starter is now an Isuzu. Electrical The car is now negative electrical earth conversion. A battery cut –off switch has been installed next the steering rack and is operated from the driver’s seat. Cooling Cooling is currently provided by a yellow plastic six-blade plastic fan. A blanking sleeve is used in a stock radiator. When run with water, water wetter and water pump lubricant, it does not overheat. In winter antifreeze is used because the car is kept in an unheated garage. Hardware All nuts, bolts, washers, brackets, etc. were bead blasted then Parkerized. Parkerizing is a phosphate passivating treatment that was used to finish World War II hardware, for example, the 1911A1 .45-caliber sidearm. This was used on anything that was originally cadmium or nickel-plated, and on any metal that was originally unpainted. Suspension, gas tank and exhaust The springs were replaced - the spring boxes were in great shape. The front shocks were replaced with tube shocks. The exhaust pipe is not new. The brake components were replaced, or sandblasted, primed and painted and rebuilt with new parts. The gas tank was redone, including an interior preservative coating. The car is fitted with a heavy duty Winner’s Circle anti-sway bar. Brakes The front brakes were converted to discs. The master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder is new. The gas and brake lines were replaced. The brake fluid is NAPA DOT 5 silicone. Wheels and Tires The wheels are new Minator 5" X 13"; tires are new Firestone FR 380 - P175/70R13. Color The car was professionally painted a very white Chevrolet white. Interior New upholstery was installed, as well as carpeting and interior panels. The dash was recovered. A fire extinguisher is mounted behind the driver’s seat. The car is now sporting an Auto Power roll bar. Gauges/Controls The following are functioning: speedo, tach (using correct generator tach take-off), oil, radiator temperature, starter, headlights, choke, wiper, fuel. The switches are in place for the wiper squirter. An ignition disabling switch was installed behind the dash. Two switches were installed in the dashboard - one for the electric fuel pump and one for the electric fan (which is not currently being used). Top There is no top or tonneau cover. A used top frame in fair condition comes with the car. Most of the attaching hardware is installed. Trim The bumpers and grille were re-chromed. Other trim is new. The windshield frame and cockpit surround are original. Currently the front bumper is not installed. Use History The car was never raced, auto-crossed, or abused in any way. Very few miles were put on each summer. It is running very well right now.
