Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1949 Oldsmobile, Futuramic, Rocket 88, Club Sedan (sedanette, fastback). Original 303 cubic inch V8 engine and 4speed Hydramatic transmission. This car was built at the GM facility in South Gate, CA and has spent its entire life in California and Nevada. It is rust free. I replaced the front floor boards where the wet front mat caused rust on the top of the floor, which is very typical of these cars. The car has been completely re-wired using the original style cloth covered wire. The instrument cluster has been completely restored, re-chromed, and updated with NOS 1953 12volt gauges. The 53 gauges have been re-faced with 1949 graphics. Everything works, including the gas gauge and dome light. The instrument cluster was restored by Bill Goodnight (well known Oldsmobile restorer). By doing the instruments this way there is no need for resistors. The generator is a rebuilt 12 volt 1956 unit. Turn signals and a fuse panel have been added. The car is an original radio, heater, and clock delete model. The horn cap, clock delete plate, and radio delete plate are NOS. The instrument panel and window moldings have been refinished in the original colors. All window channels, rubber seals, and weatherstrips have been replaced. The glass is original and has the same nice patina as the rest of the car. All window regulators and door locks have been removed, cleaned, and lubricated. All key locks work properly. New door to body weatherstrips. The gas tank was removed, cleaned, and re-installed. The car was painted once many years ago to the current gray color, it was originally light green. The paint has been buffed and polished to its current finish. The paint is old and imperfect, but is presentable and has a nice patina. The moldings and exterior trim are quite good. The pot metal pieces have some pitting but less than normal for these cars. The rear bumper needs to be straightened and re-chromed. The interior is original and in poor condition. The Nevada and California sun that saved the body ruined the interior. The trunk has been painted with POR-15 and new cardboard panels installed. The trunk light works. New brake shoes, powder coated wheels, new radial tires P215/70Rx15 front - P235/70Rx15 rear. Restored 1950 Olds hub caps. The engine appears to be original, it runs well but has some lifter noise. The transmission works just as I remember, hard 1-2 shift, less severe after that. The transmission oil is clean and smells OK. This is a very nice old car that is fun to drive and is a big hit wherever it goes. The car is located in Aptos, CA near Santa Cruz. It is available to see by appointment. Sorry, no trades and no sales outside the continental US.
