Vehicle Detail
At auction is an original, 1951 Henry J Deluxe Six. I bought the car from the original owner, Mike (Del) Scotto, who bought the car new and stated that he had it special ordered in the color Ceramic Green, as indicated by the chassis tag code 355 (see pictures of car and chassis tag). A Henry J "Deluxe" means you get the six cylinder, flat head Willys engine, overdrive with the transmission, a heater, and some extra stainless steel trim on the external windshield surround. This car has all of these features. According to my conversation with Mike Scotto prior to his death, the car was originally purchased in California, where Mike apparently lived in the Sacramento area. Mike died in about 2006, and I bought it from people involved with the settlement of his estate. This car is an amazing time capsule. I am a serious hobby car collector, and to find an original Henry J in this sort of condition is unusual. I bought the car as a Number 3 driver, using Old Cars Price Guide as a guideline for my payment for the car. I now have the car priced to sell. I simply want to get out of the car most of my initial investment. The only work I have done on the car is to change the oil and do lubrication, and I put an NOS dual stage fuel pump on the car, as the original fuel pump was getting tired. I also had the starter rebuilt. The car has a new battery, six volt, positive ground, all electrics correct as original to my knowledge. If you are aware of the history of Henry J. Kaiser in Hawaii, it is really interesting. Mr. Kaiser built the planned community of Hawaii Kai on Oahu, and the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel was originally named The Kaiser Hawaiian Village. Many other aspects of life in Hawaii, especially on Oahu, were heavily influenced by the actions of Henry J. Kaiser. To own one of his originally designed automobiles is to own a part of Hawaii's modern history. Also, please check with the Kaiser-Frazer Owners Club and other Henry J experts, as this car is fairly well known among Henry J circles. This car starts up the first attempt for me, and drives out great. All of the gauges and other features work except for the speedometer. The title indicates the car has 6304 miles, but also bears the notation "Mileage Exceeds The Mechanical Limits" which is standard procedure for the Hawaii DMV for older cars that have over 100,000 miles. The car has a current safety check done by the State of Hawaii, so all safety features currently work in such as lights, windshield wipers, brakes, emergency brake, and other items tested by the State of Hawaii for a car to be licensed and registered to drive on Hawaii roads--and this car has current license and registration. Also working are the gas gauge, temperature gauge, amp light, and engine oil light. Even the heater works! The original owner used "Motorhead" brand oil which contains zinc, and I have continued that tradition, so the car comes with a gallon of this special oil for your next oil change. It has not used any oil during my ownership. I would categorize this car as a dependable driver, and you do get a lot of attention driving down the road in this vehicle that looks like something out of "The Jetsons" with its Ceramic Green paint job and classy, Henry J looks with the wide white wall tires, which are older tires. Hubcap on spare too! I have about 20 cars in my collection, and I've bought many of my cars sight unseen, by simply looking at pictures, knowing the marque, and getting to know the buyer. Disclosure is a very important part of a classic car sale, and I have attempted to fully disclose all of the issues that I know about regarding the Henry J. Additional, full disclosure on this car is that there is some minor rust in the rocker panel area. I have removed the drivers side bottom door rubber, which normally covers the top of the rocker panel, so you can see this minor rust. I do not believe the rocker panels, or the pan on this car need replacing at this time, nor do I believe any of the rust issues with this car are of a structural concern. It is mostly cosmetic rust, and confined to those spots on the car where you would expect rust to first develop. Other disclosure items include the fact that about the last thing Mike did while he was well enough to drive the car was to back it out of his garage without opening the garage door! That explains the absence of the bumper over riders on the rear bumper, and I do not have them. So, please be aware that I'm selling this car as a very good and unusual Henry J Deluxe Six survivor, but not a perfect car in a cosmetic sense. It was Mike's pride and joy, and I'm simply passing on this treasure to someone else who will appreciate an unusual car with limited ownership, and a car that I believe is a good and dependable driver, not a show car and not a perfect car. The car has current, vanity Hawaii license plates "HNRY J" that go with the sale, and a host of manuals and literature, including a Henry J Shop Manual, a 1951 Henry J Parts List catalog that appears original, an old reprint from Mechanix Illustrated entitled "Mechanix Illustrated Tests the New Henry J", and a variety of other parts catalogs and items from the Kaiser Frazer Owners Club. Again, this car has current Hawaii license plates, current registration, and a current Safety Check performed by the State of Hawaii Safety Check Station. Please contact me through the eBay "Ask Seller A Question" feature in advance of bidding, regarding any matter relative to this car, or any other question you may have about the car. I will pay for the shipping of the car from the Port of Hilo to San Diego or Covina, California, if the car ships on Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines (www.pashahawaii.com). If you choose not to have me cover the cost of shipping as described above, I will credit $900 to you against the final sale price of the car. This car is being sold "as is, where is" and I encourage inspection of the vehicle prior to bidding. I'm very pleased with this car and have a very reasonable price as my Reserve, but you are responsible for carrying out your due diligence prior to bidding/purchasing this vehicle. There are no warranties on this car, expressed or implied. Please take a moment to carefully examine all of the pictures. I have taken pictures that show the stunning "time capsule" and "survivor" quality of the car, as well as pictures that are meant to disclose the minor defects that I am aware of with the vehicle. I have a car lift, and took pictures of the car up on the lift, so you can examine the undercarriage. I did not attempt to clean up the undercarriage at all, so you can see exactly the condition of the frame and floor pan, and other components such as undersides of rocker panels and all bracing. You will also see some normal road dirt on the undercarriage, consistent with the car being a driver. Similarly, with the painted and chrome areas of the car, and the interior, I carried out normal cleaning, but nothing was done to this car in any picture to attempt to hide any flaws in the car--in fact, many pictures were taken deliberately to disclose any minor issues with the car that some people may consider flaws. Also, please note this is a five day auction. Read payment instructions carefully, as the car will not leave my garage until full payment is received. Thank you very much for reading this description, and good luck! Try to contact me early with any of your questions. Aloha!
