Vehicle Detail
1967 Camaro Convertible SOLID OKLAHOMA BODY 12 bolt rear end Clear Title This convertible IS SOLID - uncut original GM sheetmetal. I’ll let the pictures back me up. ORIGINAL METAL – NO REPO METAL This car is as close to a rust free but unrestored convertible as I have ever seen. From what I can tell the car has never been wrecked, repainted, or cut on. These pics show you some of what I did to it. There was no front clip, but the firewall area and sub frame show no evidence of ever having been hit. I installed two nice used GM front fenders but did not really align the clip it all that much since I figured that it would just be taken back off during the serious restoration this car deserves. OLD PRIMER WAS BEEN SANDED DOWN During the first part of the sanding process I used gray primer. Some areas did require a skim coat of filler due to dings and such. Using a DA with 80 grit I sanded down the old coat of primer shot over the original white paint. Having sanded on it, I found the exterior metal to be quite nice, but not perfect. I found no evidence of any sheet metal replacement. Here the car is now in black primer. Hazy look is due to lots of hand sanding with various grades of paper grit Door getting more sanding. CLOSE UPS OF CRITICAL AREAS Below is a series of close up shots of various areas which show just how solid this car is. Compare what you see here to what you would normally see! FRONT COWL AREA RH lower cowl area - still has original white paint on lower areas which commonly rust out. LH lower cowl area THE UNDERSIDES LH wheel well area and frame rail Front part LH wheel well area showing 2 drain plugs and solid back of rocker and lower front part of frame rail While wheelwell area is solid, there is some rust in the lip areas of the quarters LH shock tower area from under. Note that the car has survived much better than the shock itself (better made?) Inner shot of frame rail RH inner wheel well area and center part of frame rail Drain plugs also intact on RH side TRUNK AREA As with the floorpans, the trunk area is quite solid. The 4 small holes do not appear to be rust, but rather some made for various reasons by a previous owner Trunk area LH wheelwell area. Note how original spatter paint is still present. Other side also has its original spatter paint. Close up of rear of trunk area where rear frame rail ends - RH side. Note that many Camaros rust out in this area. Closeup of the LH side 12 BOLT REAR END The 12 bolt is probably original to the car since the dating on the rear end of October 24th is slightly before the production date – the second week of November. While 12 bolts are commonly associated with SS models, there is no traction bar. However, according to the Camaro Research Group web site report traction bars (radius rods) were not introduced until mid Dec 66. Thus, this car, being an 11B car (Nov 66) would not have had a radius rod on the RH side. Coding is as follows: PN 1024 G2. Breakdown is: PN is 307 12 bolt non posi. 10 is for month of October. 24 is date. G Detroit Gear & Axel plant. 2 second shift FLOORPANS For a convertible these floorpans are in great shape – especially so given that they are original. Underside of floorpan ROCKERS & DOOR JAMS Rockers are solid as you can ssee. Rear RH door jam,. Rust holes often occur in this spot where the sill plate ends and meets the bottom front of the quarter. Front RH door jam Rear LH door jam area is also quite solid. Front LH door jam THE BOWS As shown in other shots, car comes with the bows. This shot shows area that is normally welded together which has come apart and will need attention. ENGINE COMPARTMENT Car has no engine or transmission. TRIM TAG While the trim tag does not have a 4P, keep in mind that they did not adopt the use of the 4P designation until mid Dec, with the introduction of the traction bar. WHY A POSSIBLY SS ??? Being a LOS produced car with the 2M Trim Tag code and the 12 bolt, this car could possibly have been a TH400 equipped SS350 as that plant used the 2M for both powerglide 10 bolt non SS’s and TH400 SS350’s. There is no 4P code, which is commonly viewed as SS350 or L30/M20. However CRT documentation notes that the P refers to the radius rod, not the engine. Thus a model before mid Dec could have been an SS 350 and not have had a 4P. You will note that it now has a 4 sp pedal assembly. However that was changed due to the fact that, having no eng/trans, I had planned on running a manual tranny. IN SUMMARY If you want a perfect body, go to one of those $12000 up Repo bodies. And hope everything fits. And have no title, no front sub frame, no 12 bolt for that twelve grand. But, if you are looking to build a really outstanding Camaro convertible then I would think you would want one that requires very little cutting – if any. If you want uncut original GM metal then I think you will have to search long and far to find something more rust free than this. Unfortunately, my economic circumstances have not allowed me to complete the car, so it is now for sale. The primer has faded some but some light sanding and primer application should return it to what it looked like when it was worked on. Hare are some recent pics. Note that Bumper and tail lights have been added. BEING SOLD ‘AS IS’ Sold ‘AS IS’ with no warranty, either expressed, written, or implied.
