Vehicle Detail
BMW 2002TII, 1973 FJORD BLUE, a real survivor. all numbers matching highly collectible round tail tii all images on this listing were taken july 24th, 25th and 26th. it may sound cliche', but I would not hesitate to get in this car and drive it anywhere. car has been maintained by terry sayther (austin area pro bmw wrench specializes in the vintage cars) we have always approved any service recommended. and it wasn't cheap getting the car to this level of machanical security. read on.... the original owner was a military dentist stationed in germany. he ordered a US spec car and paid cash (I have a picture of the stack of bills he turned over to the dealer). first few years of service records are in german. the original owner later moved to Oregon where the car was maintained by 2002 restorations. I have all paperwork and receipts since purchased new including the original window sticker and bill of sale, provenance! we purchased this car nearly eight years ago from the second owner. he did not own it long. he was used to american muscle cars and when the water pump started to weep, he kept driving. it over heated and warped the head. we purchased the car non-running and had it towed to motorspeed west in santa clara, ca. they have an excellent reputation with these cars. this was probably the fourth tii I had taken to them, I highly recommend those guys. they tore down the engine, honed the cylinder bores, verified everything was within spec, installed all new bearings, gaskets and piston rings. I sourced a rebuilt head and the car was back on the road. when we moved, I drove this car from the san francisco bay area to austin texas where we took it to terry sayther. his first order of business was to get everything back to factory specs. he didn't want to try and tune the car with worn linkages etc. that was one expensive tune-up, all new MFI linkages. then, he told us he didn't think my head was working right, the one I sourced for the tii (not the one on my shoulders). so, Terry rebuilt a proper tii head and installed it. now the car had the original power I'd learned to love from a well sorted 2002tii. the car does not burn oil , no blue cloud of exhaust following it around and there is no black cloud on decelleration from worn valve guides/seals, as is common on many of these cars. terry rebuilt this head with the improved e30 teflon vavle seals, better than 1973 new! photo guy at work, a behind the scenes shot. this car drives without any shimmy or shake, super smooth and steady at highway speeds like the fine piece of german engineering that it is. brakes work perfectly, no strange vibrations or pulling to the side. this is where the magic happens, all numbers matching original tii engine has crane electronic ignition, upgraded spark plug wires and an optima battery. other than that stock tii engine and kugelfischer MFI (mechanical fuel injection) terry sayther did put this on the tail pipe sniffer and said the MFI was working fine, within specs. by nature, MFI does run a bit rich, especially when you put your right foot down. also note that this tii has the orignal tii nose piece with no snorkle hole. many tii have had front end body damage and have had their nose piece replaced with the regular 2002 metal that has a hole to the side of the radiator. original tii vin plate and fjord paint color, has never been any other color than fjord blue. all new a/c hoses. original spare, jack and tool. Previous Owner had the entire trunk covered in that charcoal carpet (even the wheel wells and sides, explaning the lack of nicks and gouges) but somehow the board on the right had it's original vinyl removed in that process. I just removed all that gray carpet this past week. rear seat has no tears and seat belts do work. headliner also free of gouges and tears. dash is cracked, the clock is not working and the odometer needs repair (never clear the tripometer while the car is moving) the air conditioning works, yes, A/C works! blows cold! we had motorspeed west fabricate a bracket to fit a modern japanese Sanden compressor. then we had terry sayther make all new custom a/c hoses and get it all working with modern refrigerant. blows cold, and does not drag the engine like the original behr unit. sunroof works. bmw sport steering wheel yes, the a/c really does work. you may not like the new sport seats, they sure do hold you in nice and tight. I do have one original seat that is not pretty but does work. shifter is crisp and precise, no worn bushing slop or hunting for gears. tiny chip in front windshield, repairable. window gaskets do not leak. the exhaust has been replaced in the not too distant past and I believe the original transmission was rebuilt prior to our ownership, I have a mountain of receipts. (passenger underside above and driver's side below) bilstein rear shocks you might want to replace the front seat belts. original german dealer's tag still attached (near driver's side tail light) tires have plenty of life left in them. 15 inch panasport wheels and current texas inspection and clear title. fwiw, I just had brand new blinker stalk installed along with hi/low beam stalk to get past this recent inspection. we have really loved this car, my wife has driven it daily for the last two years, and we've taken it out on a few BMW CCA drives, but the restoration has been expensive. I hope to be able to own one just like it some day. but it is time for it to move on. the video below was taken during winter, starting from cold after sitting in the garage for a couple of weeks, the two videos above were shot july 24th 2010 also shot back in early march, below video is going through the gears (all four of them) up to highway speed (not a drag race) On Jul-28-10 at 07:46:16 PDT, seller added the following information: I should note that we just sent this to terry sayther to get some minor items off the check list. that trip resulted in the following repairs. alternator brackets and bushings repaired, alt is now in good and straight/secure, no belt slip/squeal. I asked that they check the oil leak, they determined the oil pan and plug to be the source, just a matter of tightening the bolts, gasket is fairly new. I asked them to check both the transmission and differential fluids, both were topped off in anticipation of a new owner flying in and driving this home w/o any worries. I asked that they replace the heater control valve, they found nothing wrong with the heater control valve, determined the problem was with the cable. they manually turned the heater valve off and left it at that, as heat in texas is not in short supply. terry always includes notes for items he feels will need attention in the future. this recent invoice listed that the rubber motor mounts were cracking. he explained that they were not broken and he did not see a need to replace them at this time, but at some time in the future they will eventually need to be replaced. call me if you want to come see/drive the car or have it inspected by the mechanic of your choice, 512-587-7310 (paul) On Jul-29-10 at 06:02:40 PDT, seller added the following information: I would highly recommend that anybody seriously interested in this car that can't come see it in person to arrange a pre-purchase inspection by a third party independent professional mechanic or car inspector. at the very least, feel free to call terry sayther and inquire about it's history and notes there. and PLEASE do not bid or hit the BUY IT NOW button if you can't really afford to follow up with the purchase. as one person noted, yes, the rear bumper is slightly lower on the passenger's side. it was tapped in a parking incident and the tab is seems to be bent. the driver's side fender has also been repaired and there was minor rust removed in the spare tire well and a small spot (size of quarter) on the passenger's rocker. POR-15 was applied after all rust was scrubbed off w/ wire wheel and fjord paint for the finish.
