This very nice R50 was taken to the “Riding Into History” show last month. There were approximately 400 motorcycles at the event. This beautifully restored vintage BMW won an “Award Of Merit” It has traveled less than 200 miles since a full total restoration and complete rebuild. Everything from the crankshaft to the tail light of this R50 has been rebuilt, machined, replaced, chromed, painted and polished to a high luster. All of the original factory chrome pieces were re-chromed, which is more expensive than replacing with reproduction non original parts. I am the second owner. This BMW only had 24,000 original miles. The bike had been setting in storage for many years. As you can see in the pictures the cylinders are in great condition, with no wear. This is a magnificent 44 year old collectable BMW. This is a beautiful machine that will always hold and increase in value. This is a numbers matching bike, the frame, the engine, the ID plate and the title are all the same. I have a clear / clean Florida title in my name and in my hand. I have personally owned this bike for about 10 years. I have had many good long rides with this bike. It has always been very reliable and dependable. Since this was such a nice numbers matching, low mileage bike. I decided to do a complete restoration. My plans were keeping the bike and parking it in the house. You can see this in the pictures. I have decided to sell this bike and hoping she will go to a good home. If you ever wanted a bike to showcase your collection or a fine vintage BMW to park in your house, this is the bike to bid on. Every time someone walks into my home, they are immediately drawn to this vintage BMW. This is a great conversation piece that will continue to appreciate in value. I recently visited the Barber Museum outside Birmingham; I was amazed at the quality of the restorations. This R50 that I am selling is equal to, or could be better than some of the bikes at this museum. This R50 is perfect and correct in every detail. Restorations Available I am available to restore your vintage /2 and make it look as pristine as the one in this ad. I have over 20 years experience as a master machinist and a strong desire to loving restore the motorcycles from BMW with perfection in detail. All restorations are completed in a timely manner and are billed for time and material. You can reach me at Pjinson194@aol.com or cell # (863) 286-7700. One of my other restorations, a Granada Red R69S, was featured in the BMW Owner News in June 2004. It is not for sale. The article was titled “I Found a Jewel”. Contact me at Pjinson194@aol.com for additional questions or information. ENGINE The engine was completely disassembled and inspected then the engine case was soaked in degreaser and pressure cleaned. All oil passage ports were inspected and cleaned twice to insure maximum oil flow. All oil passages were cleaned with high pressure. The entire engine case was then reassembled (to seal the engine case) then bead blasted at a low air pressure to protect the natural factory finish. The glass bead used was a fine grade AD. This procedure will just clean the aluminum and leave the natural patina. After the engine was cleaned with the glass bead, it was disassembled and pressure washed again to make sure the inside of the engine was perfectly clean. Cylinders were very lightly honed, brand new Kolbenschmidt 68MM rings were installed on the original factory pistons. The rings were installed in the cylinders first and the proper end gap on the rings was fitted properly. The crankshaft was sent to Ed Korn at Cycle Works, crankshaft was inspected, all bearing surfaces were checked by Ed and were in factory specs. New exhaust valves were installed. I had installed new intake vales about 2 years ago when I was riding the bike daily. A professional three angle valve job was machined in the valve seats to improve performance, compression flow and efficiency. Engine was carefully and meticulously assembled to all BMW Factory Manual specifications. Every nut and bolt was torqued to factory specifications. This entire engine was assembled with a tremendous amount of precision and care, to insure an extremely smooth running, reliable engine. All engine seals were replaced. Cylinders were powder coated a high gloss black by Competition Coating for maximum finish durability. The cylinders were powder coated before the machine work, to insure that the oven baking of the powder coating did not disturb the final machine fit of the pistons to the cylinders. The engine block was completely assembled and then the proper run out of the flywheel was checked with a dial indicator for the exact factory tolerances before it was installed in the frame, run out was .004”. New stainless steel pushrod tubes were installed. The entire engine was coated twice with WD40 to seal and protect the aluminum engine parts to hold the natural patina and luster. Original correct valve covers were installed, please notice that the aluminum fins are in excellent condition. Ignition Timing After the engine was assembled and before it was installed in the frame. I set the points and used a test light to set the initial timing. This procedure is great for starting the bike. After a few miles and during the breaking period, I used a timing light to bring the "S" mark directly in line with the timing mark on the engine case. All of these little tricks definitely helps with the starting a performance. I also use an Infrared laser thermometer on the exhaust pipes. This will also tell me the exact exhaust temperatures for both sides. I want to make sure both side are running perfectly and the same. This bike is starting so good; I have actually started the bike TWICE with just using my arm to push down the kick starter. This is what I would call a bike that is dialed in and tuned just about as good as they get! Heads Heads were sent to professional machine shop for inspection and the 3 seat angle was machined on the valve seats. This will improve the flow and efficiency of the engine. The inside of the heads were polished for more efficient air flow. The heads have the “short reach threads” threads are in excellent condition. New exhaust valves were installed. Electrical Brand new wiring main harness was installed, new wiring harness for headlight switch, new wiring harness for turn signals. New points, condenser, new plug wires, new spark plug caps and new spark plugs. I was able to find the correct metal wire ties in stainless steel. All stainless steel metal ties were used in the factory correct location. Generator was checked and charging the correct 7.2 volts. The commutator was polished in the lathe and new brushes were installed to maintain a reliable flow of current. I also installed a brand new improved coil. This new coil has the extra ground wire. The new coil helps create a very hot spark for easy starts. Intake Tubes Original carburetor intake tubes were re-chromed and hand polished to a high luster. Carburetors The correct numbers matching Bing carburetors were disassembled and soaked in a heated ultra sonic cleaner before replacing all needle valves, seats, springs, o-rings and floats. New “correct silver / gray” fuel lines with in line filters were installed, with inline fuel filters. New upgraded fuel shut off valve was installed - no leaking carburetors. Carburetors were set to the factory settings for the break in period. During and after the break in period the carburetors were set by the “old timer way” sound and RPM. After this was done, the carburetors were “fine tuned” and tweaked with a vacuum gauge. By using both methods, this will get the carburetors as perfect as you can. This will help in starting and the performance. Transmission Transmission was completely disassembled all new bearings, seals and gaskets were installed. A new 7MM clutch, clutch actuating rod and felt were installed. The speedometer only showed 24,000 miles when I purchased the bike. The transmission shifts perfectly and very smoothly. There was no wear on the shift forks and the bushings were in excellent condition. Speedometer The speedometer was sent to Palo Alto for a “complete rebuild” everything was disassembled and rebuilt or replaced, outer housing was blasted and zinc plated, calibration, servicing and a new bezel, face and glass were installed. The speedometer looks and works like new. This is more expensive than buying a new speedometer, but this is the original speedometer that was installed in the bike 44 years ago! The speedometer was reset to “0” at Palo Alto for the new owner Brakes Brakes were upgraded to new style brake shoe compound AF232. This simple replacement allows for vastly improved braking under all conditions but particularly when wet from the rain. The brake drums are smooth and true so there is no “pulsing” when using either brake. Front and rear brakes were adjusted after the break in period. Rear-end The rear end was cleaned and completely rebuilt with new bearings, gaskets and all new seals. The rear drive splines are in excellent condition and the new bearings insure that all tolerances are well within BMW factory specifications. There was virtually no wear on the ring and pinion gear. Splines All splines were coated lightly during assembly with the factory correct high pressure spline lubricant, Texaco Starplex Moly 2 Keys Matching keys for the gas tank and the fork lock, when is the last time you saw a bike that both keys matched and worked properly? Paint Every part was sand blasted to bare metal. The parts were taken to the paint shop the same day, each part was primed and wet sanded twice. The correct original factory color Dover white paint was used. Every part was buffed and polished to a high luster. The tank and fenders were correctly hand striped by the artist who has been painting motorcycles for approximately 35 years. Take a close look at the stripping; it is correct in every way, proper width of the stripes and proper spacing between the stripes. The tank and fenders were initialed by the artist in the proper location. Every piece of the bike was waxed and polished twice before assembly. The inside of the gas tank is free of rust and has the original red coating on the inside. The original correct BMW tank emblems have the polished stainless steel trim rings that accent the emblems and are a real eye catcher. Tires & Rims The original aluminum rims were polished to a high luster, the original rims are better than the after market replacement rims. I saw a set of these original aluminum rims for sale a while back for $1,000.00. The rims were laced and trued to .005” with new stainless steel spokes. New wheel bearings and seals were also installed and checked for proper interference fit. Run out and deviation of the wheels was checked before the tires were mounted. As you can see in the pictures, they are new Dunlop D404 tires. Along with the original rims and tires are new tubes and rubber rim straps. I have restored many of these vintage bikes and the Dunlop tires perform very well on these vintage bikes. In addition the bike has polished stainless steel axels for the front and rear wheels. New silver hub caps were added to accent the wheel assemblies. Extra care and attention with the wheel assemblies provides great dividends with a smoother ride and better handling machine. The steering head bearings were also upgraded with new tapered roller bearings for more precise steering control. Shocks Front a rear shocks were completely disassembled, checked and inspected. Shocks are is excellent condition. The upper and lower grommets were worn; both upper and lower grommets were replaced with all new parts. Stainless Steel EPCO Headers & Mufflers New EPCO stainless steel mufflers and headers were recently installed on the bike I used an old set of headers for the break in period, tune up and carburetor adjustments. The new stainless headers have 0 miles on them. In case you are wondering the costs of the headers and mufflers are $1,000.00 Other Stainless Steel Upgrades Stainless steel hose clamps were used on the drive shaft rubber boot. The wiring harness was secured with all new stainless steel metal straps. Stainless steel bolts heads have been lightly glass beaded to give the “original cad look” with the benefits of stainless. Stainless steel wire ties for the main wiring harness, nice upgrade, never rusts. Shipping I will consider delivery of this classic motorcycle to your door. Call me and we can discuss the terms. Note* I own and drive these 1955 to 1969 BMW motorcycles every day. Owning and driving these bikes helps you understand how these bikes operate. There are numerous benefits with driving the magnificent machines. It helps you set up the bike properly; you can also do a few things that help the bikes performance and handling. The last bike I restored scored a 98 out a 100. There were two washers I added because the new owner wanted to change the bench seat to a solo. The added washers were to protect the paint. So when the washers were removed, it was a 100 point bike. I’m sure there are numerous items that I have left out. I have documented the entire restoration with dated pictures and receipts for everything that was done. Additional Information All aluminum pieces including the kick starter, shifter, clutch & brake levers were hand polished to a high luster. This classic BMW also includes a polished stainless steel bolt kit for greater durability and eye appeal. The tire air pump is brand new and it does work. A new Denfeld solo seat was installed for better comfort and styling. Heads were re-torqued, valves were set and all fluids were flushed and changed at 25, 100, and 200 miles during the break-in period. During the breaking period, I actually carried around a small piece of carpet to park the bike on. This kept any scratches off of the bottom of the center stand. I know this is probably a little “overboard” but this is a Concours restoration and no expense in time or money was spared. Valves and timing have been checked and reset at the same intervals. Just about everything that could be replaced or rebuilt has been done with this exceptional, mechanically perfect show piece. All brake, clutch and throttle cables were replaced with the new improved Teflon lined cables. My intentions when restoring this BMW were to use it as a show bike that could also be ridden to shows and rallies and weekend cruising with my buddies. The R50 is considered to be one of the best all-around bikes BMW built back then. It is very smooth and comfortable to ride. I own a R50, R60 and a R69S. The R50 is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and enjoyable bike to ride. This bike always draws a crowd and is a pleasure to ride. The BMW Motorcycle factory warranty has recently expired, so the bike will be sold as is. This bike has been kept in a climate controlled room since the restoration was completed. I do have more pictures I can send you additional pictures if needed. This BMW will only appreciate in value as the years go by. Take some money out of that retirement fund and put it to good use with an appreciating investment. This is a rare opportunity for you to own a BMW as nice as this. Be the envy of all your friends at the next motorcycle event. Bid to win! I have 100% positive feedback, bid with confidence. This beautiful Dover white BMW will be a great addition to your collection, or even better to use as a show piece in your home. Thank you for looking at this bike and GOOD LUCK!! Added BONUS The winning bidder will receive a customized book designed for this 1966 R50. The book is a little added touch of class for this beautiful restored vintage BMW motorcycle. I took over 100 pictures of EVERY detail for the entire restoration process. This proves and documents that everything was restored properly and correctly. All of these high resolution photos are in this book. This will document the restoration and add to the value of your bike. Payment – Naturally cash is always nice. I would prefer a wire transfer. This keeps everything legal and safe. Bank officials do wire transfers, hard to scam people by doing business this way. If you want to use Paypal, please keep in mind that you will need to add 3% to the total price of the bike. PS, all Nigerian scammers and any other trash don’t waste my time or yours. If you want to bid, go ahead. If you are the lucky winner, you will send me $1,000,000.00 in good old US currency. I will keep and try and spend every dime on beautiful young women. This will take about 1 year, or less, after the money and the women are gone, I might consider sending you the BMW, but probably not. I will be too tired to bother with you.
