Vehicle Detail
For sale 1969 Triumph TR6 This car has never been invited to Pebble Beach. It’s never been restored. And it’s never been a garage queen. But it’s a wonderful car that in 20 years of ownership has never left me stranded or wanting more. The basics:• Reliable, strong running engine (starts easily)• ANSA exhaust – sounds like a symphony!• $3,000+ spent in last 5 years• New wool carpet, windshield• New radiator, alternator, coil, wires • New springs/shocks (Apple Hydraulics)• Original wire wheels on Michelin Redlines• Clutch issue (see below) The details:An early commission number TR6 (CC27839), this car features original engine, and its original transmission (rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago and shifts smoothly). It's been registered and insured for the past 20 year, runs strong and is very torquey. I did a compression test several years ago and compression was good and consistent (the #3 or 4 cylinder was a little lower that the rest). Pads and rotors have less than 2,000 miles on them. Shocks and springs were installed at the same time (Apple Hydraulic Lever Shocks). The body has been repainted (original Royal Blue) and holds a great shine, but has the chips you’d expect from car that gets driven (I have touch-up paint color matched by a local restoration shop). There is rust on the right-side rocker panel (both rockers were repaired by the previous owner). TR6s generally suffer from rusting/weakening frames directly in front of the rear sway arms -- it's a design flaw. When this happens, they sag and the doors are difficult to open. I had my car repaired by John Burkett before this became an issue. (google "john burkett triumph works ," the man is legandary). It was an expensive, extensive round of service, but the difference between a TR-6 with a weak frame and one that is rigid is night and day. It handles much better, the ride is more predictable and feels solid. He also tuned the carburetors at that time. The doors and bonnet need to be aligned. Chrome is decent, bumpers are straight. The frame has surface rust where John did not make repairs. The original Shadow Blue high-back seats are in very good shape and comfortable for all-day drives (see photos). There is a torn seam along the driver’s seat. I’ll include a new set of correct seat covers if the new owner would like them. I’ve installed new wool “Magic Carpet” from the Roadster Factory. Genuine, color correct wool and jute underlayment. The dash cover is in good, uncracked condition. Some crash pads do have cracks in the vinyl, driver’s door cap is missing. Wood dash is in great shape. I have a new windshield and seals. The original leather wrapped steering wheel has been recovered. The top needs to be replaced, as do pieces of weatherstripping. I have a new windshield, seal and trim which is included. All gauges, other than the speedo work. British cars get a bad rap when it comes to electricals, but if the car is used regularly, you shouldn’t have any problems. For the most part, the wiring is original, which means it is 40 years old. The car has a dealer installed AM/FM Clarion radio, the correct painted wire wheels and period correct Michelin Red Lines. I’d recommend replacing these before the next driving season due their age/wear. I have a roll bar for the car, which I removed when I redid the carpet. It’s included with the car if the new owner wants it. I have had less and less time to spend on the car the past few years and the car has sat since the spring this year. Unfortunately, the clutch plate has stuck to the flywheel. You can start the car in neutral -- no problem, or if you start the car in gear, it will fire up and drive. The new owner will have to have this taken care of before driving it, so trailering it home is recommended. Also, there is a leak between the water pump and its housing (when the radiator was replaced, the pump was removed, cleaned and inspected and I bet the gasket did not seat right). This car has been a joy to own and has given me 2 decades of top-down motoring adventure. I’ve driven it on 1000-mile trips and used it as a daily driver in good weather. And before getting married, it always got the attention of the young ladies! Look at the photos, the car is not perfect. But the work it needs for the most part is stuff most anyone can do with an instruction manual and some time. It’s simple enough mechanically to maintain and has been a lot of fun to do so – that’s one of the reasons I’ve kept it so long. The Triumph community is stronger than it’s ever been and help/advice is always available. If you have any questions at all, please call or email. 203-788-5828. NOTICE: The car is sold as is, so ask questions. If I didn't mention something that is very important to you, ask. There are no dumb questions. The car is being listed locally as well, but I will not end the auction early once there is a bid on it. I’ll be keeping the license plates seen in the photos. A $500 deposit is due within 3 business days of auction’s end (Paypal or cash), with the balance paid within 7 business days by wire transfer, U.S. Bank Cashier’s Check, cash or trade for a 1963 Ferrari California Spyder, preferably in blue. Thank you. On Aug-07-10 at 04:43:51 PDT, seller added the following information: I've added a photo of the frame repair (a bidder asked how noticeable the repair is). From the photo, you can see the repair around the floor area, but the repair to the frame itself is less noticeable. If you were to clean and recoat the entire frame, it would just about disappear. That's about the condition of the entire frame, spots of surface rust, but solid throughout (the exhaust has the normal corrosion you'd expect). If you plan to pay with a bank check, I'll need to wait for it to clear before releasing the car (please arrange this with me before hand, as I've been told this could take a week+). The non-refundable $500 deposit is still payable with Paypal if you'd like. Please check the feedback others have left for me from previous sales. I've never had a disappointed buyer, and you'll see that I often describe items worse than they are -- buyers are always pleasantly surprised. I know firsthand how hard it is to determine something's quality over the internet, so I go to great lengths to list the items flaws, whether they're noticeable or not. Questions? Now is the time to ask -- 203-788-5828. Thanks again for all the interest in the car to everyone who's emailed and called (even those TR6 guys who just wanted to talk about cars for a while!) Good luck to all.
