Vehicle Detail

Hello and thanks for viewing my auction. By way of introduction, my name is Mike and I am a VW/Audi mechanic (34 years experience) and USAR officer. This is my personal 1982 VW Rabbit GTI pickup and I am selling it due to inactivity, finance of home improvements and stateside deployment with the U.S. Army. The “Story” In 1983, I owned one of the first Rabbit GTI sold in Chicago. As I was impressed with the “pocket-rocket” handling and speed of the car, I decided to build what VW did not – a Rabbit “GTI” pickup (known as “Caddy” in Europe). This 1982 Rabbit pickup began life as a silver exterior / blue interior diesel with a blown head gasket. It was in pretty good shape, not rusted out and was purchased for $400. I bought it in 1993 and stripped it down to a shell. It was repainted black and upon arrival to my shop, the transformation began. The goal was to add as many OEM GTI factory parts, OEM options, enhancements, a bit of chrome here and there and yet, keep the truck “factory stock” looking in appearance. I think you’ll agree I met that objective. Over $4,300 was spent in dealer parts alone. The “donor” GTI Rabbit was a 1984 and was abandoned on a side street next to the Dan Ryan expressway near my shop in Bridgeport. The plates were missing and also the speedometer, therefore the original miles on the engine is unknown, however it appeared that a female probably owned / drove it as the valve cover was fairly clean (not “over-heated” and paint flaking off), the engine was stock, not all greased up with oil leaks and the oil was clean. I completed the truck in 1994 and entered it in the Leslie Volkswagen “Volksfest” show (1994) and won the “Best in Class” trophy. I have raced this truck one time at the MOFOCO BUGFEST (1995) on a 1/8-mile drag strip – I beat the bug I raced, but lost due to exceeding my “dial in” time of 12.00. The truck ran 10.83 sec @ 64.11 mph. I submitted pictures and a write-up for an article in European Car, but sadly they just did a small write-up under the “Personals” (EC, Oct 1995, pg 25). According to a 2004 CARFAX, I am the second owner. The last mileage shown was 11 miles. I think the truck had around 100k miles when I bought it and the GTI speedometer I put in it had 5k miles displayed. The truck currently shows 65k miles on the same speedometer, so figure 160k miles on the body, unknown miles on the engine / trans and 60k miles and less on all the other mechanical parts I put on. The winning bidder will receive about 3” of files on this truck to include my build notes, instructions / owners manuals, tech notes, maintenance records, catalogs I purchased speed items from and receipts of items and parts purchased. I have over $18,000 invested in this truck. The reserve is less than a third of that amount. Disclosures As this truck is 28 years old, it is not “perfect”. During stereo rewiring and carpet cleaning, I rust neutralized the surface rust in the floors and discovered an area of rust through parallel to the driver outer seat rail. It was approximately ¾” x 9” long. I removed the rusted metal; rust neutralized the area, painted it and installed a patch using .040 aluminum and 48 aluminum rivets for strength. After the repair, I repainted the floors with oil-based black enamel paint. This was the only repair in the floor pan – no other rust through as the rest of the floor plan is solid. The shock towers and lower body channels are solid. There is a small area under the left side of the rear slider window that is rust blistered. It is between the bed metal and bed liner. Being reluctant to cut the bed liner to repair it, I have lived with it. Also, one little finger sized rust blister on the left side of the rear slider window and seal area – nothing serious. The paint has chips in it here and there and on the leading edge of the hood - I’ve touched those up. The driver seat has a small hole at the top in the fabric - I put a “patch” of like material under it. No other tears or holes in the seats. The driver side headrest fabric is a bit faded (the red stripes), but not bad as the interior is dark with the window tint. The rear, side panel vinyl is somewhat wrinkled – could use replacement. The replaced headliner is a velour blue fabric and is holding up nicely (no sags). Some of the chrome pieces (tailgate hinges and a/c mounting brackets) had its chrome to peel – can be re-chromed or painted over. The clear coat on the alloy wheels is somewhat faded even though the truck was garage kept. The window tint has some tears, scrapes and holes – could use replacement. I have and can take detailed pictures of any areas in question – just ask. I don’t want the auction winner to expect perfection and be disappointed or angry because of non-disclosure. Other than the above mentioned, this pickup is very nice. Fine Print and Legal Stuff I reserve the right to cancel this auction at any time as it is listed locally. Anyone with a feedback of zero or negative feedback will have their bid canceled unless I am contacted first. I require a $500.00 deposit via PayPal within 12 hours of the auction end and the balance paid via check, money order or wire transfer. The title is clear and in my possession and will not be released until the funds clear my bank. This pickup needs to be paid for and picked up NLT 18 July 2010 before I depart for active duty. This pickup is sold as is, where is with no implied and expressed warranties. If there are any mechanical issues with this truck at the time of pick-up, I will work with the buyer to our mutual satisfaction. Feel free to call me at 931-698-5980 or email at mv102858@yahoo.com for any questions. Thank you and good luck. You WILL be getting a very nice Rabbit “GTI” pickup. On Jul-12-10 at 23:49:19 PDT, seller added the following information: Due to the shortness of this 5 day auction and my departure to active duty, I have decided to "relax" a few of the restrictions I had in the original ad. * I will sell worldwide - payment will be in US dollars and buyer will be responsible for pickup and delivery of this truck. * The deposit required timeframe is increased from 12 to 72 hours. It is not refundable if a buyer "changes" his/her mind after sending it because of "buyer's remorse" - please be serious and sure you can follow thru on deposit and final payment. * Payment completion is extended from NLT 18 Jul 10 to seven (7) days after close of auction. * Pickup of the truck is extended from NLT 18 Jul 10 to fourteen (14) days after close of auction. I can store it longer in my shop, however, it needs to be tagged and insured in the new owner's name against loss, theft or fire. The license plate is currently expired and homeowner's insurance will not cover vehicles unless registered with up to date license plates. This requirement is to protect you and your pickup. * I will be including an inexpensive cloth truck cover, extra oil filters, fuses, fire extinguisher, H-4 bulbs (I believe I have two new ones, one for sure), extra fuel and vacuum hoses and any used parts and new consumables from my inventory that may be of use to the new owner. Also, I will include two nice blue velour seats that I used while the truck was my daily driver (I keep the GTI seats in storage for "shows" and special occasions) plus an external oil cooler kit (new, never installed) that I bought for the pickup. It really isn't needed as oil temps stay in the normal range, but will be included as a "freebie" anyways. My intent on the tight restrictions regarding deposit, payment and pickup was to be here face-to-face with the new owner and explain how the alarm, pager, fuel cut-off, etc worked. All this can be done via phone and the supplied owner manuals. Since two Brigade Combat Teams are arriving shortly after I mobilize at Camp Shelby, MS, I will not be able to break away to meet with the new owner unless it is a weekend and my "bosses" allow me to go on a quick pass. Thanks and hopes this helps potential bidders...
